Our 8 month old we got 3 weeks ago from a local charity has been having poop issues for few days now . She started on normal then went slimy then went liquid. We took her to the vet and where given amoxicillin for her and special cat food . The first 24 hours of it where fine but we fixed it with rice to give her something to bulk her up and liquid has returned ( there was 2 slightly) better stools before it . How long should the amoxicillin take to work ( this will be day 3 of 5 starting today ) and should the rice be removed .

    Hi Jonathan,
I don’t know why your kitten was given amoxicillin, but sometimes antibiotics cause diarrhea in kittens and cats. It could be she has parasites, the one celled type that cause diarrhea, but an antibiotic won’t fix that. She will have to be tested for them and another treatment prescribed. You need to call the vet and report what’s happening. Just make sure she doesn’t get dehydrated. I don’t know that the rice will hurt anything at all. The issue is the diarrhea and becoming dehydrated. Keep us posted on how she’s doing please!

Hi Jonathan – welcome to TDK!
See how day 3 goes, amoxicillin may take a few days to kick in.
You could reduce the amount of rice and see if that helps, but it’s probably the meds.
Oh and make sure she stays hydrated.
Good luck – keep in touch! And call your vet if you don’t see any improvement in a day or two.

Quick update she had more loose stolls but after being given just her hills prescription food with no rice at all in it she seems to have perked up and is going mad with new toys . so seems to be an improvement . After having a look at meds it is synulox she has been given

Ok new problem has started she has started having small amount of loose watery stool running from her back end . She is cleaning herself but I have had to wipe a few times to help . Is it ok to wipe and good this be caused by her eating the rice yesterday .

It’s ok to clean her up. You could try giving some plain pumpkin but make sure it doesn’t have any spices. Pumpkin is fiber and may help.

    Good luck,

Thanks for advice cant get plain pumpkin round these parts although she has hand a few accidents but the are not as watery and she is now going into litter tray for a few of them . Some said the food might be working to well and causing constipation any ideas if that could cause little small accidents without and proper bathroom use

    Jonathan,

Here’s what I found out about synulox: It can cause tummy pain, diarrhea and decreased appetite. She should be giving her meds. after eating a bit. These side effects may persist while your cat is taking the medicine.

As with hoomins, antibiotics upset the good/bad bacteria balance. Try giving your girl some plain yogurt. The yogurt helps bring the balance to her system.

Remember, if you have any concerns, call the vet again. Also, as Kittyzee said, she should be tested for parasites.

    Good Luck

I’m glad she’s feeling better. It would be good to give some yogurt as it won’t hurt her. Actually, both of your cats can have some yogurt 3 x week to keep their tummies healthy.

Give your kits hugs from me

yeah she was on it to start but then had the rice issues but the i/d food and the pro biotics should help big time

Quick update . Things are hopefully on the up she is taking a small amount of dry food mixed in with her food and has been given some pro biotic tablets . She had a gooey stoll this morning and this evening had another gooey one with a small solid bit in it . So guessing this is a good sign . Now thinking of trying to find a supermarket brand food that is bland like felix and starting to get her introduced to it .

Jonathan, just be careful with all the different foods, that can tend to cause stomach upset and diarrhea too. I’m not trying to scare you, just inform you. Thanks for keeping us posted!

Yeah turns out in last 4 weeks she has been on 4 types of wet food and 2 types of biscuits but finally got hold of last owners and know she was on felix with felix buscuits so going back to it over a week or 2 starting with a tea spoon full in wet food to see how that goes and she has been taking about 10 buscuits in her food each time . Always a good sign to see a small solid bit of poop in her stool aswell although thinking vet is milking it now and is money grabbing . Have spoke to 50+ year cat owner instead of vet now

Hi Jonathan – glad to hear of some improvement 🙂
If you haven’t done so yet, why don’t you submit pics of her to The Daily Kitten? It would be great to meet your kitten.
Good luck – here’s hoping the upward trend continues.

I will do once she sits long enough to get a pic lol . as for her gut she seems to be getting better now there is a mix between fully normal and a bit of loose and mostly loose with a bit of solid mixed in now but she is now on hills i/d biscuits with hills i/d food so trying her on this for a few days ( this is day 2 of it ) and no pure water yet although still flatulat so not sure if this is a step in the right deirection with there being a few times of normal and then the odd loose stoll as well . Any heads up to this would be welcome
