Hello, So Tanjo is an active happy lil boy at 5 weeks now. He eats and plays no issue. We are trying to potty train and it is slow but he is learning. We use crushed walnut shells for the litter. We started him on kitten Pate. He gets a scoop in the morning and a scoop at night (we have tried a whitefish flavor and a chicken flavor). He doesn’t seem to like the chicken flavor one. We water down his milk as well. We cant get him to drink just water yet. With all this said, we noticed last night he has patches on him that look like dried up milk, but is actually flaky skin. I am not sure if this is an allergy of some kind, dandruff or something else going on. he doesn’t really scratch, doesn’t shake head or anything like that. Doesn’t seem to be in pain. Any suggestions, ideas or help?

I also have a kitten about the same age as Tanjo, and he is still a bottle baby. I’m not even trying to wean him from that yet as he needs the hydration. He likes his wet food, around 3 times a day with a bottle in between. I haven’t even tried him with water, he sees the bowl the other cats use and will eventually figure it out. He pees and poops on his own in the litter box that the other cats use. I know most sites say that kittens should be eating on their own and weaned by 5 weeks, but IMO that’s just rubbish. I’ve raised lots of kittens, and none of them are ready at this early age.

As to if it’s a rash or dandruff, I can’t say. Probably a trip to the vet to check for parasites, get him wormed and started on vaccinations would be a good idea.

    Hello Kittyzee
Thank you for the reply back. Since I asked this question we have changed the type of litter we were using and quit feeding chicken pate and Tanjo’s flaky skin has made big improvements. His ears, belly and tail are all clear but still has some patches on his feet. With that said we firmly believe it was an allergic reaction to one of those items. We don’t have any other cats / pets in the house so all of our training was done by us. Our lil boy has a vet apt on the 17th for his first exam and shots. He has steadily gained weight and gotten bigger so that is a good thing. I hope we haven’t done anything wrong by taking him off the bottle and letting him drink from his dish. He has done very well with that and we now give him 3 meals of pate a day with as many drinks he wants. Once he has his vet visit I will report back.

Update: Tanjo had his first vet visit. He is healthy, no worms or anything. He is about .5lbs smaller than the average kitten his age, but other than that perfect. He did have an allergy reaction to the litter and his skin is 100% improved since changing it. The vet advised giving him more food a little at a time so we just added an extra feed time for him.
