On Tuesday, I adopted a pair of turkish angora kittens from a shelter. They are brother and sister and will turn 3 months next week. I noticed on Wednesday that the female kitten was coughing and sneezing (one of my other cats had previously had an URI). Thursday, I took her to a new vet clinic I have decided to try. The vet prescribed Clavamox drops 15 ml to be given every 12 hours @ half a dropper’s worth. The other item I was given was the transfer stress relief pack powder to put in their food to hopefully build up the immunity of my other cats from the URI.

Fast forward, I noticed the kitten had looser stools on Thursday, but figured it was because of the change in diet (she now has access to dry food 24/7 and wet food (friskies/fancy feast) during feeding time. However, on Friday she had full-blown diarrhea to the point that it just comes out of her butt. Initially I tried to blot her butt to get rid of the poop, but it seemed to irritate her already raw behind, so now I’ve started rinsing her gently in water to get rid of the poop that goes all over her behind. I saw her urinate in the box yesterday, but today she peed in one of the boxes that the cats usually lay in.

I called the vet and they didn’t seem concerned at all (apparently this is a common side effect of clavamox?) because she is still eating and suggested if things don’t change, then to bring her in for a stool sample. It’s become a mess, I feel horrible for the little kitten. She’s being more active and very loving today, moreso than yesterday. I also notice she’s been cleaning herself. I don’t know what to do, I’m so angry because my little girl wasn’t in bad shape before going to the vet, just some sneezes and some coughing. Now I’m worried I might lose her. Has anyone ever had this happen before? I’m going to take her back in on Monday if nothing has changed. Any home remedy ideas until then? If you’ve had a similar experience with this medicine, please share!

*Note that the vet advised to stop giving Clavamox when I called on Friday and the kitten hasn’t had any clavamox for 36 hours at least

****PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS AS A DISCUSSION FOR ME TO START FEEDING MY ANIMALS A “RAW” DIET, I AM INTERESTED IN WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO MY KITTEN IN RESPONSE TO CLAVAMOX**** THANK YOU

Hi Angelia, no need to shout, this is a very fluffy place and no one is going to tell you *how* to do anything. Some of us have hand reared kittens and like to share our successes with others who are doing the same. I think it’s a good idea to stop the Clavamox, as it IS a side affect of this antibiotic. I would recommend L-lysine, it’s an over the counter amino acid (human grade) that can be ground into powder and sprinkled on your kittens/cats food. I use it on mine as they all have the feline herpes virus, (don’t worry, this is not a death sentence by any means) and it helps to bring sneezing, runny eyes under control. It gives their immune system a boost, which at this point, sounds like your kitten could use it. I don’t know what’s in the powder you are giving your kitten, but I would stop that too for the time being. Get some goat’s milk also, as it has probiotics for her gut, and won’t give her added diarrhea or constipate her. It doesn’t contain lactose, like cow’s milk which is not good for cats/kittens. It helps to settle my kittens/cats tummies when things get out of control. You can find it in the cold milk section of the grocery, or the baking aisle in cans (condensed so add water 1 to 1). I actually like the canned as I can store it in the cupboard and pull it out when I need it for my cats. I mix a can at a time and keep it in the frig and give it to them as I feel they need it. I think it will take a few days for the Clavamox to clear her system, but when it does, she will probably feel better and the L-lysine and goat’s milk will help her during and even after her bout with the diarrhea. My cats are grown and I still whip out the goat’s milk, it’s like a miracle worker for me. Hope this helps! Keep us posted..

Thank you, I only “shouted” because before I joined this site a few hours ago, I read some posts that came up on my search where people were arguing about the raw food diet and I just didn’t care to read any of that here, as I wanted to try to find the most immediate help for her. I stopped the clavamox early yesterday morning and stopped the powder today, she is still having the runs and sometimes just her moving around causes them to come out. I’m definitely going to try the l-lysine and goat’s milk if I can find it. Thank you for your help!

You’re welcome Angelia. We try and avoid controversial topics here as nothing will ever be resolved on issues that divide us. Everyone has their valid points and we don’t discuss them here. Plenty of other sites that are hotbeds for those topics, but we are the “fluffiest place on the internet” and the best place to ask questions about your kitties and get solid, well meaning advice. We aren’t vets, but have cats and experience with various issues and try to help those that ask for help. I hope your kitten gets to feeling better in the next few days. I imagine if the vet wants a stool sample, it may be to check for parasites such as the one-celled variety like coccidia or giardia. They are notorious for causing diarrhea too, but the Clavamox does with some kittens also. Come back and let us know how she (and you) are doing!

Just an update: Went out late last night and purchased crush pumpkin, kitten milk replacment, non-irritating kitty wipes, puppy pads, and some vaseline. Gave her some KMR and crushed pumpkin last night, and she was waiting for me to get up this morning and wasn’t covered in poop. Then she ate a little dry and a decent amount of wet food and drank some water. 🙂 Will keep updated.
