At nine o’clock this morning, I discovered a small black kitten in our bushes, meowing constantly. I waited until 1:30 in the afternoon to see if the mama cat would return, but she never showed up. At around 2:00 I put together a box with some soft towels and put a litter box in my bathroom. With the help of some neighbors, we caught it and brought it inside. I also borrowed some canned liquid kitten formula from them and I have been feeding the kitten with an eyedropper since I don’t have a baby bottle on hand and can’t make a run to the store until tonight.

The kitten continues to meow when left alone in the bathroom, but when I or a family member sit with it, the baby quiets down. I continue to offer the eyedropper with formula in it, and the kitten licks at it until it’s full. The kitten is old enough to run around the bathroom, roll in it’s box and wash itself. It has functioning eyes and quite the voice! The ears are erect and its fur is fluffy and clean. I don’t know the sex of the cat; I’ll look later today or tomorrow once it’s settled in more. I will try to post a picture or two.

This is my first time with a baby animal and I’m not sure how to go about rearing it! And advice would be much appreciated!

I’ll post some links for you on hand rearing kittens, but it sounds like your kitten is older than a newborn. Does it have teeth, and have you tried giving it some kitten wet food? If it can eat wet food, you won’t have to worry about bottle feeding. If it cannot, then goat’s milk is the way to go and you can get it at the grocery in the milk section, or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed, so add water 1 to 1. Looking at the links provided, there are sections that describe how old a kitten may be by it’s physical appearance. We usually wrap a heating pad in a towel and put it on low and put it in the kitten nest to keep the kitten warm. It’s important, as cold kittens cannot process food. If this kitten is mobile, I’m thinking it’s at least 4 weeks old or maybe even a little older. Let us know how you are doing, or post some pics and we can help you!
