Farah, you are a brave and courageous person to do what you know in your heart is right. Cats and kittens in many countries are not thought well of, and even here people throw them away like trash! That’s why I have had so many pregnant mama kitties literally thrown out on my doorstep. I will never turn a cat away; all they want is shelter, food and love–such easy things to provide and they give your their devotion in return. You are doing such incredible things against frightening odds, please be safe. Much love to you and Lifa and your other kitties too.

    Hello again

Thank you both Buttons and Kittyzee for your encourgement and really nice words. I can’t thank god enough for people like you
some updates on Lifa’s status, her right eye is a bit better and she opens it but there is something like a white “screen?layer?something” if that’s the right word, that covers half her eyeball, like when a cat wakes up from her sleep , you don’t see the whole eyeball but as she fully awakens, you can.
Lifa’s eye just have this thing all the time.

Her left eye is not that good, the swollen had went down considerably but there is just “meat” and I can’t see the eyeball at all, just red flesh.Do you think her left eye is gone and lost forever?

Aside from that, she is eager to play so I let her go out with my other kittens and boy did they welcome her and she just jumps at each one and grabs them playfully, I pull her away when they get a bit rough while playing with her.

She eats fine and drinks water alot.

I got the goat’s milk and it was bad, sour and had this awful smell,I think it gone bad due to the heat.

Went to every big pharmacy in my region and some others, none heard of lysine . Do you know if it has a trade name please?

Again thank you for your great and amazing support and help

    Hey farah ๐Ÿ™‚

Well there’s good and bad news of sorts.. The white film is what’s called the third eyelid and all cats/ dogs have them .. They generally are visible and stretch across a cats eye ball when a cat is sleepy and just waking or sometimes if the third eyelid is shown perminantely it could indicate any thing for an eye irritation to a cat by feeling all that well in themselves if they have an upset tummy or high temperature..

So I wouldn’t worry to much about that .. As for the “meaty eye .. That sounds to be very badly inflamed ๐Ÿ™ an there’s nothing you can do about that when it’s reached this stage without strong anti-inflammatories from the vet .. So again if you can call one close by and see if they can even post something out to you.. When an eye reaches that stage of swelling it generally can’t heal itself or if it does eventually heal you’ll have permanent damage..

Things are probably no better where you are at the moment ๐Ÿ™ I just hope you can get in touch with a vet and they can offer a little help.. You’ve done amazingly well so far!! Especially in your current situation ! I wish I could help more !

As for the L-lysine is sounds like your only acess to it will be online .. So if you can order it online.. Even amazon probably stocks it..

Thank you Buttons , I can’t order it online,I can’t access that service here, the vet I got his number was the only one I know of.
Do you know of any remedies for inflammatories , like warm tea patches or an eye drop for humans that can be ok for kittens? her behaviour is ok and she loves to play (even when she can’t see , she feels her way most of the time).

The left eye’s socket was really swollen but it went down and now the eyeball lokks like meat or something.

The right one is better, even though it still close and needs some wiping before she can open it .

Besides, there was fire in the sulfur factory in our district and the air was filled with bad smell, does this hurt the eye as well???

A cold green tea tea bag might help to sooth the eye of you can hold it against the very swollen eye .. Turmeric can help with inflammation so maybe that’s worth a try .. Turmeric powder is fine to use about 1/4 teaspoon in her food .. It’s worth a try your very limited ๐Ÿ™

Hello again, Lifa’s condition is getting worse, tried the tea and tried the turmeric , the first still shows no sign of reducing the swelling and the second, she won’t even touch the food that smells of anything strange.
I called a friend whose father is a professor in College of Veterinary and he said that an eyedrop by name of OPTIFLOX that comes in eyedrops and ointment forms MAY help her. Have you heard of it? is it for humans or cats?
Lifa’s screaming and scratching me if I touch either eye now which is making it even harder for me to put anything in her eyes
I know I am troubling you and you are doing all you can to help me, but I swear that the situation here is very dangerous to risk going anywhere outside our houses and the area around.

I’ve never heard of that medication Farah but if it’s recommended by a veterinary professor I’d definitely try it..

