HELP!!! I got a 2 week old kitten about a day and a half ago. She is not from a stray litter the mothers owner was giving the kittens away like tic tacs. She took them away from the mom as soon as they were born. She stated that she didnt want the mother to get attached. I wasn’t going to take one when I heard her say that if someone doesn’t take the last one she would probably just leave her some where…… So I gave in and took her. She told me she was feeding them 2% milk. I have had her for about a day and a half I have her on PetAg milk replacer. she is fighting me for everything. For feeding her I have to kind of scruff her to get her to stay still long enough to get the nipple in her mouth and then I only get a few drops in. She has a little round belly and hasn’t pooped I stimulate her she pees but no poop. Did the whole warm bath thing she howled like I was trying to rip her tail off. I saw some one talk about pumpkin puree on another post but didnt go in on how to administer it. I work with dogs I am a trainer I have never owned a cat I have never hand raised a kitten before I am so afraid she is going to die because of something I did wrong. She is fighting me to eat to sleep to poop can someone please please help me.

for my baby kitten i had to wet a piece of tissue and rub on and around the anus to stimulate the poop out. not to hard to bruise but enough to feel like their mommy licking. i am no expert but that helped with mines.

Hi Genna, there used to be a video on Utube on caring for younf kittens, it seems to have been taken down. But, if you click on the tags “messybeast’ or ‘orphan’ on the right side of the page, you will get a list of previous posts on this subject, and there should be some posts where people have explained some of the information you need. Estacey is right re: stimulating so kitten can poop, and you’re on the right track with the milk replacement instead of cows milk. Also, I’m a huge fan of calling in expert advice, I would say hook up with a local vet and see what help they can provide as well.
God bless you for taking this baby. I can’t even comment on someone taking newborns away from their mother like that, my thoughts would be unprintable. If you can reach out to your kitten’s siblings’ new parents, you might be able to trade info and support as well, they might be as worried and lost as you are. Good luck and please let us know how things go!

Oh, NO, I can’t believe those youtube videos have been taken down, they were great and must have saved many kitten lives. Genna, this thread has links to many other good kitten sites with advice: http://dailykitten.com/chat/topic/links-for-kitten-raising-sites-eg-messybeast/
And you will find heaps of good advice if you click on the pink tags ‘messybeast’ and especially ‘orphans’. Read everything you can, and browse youtube as well, I cannot believe all the kitten care videos have suddenly disappeared.

Okay, on to practicalities. Yes, kitten milk replacement is the best for her. At two days old, and with an empty tum, having been snatched from her mum, I wouldn’t expect poop yet. You don’t get much poop while on milk, she needs almost all of that milk to grow on, so stop worrying about that for now. (At two days old, I’d definitely stay away from pumpkin.) I don’t think it’s constipation, she doesn’t have anything much in her to poop! Kittens tend not to like the bottle, you may have to experiment with making a bigger hole for her, or with using a big syringe (with the needle out, obviously), or even a teaspoon. At this stage, crashing from low blood sugar is always a possibility so if she suddenly seems to dive downhill, force a little milk into her, or stroke sugar water on her tongue and the roof of her mouth or smear a little honey or (better) clear Karo corn syrup on her mouth and gums. Feed her with her ‘four (feet) on the floor’, NOT on her back, that could cause her to aspirate milk. Read everything we’ve suggested and then get back to us with any more specific questions, we are not vets but we’ll try our very best to help.

You have taken on a lot with raising a wee one like this, that mother cat’s ‘owner’ — well, my opinion, like Prairiecat’s, is unprintable. But it is a very sad fact that unweaned kittens do not do well without their mums, and mortality rates are very high so if this little one doesn’t make it, please do not blame yourself, you have given her the best possible chance for a happy and healthy life and, more importantly, you have given her love.

I won’t reiterate the opinions already stated re the “owner” who basically disposed of the kittens like so much trash. I’m not in any way dissing online advice, and cannot add to it, but is it possible for you to bring kitty to a vet and get her fully checked out along with some advice based on her current health/growth status?. This way she will be assessed “hands-on”. And yes, please let us know how she’s doing.

Ohhh, sorry, two weeks old. Okay, well, kittens don’t have to poop every day, especially if they’re still on milk, so I still wouldn’t worry too much, and you might not recognise the poop as poop if you see it, it might resemble brown, smellier pee. Just keep stimulating her before and after every meal and if it gets to be three days without poop, you can try adding a few drops of a vegetable oil (eg olive, soya, rice bran) or mineral oil to her milk. You can also try diluting her KMR a bit more with water. Powdered KMR does seem to constipate kittens, you can sieve it before you give it to her, or you can switch to canned liquid KMR or you can try canned goats’ milk (from the Baking section at Walmart or similar) — goats milk is good for them and they are able to digest it. If she still won’t take the milk, you could always try her on ‘glop’, which is emergency kitten formula made mostly from either condensed or evaporated milk. Click on ‘kitten glop’ for loads of recipes and click on ‘constipation’ for more help with this very very common problem with kittens.

If you want to try pumpkin, it has to be absolutely plain cooked pumpkin, so either boil it yourself or use plain canned pumpkin — NOT pie filling, no spices or anything added, and just give her a very little.
Best of luck and let us know how it’s going.

