I did see a similar post from a year ago, but I was hoping someone had new information. I am fostering a kitten that is 1 week and 5 days old. The kitten was brought into the local shelter that I volunteer at, after the mother left her on someones porch when it was only a couple hours old (after her other kittens had drowned in the pool). The mother is a cat that was left behind by the neighbors, but the couldn’t catch her. The kitten is nice and healthy otherwise, been checked out by a vet. Urinating, pooping plenty. Getting nice and plum, loves to eat…..I’ve been feeding her goats milk from day one, since she wouldn’t eat kitty formula. Although she seems healthy, she seems to be losing hair on he back. She’s not bald, there’s a soft layer of fuz where the fur used to be. Does anyone have advice or know what is happening?

She is losing her baby fuzz to make room for her real fur to start coming in. Its a lot like the yellow down baby birds have on them before they get their feathers – this is why baby kittens (and baby birds) cant regulate their own body temperatures when they are so small.

Thank you so much. I just wanted to be sure there wasn’t anything wrong with her. I read some posts from last year and it didn’t seem like anyone knew for sure what was happening. Thanks again!

I have one more question. I’ve taken care of kittens before but usually a little older. She’s eating great but when it comes time to put the bottle in her mouth she always freaks out and pulls up and scratched on my hands. Is that normal? I have worked with a lot of other baby animals and they don’t do that…..and I’m worried she may get over excited.