    Hello all
Sorry for my very late reply and updates
I have some good news and bad news
Lifa’s right eye had fully recovered , it is clean and the medicine worked for her.
But the bad news is, her left eye is lost ๐Ÿ™ she will only have one fully functioned eye. I tried for almost 3 weeks to save it, but I guess it was really too late.
She was eager to join her adopted brother (Named : Hitler ๐Ÿ˜€ ) and she goes wherever he goes and they are togther all the time
I have a question though, the left eye is dead and it seems like a lump of meat in the socket, will it hurt her or will it cause her harm or anything if it stays there?
Here is the recent pic i took of Lifa.

    Hi, Farah,

You have done an amazing job saving the sight in one of Lifa’s eyes. I am so sorry that she has lost the other one. Yes, in an ideal world, her bad eye should be removed and her eyelid sewn shut, this is what vets do when a cat loses an eye. My cat Jasper lost an eye through a fight; another cat clawed his eye and he lost the sight in it, so it had to be removed. But it is not worth risking your own life to get this done now, I hope that your part of the world will become more peaceful very soon and that in time Farah can get the treatment from a vet that she needs. Perhaps you can talk to your friend whose father is a veterinary professor and he can advise you. You are obviously a very brave and caring person. Animals are treated very badly all over the world but it is not right, it is terribly wrong and you will always find people like you who love animals wherever you go.

Is Hitler called Hitler because of his black moustache? I have to admit, I love cats so much that I hate to see them given the names of such horrible people, even as a joke. One of my cats — she turned up at my door because she used to live across the road and when her family moved, she kept coming back here but she couldn’t go back to her old house because there were two big dogs there — anyway, her real name was Nothing. But I thought that was such an awful name for a lovely ginger and white girl that I changed it to Nuffy. (I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV and so I thought at least Nuffy was better than Nothing!)

Farah, I understand that it must be very hard to get things where you are. Lysine is found in beans, cheese, yogurt, meat, milk, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, and beef or ox heart. If you can get Lifa to eat any yoghurt or cheese (often cats love these), or sprinkle yeast over her food, or feed her ox heart, you will be helping her get lysine.

If things change, and you can use the internet to order, this is the website in the US where I sometimes order things from that I can’t get in New Zealand. It has Lyseine/lysine for cats: http://search.entirelypets.com/search#w=lyseine
But it would probably be cheaper to buy the human variety: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Health-Personal-Care-Lysine-Nutritional-Supplements/zgbs/hpc/6940111011

Lysine or lyseine or L-lysine is an essential amino acid, that both humans and cats need. We cannot make it in our bodies so we have to get it in food (often meat or dairy products, such as beef heart or caseine in milk). You may be able to find it in a health store for humans, if there is such a thing around you.

It does have a scientific name but I don’t think anyone ever uses it, it is: 2,6-diaminohexanoic acid, alpha-epsilon-diaminocaproic acid. This website tells you more about it: http://www.drugs.com/npc/lysine.html

I wish you the very best, please keep in touch with us and tell us how you and your kitties are doing.

Thank you Jcat for your advise and the links, I asked a friend of mine if its possible to get some things from the internet and he told me about Aramix, it seems i can subscribe with them and order online, I was planning on going today but the area leading to the office was blocked (due to some bombings yesterday) but I will go as soon as I can, also I wonder, can you tell me if its possible to order any flu medicine for cats? winter is harsh here for cats and they usually get flu and the little ones die from it .
As for Hitler’s name, we usually call him (Hatawi) which is a nickname (we have no love for hitler and his regime, it is very similar to the regime that ruled us for 30 years) but as you correctly guessed, the name was given due to his mustache
Love the name Nuffy ( I am a huge fan of Buffy myself and I once had a badass tomcat called Spike ๐Ÿ˜€ )
Can I use Nuffy for a future kitty of mine please???

Also I would ask you to kindly tell me what should I have (I’m planning on putting a small cat’s pharmacy that have the essential medicines, like eye drops, dewormer etc) as I seem to need them all the time.

I know I will annoy you , but i want to know about a sickness that affected almost all my cats about 6 months ago, they all seemed to have had swelling in their mouths, foul smell come from the mouth, decayed teeth (they were perfectly white before they were affected) and total loss of appetite to the point of not even drinking water and they all died from starvation and I believe the sickness itself, whatever it was. I was helpless, I didn’t know what ailed them.