Okay so I spent the better part of the morning tracking down the other people who got kittens I got in contact with 4 of the six kitten owners and the daughter of the owner of the mother cat. she spoke english so I got the whole story from her or so I think so the woman didnt take the kittens away from the mom right away she left them with her till they started moving around then she started bottle feeding them so I’m guessing 7-10 days of moms milk then the 2% crap she was born on the 30th of dec so that makes her 16 days old it seems she did get her colostrum I really really hope she did the other kittens are much bigger then her and are eatting well two went to some friends of mine so were conparing notes her brother is almost double her size so im guessing either hes the biggest or shes the littlest of the litter. I spoke with the daughter about the charges that could be brought up on the mom but I told her if she allows me to bring the mom in to get spayed I wont go to the cops and she agreed I made the appointment for next monday I hope she goes threw with it they seem to love the mom alot and I am going to chalk this up to the owner not being educated.

Genna, LOL at happy poop! You have gone above and beyond, not only reaching out to the other kitten owners but also to the mother cat’s owner and giving her a chance to 1.) learn why what she did was so harmful and 2.) getting mom-cat spayed so mistake will not be repeated. MUCH better solution than my unfluffy fantasy of stringing her up by her thumbs.
Does your baby have a name yet? It sound like, once she’s cleared for worms, etc. your dog is ready to step up and be a surrogate mom!

HI Genna. I was so saddened and horrified to read about this woman. Educated or not, that’s sick behavior. If you can get that cat away from her somehow it would be such a blessing. What a great person you are to step up and help this little life.

Anyway, I had my adventure starting in June when I started bottle feeding two day old kittens. I still see lots of videos about bottle feeding on you tube, and the links that people gave me here were very helpful. The shelter also helped me also by giving me the KMR (they booked the kittens as though I was fostering them) and I ended up ordering the pet nursers in bulk from amazon. I went through a lot of nipples in those first three months.

It was also kind of shocking to me how much bad advice there is out there. “Oh they usually die, so it’s not your fault.” Well my conclusion was it often is people’s fault because they kinda sorta try to do the right thing. There are no visual cues that you’re doing the wrong things, so yeah, it may not seem to matter that you don’t get up in the middle of the night to feed them, but it does mean you’re slowing starving them to death. And no, you can’t save the formula if the kitten doesn’t drink it, it’ll grow enormous amounts of bacteria after it was heated. Not that any of this is directed at you; I guess I’m just having flash backs to how hard it really was and people’s tendency to downplay that.

But anyway, they all survived and they are a joy!!! If you go back and read my posts like you I was having fits over the pooping issue. I got so much good advice here and such bad/nonspecific advice from vets. Not that any of this is news to the very experience people here, but my advice would be to get a handle on sterilizing bottles, dangers of aspiration, getting the forumula to the right temp (I stuck the bottle in a cup of hot water to heat it and then used a CVS therm. to test), stimulating them to poop/pee (there’s a great video on the triangle method out there.) I kept a chart about how much they ate and who pooped. I also kept a bottle of pedialyte in the fridge at all times if I thought they weren’t eating enough.

You’re probably way ahead on all of the above, but thought I’d mention it. Also vet at emergency clinic told me not to use mineral oil when they are that young, stick to pumpkin a laxative from the vet. I finally had to use the latter, but was really glad I had it on hand when they needed it. OH and IMO don’t ever go back and forth between the canned KMR and the powder – their systems can’t handle it.

Anyway good luck and wish you all the best. 🙂

I wasn’t going to take one when I heard her say that if someone doesn’t take the last one she would probably just leave her some where

i’m glad u did take that last one genna, because if i would have caught that &#%$ abusing a helpless kitten, the gloves would have come off, and let’s just say i would have taught her a few new places to breathe out of, and the whole experience would be extremely unpleasant.

it’s hard enough for me to try to understand how soemone can dislike a cat, but for a person to be able to abuse one….and worse yet, to PRETEND they care about them, and THEN be WILLINGLY abusive….

seriously, i have declining love for the human populous as a whole. cats r superior. thank you for rising about that inbred (insert series of extremely vulgar and colourful language here, in several languages)!

Hi there, my name is Thomas me and my partner just rescued a black kitten from homelessness and hunger… we think that she is somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks old. We’ve been feeding her some canned chicken that we had in the pantry… it was the only thing we had on short notice anyway she hasn’t pooped for about a day and a half now… well we think… the first night we found her we tried stimulation with a warm wash rag and I saw brown stains on it and I think that was poop but my partner is convinced that it was just from the last time she pooped. Then again today while i was at work he saw her what he thought was pee but it was really brown… kinda like an extremely dehydrated urine looks like but smelled like the chicken we’ve been feeding her… dose anyone have any comments to help us? We’re worried that she’ll get sick…

If she is between 4 and 6 weeks, you probably won’t have to bottle feed her. But get some goat’s milk from the grocery. It’s in the refrigerated milk section, or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed so add water 1 to 1. It sounds like she is dehydrated, and she will need liquid and the goat’s milk is full of good probiotics for her digestive system. It she was starving, her body is using the nutrition from the food, so she may not poop right away. Get some good wet food, even some with gravy, as she needs the liquid. Keep an eye on her, if she doesn’t poop in a day or two, a vet visit would be your best bet.