Any information would help, maybe (Allah forbid) if any had the same sickness, I could treat it?

Thank you again for your help.

Hi, Farah. Glad to meet another Buffy fan; another TDKer, my friend Kate, who also lives in NZ (on the Kapiti coast) had a boy cat called Spike after Spike the vampire too! Cat people obviously have great taste! You are more than welcome to use Nuffy for a future cat, it would be great to know the name lives on. She was a lovely girl.

I wish I could help about the flu. Is it cat flu? If so, I’m afraid, if the mums and the kittens are unvaccinated, then it does take a toll on kittens. They can sometimes come through it if they have had enough to eat and are warm enough and their immune systems are up to it but otherwise, it is often a killer and I’m afraid the only solution is for the mother cats (and the kittens too, when they become old enough) to get their vaccinations regularly. But it could also be upper respiratory infections due to chronic viruses or just to being too cold. Very young kittens are not able to regulate their body temperatures until they are about six weeks or if they are older but sick, and they die of hypothermia very easily (they can also die of overheating). That’s why litters cuddle together with each other and their mums. They could also have bacterial infections that are causing the illness and need antibiotics. So it is almost impossible to give you a blanket answer on how to help the cats since there might be many different causes, physical and viral and bacterial, for their sickness. All I can say is that good food and shelter, if you are able in any way to help with that, and possibly lysine on their food, will help every cat to fight infection. (There are heaps of instructions on how to build simple shelters for feral cats on the internet, if that is ever something you could help with, just google it or come back here and we will find the links for you).
You probably know much better than me what you need in your cats’ first aid kit, it sounds like you have made a good start. Nutrical is always useful for sick cats and kittens, it is a high calorie paste that you can put on their mouth and they will lick it off even if they are not eating, it will keep them getting the food they need to survive. However, it probably has an expiry date on it once it’s opened, so you might not want to order that until you need it. Neosporin is an antibiotic ointment that seems to help a lot of cats and kittens in the US, I don’t have personal experience with it but it might be very useful. Perhaps you could talk to your friend’s father again about what you might need, but perhaps the best way is to buy things as you need them.
I wish I could help with the terrible sickness but I have no idea. Are you talking about indoor cats and kittens you live with or about cats who live outside and come to you for food? It is obviously something horrible and infectious, unless it
was maybe something poisonous or corrosive that they all ate. Were any of them able to get to a vet? Again I would ask your friend’s father but without being able to examine an animal and test for various problems, it would be almost impossible to say. I hope it never happens again, it sounds horrific.
You will never annoy us by coming here and asking for help with cats; we love them and we love people who try to help them. Unfortnately, we are not vets, just experienced cat owners, so there are loads of things we don’t know but if we can help, we will. Never be afraid to ask questions on here. And please take great care of yourself and don’t take any unnecessary risks ever, the cats of your area need you.

Thank you again Jcat for your reply,My cat is expecting so , if she delivers her kittens safely and if i find two kittens that are similar in colour, i plan on calling them Buffy and Nuffy ๐Ÿ˜€
for the sickness,it affected both indoor cats (Who refused to go out, like, ever) and outside cats, I asked the professor at the time and he said he didn’t know, he also told me that the last couple of years, strange types of sickness affect cats and kill them more than cat flu and other common cats’ sickness, just the year before, many of my cats (and many many more street cats) were affected with a sickness I didn’t know, it caused them to become very weak and it kills within two or three days most. even my friends who had Persian cats, duly vaccinated, also died from this,it affected old cats before the small ones, and I heard from my FB friends in Saudi Arabia, United Emarates and even Syria of similar cases.
For my cats, they are all on good terms with one another, so when it gets cold, they all huddle together, also the kittens im talking about are abandoned ones, two or two and a half month at best, I wonder if i can give them the vaccine myself? can it be ordered online?
I thank you for the links, I went and arranged stuff and will be ordering online very soon. Lysine is the first thing I will order, also two cans of kitten formula just in case.
We build the cats’ houses in the driest place possible, facing away from the winds, but the weather here is 8 months terrible summer and 4 months very cold winter, I guess the cats are not always prepared for such conditions.
a friend also just called me, he will be bringing me a small kitten he found near a restaurant , if she gets here safely, i guess it will the first Nuffy ๐Ÿ™‚

Farah, every reply you send makes me admire you more. You obviously take such great care of the cats, inside and out, building them houses and wanting to vaccinate them. I am afraid I do not think that you could order the vaccines without a veterinarian’s prescription but your friend’s father may be able to. When animals are stressed, and not as well fed or as generally healthy as they could be (the same as with people in battle zones or after natural disasters, such as earthquakes), and are scavenging for food from who knows where or what, and especially if other dead animals are around, and air and water are polluted with contaminants, then new and old diseases and sicknesses emerge very quickly and can spread like wildfire through a population that may never have had that sickness before (called ‘a naive population’ because they have no immunity) or may have known it in the past but it has been kept away by hygienic living conditions, good food, vaccinations and medical treatment. So I can understand new feline diseases emerging in Syria and where you live, where your societies are going through so much tragic disruption — but Saudi Arabia and the UAE as far as I know are very stable societies so it is hard to know why the disease should have spread there, unless there are large populations of stray and feral cats to spread it across the borders, or it can spread to other types of animals who can carry it.
This kind of information is very important and, if most of the vets in your country have closed up or left, you are possibly one of the very few people in your area collecting it, as with globalisation, such diseases can easily spread from country to country (and some animal diseases — though not usually feline diseases — can even eventually spread to humans. It is usually diseases from pigs, bats, birds and primates that are sometimes able to spread to humans.) Keep notes, if you can, and compare them with your friends, and one day you may write an important letter or article to a scientific or veterinary journal that helps scientists to work out what’s going on with these sicknesses and can one day help other cats.

Some links to providing easy shelters for outside cats in the winter. Maybe you could add some of these inside your built shelters:

Hi there! Thank you for taking in a stray kitten and giving it care ๐Ÿ™‚
I had a very similar situation happen to a litter of kittens (the mama was a stray at a gas station). I took the mama in and a week later she had a litter of kittens. They must have been exposed to a herpes virus, probably from the mama cat. The two boy kittens were fine, one female kitten passed away and the other kitten (who eventually became my soulcat!) had a damaged eye from the virus. I took her to two different vets and both said her eye was fine and my hubby used to very lovingly tease her she had a zombie eye. Both vets said her eye was healing and she did have some sight from it. So I guess it depends on the extent of damage to the eye.

For now it sounds like you are doing the best you can do with your resources ๐Ÿ™‚

So so sorry for not answering, had a rough month here and I didn’t get two stray kittens who my friends planned on bringing to me due to them dying by cars. felt really helpless but I guess that’s life. I took another stray and now asked for some wool old cloths to warm my cat who is expecting.
Thank you again Jcat for your words and know that I feel so hopeful and happy when I see your and everyone’s encouragement.
Thank you also for the links, I asked my brother to give me some old furniture he made and isn’t in need of and he gave me a small cabinate with no door but is wide enough to house my 6 cats (sizes differ from 3 months’ kitten to a year old cats) and stuffed it with old wool cloths, The cats settled in nicely and is facing away from the wind, and good thing I set it now, the weather turned suddenly icy cold here, high winds and rains, but they are comfortable there.
I want to ask you something , is ginger roots good for my cats? I drink it when I am cold and it cures me of it, I read its ok for cats, but do you know if it can cure cold? they are bound to catch it eventually, since they are all huddled up together and one infected cat can transfer it to the rest.
I can use a syringe to give it to them if I have to, Ginger roots has some really good benefits for humans, I hope it works for cats.
The lysgne I received but was damaged ๐Ÿ™ the bottle cracked and the mailman told me it happened in the airport or something, don’t know if its true or not, but I found Goat’s cheese, will it do???
Also do you know of any herbs I can try and buy that may help the cats? I got a bag of dried catnip. but do you of anything else that might be good for them?
Also, I have a dewormer for humans (But i checked with my friend;s dad and he assured me its ok for cats) and also have Flagyl (metronidazole) which I used (after making sure its not harmful to my cats) for when I saw they had blood in their stool and it worked fine. Also used Optiflox eye drops (for humans) for my kitten Lifa which was very helpful for one eye , the other i think was beyond saving.
I am well aware of the fact that many human medicine maybe and is harmful for cats, but they are the only alternative I could find.

Sorry for taking much of your time and wish you all and your cats the best ๐Ÿ™‚
