    Hello again

I have an issue with a small kitten I have found about less than a month, she was thrown in the garbage near our house and was about two weeks old, my cat who had two older kittens of her own adopted her but she was already in the process of weaning her own kittens so she only was feeding her milk for a very short time, she is somewhat active and love to cuddle. cute little thing.
a week ago, her eye started to get swollen and have this pus and her eyelids started swollen shut,I started wiping it with warm water and she would barely open it and it will return again and she just sits alone, even her mom won’t come near her to clean her up. besides, she had this nasty cut that I tried so hard to clean but it just keeps oozing but now it had sealed and she is walking again on it.

Her eye oozed blood two days ago and i immediately moved her inside the house and tried to wipe her eyes (Both of them got infected) with warm tea and keep her clean.

I know she needs a vet immediately but I can’t get her to one due to the bad security situation here (ISIS and exploding cars and all) but I have no place to go, I would have asked sooner but there was no internet until today.

I swear this is not a troll post.

Can you try and help me please? for the sake of the little one?

Oh poor little one .. You could try making a warm salt-water mixture about a teaspoon of salt to a mug of warm water and clean her eyes with this it will help kill some of the bacteria .. But if the infection is bad enough she’ll need oral antibiotics or an eye cream.. I know A lot of the ointments for human eye infections are used for treating eye infections in cats.. If there is anyway to ring your vet and get the name of an eye ointment to treat the infection you might be able to get in a pharmacy nearby untill it’s safe to get to the vets..

Also just incase the eye infection has been brought on by feline herpes ( very common in kittens and cause eye swelling that results in bacterial infections) then goats milk could help it’s got L-lysine that subdues the feline herpes virus .. Or if you can get L-lysine in a capsule form even better again 500mg twice daily in her food .

I’m so sorry about your situation ! Your doing great things.

The one I have has left the country, my dad’s a dentist so when he saw the symptoms, he said I may be able to give her antibiotics (eye drops) but I was hesitant as its for humans, he told me to ask if its ok, I took a two weeks off work to stay with the little one as she needs her eyes to be clean every hour but her eyes are really close and they hurt her.
I will go to the pharmacy to get the L-lysine you suggested, thank you so much for your help

As long as it’s a penicillin based antibiotic I think in your situation it’s the only option you have.. See if you can contact any vet in the area and ask of a human variety that can be used in this emergency situation..

The pharmacy may be able to help with dosage as she is so small dosage will be important ..

Avoid any medication with paracetamol this is toxic to cats

The water-Salt seems somehow to have relieved her and she was able to open her eyes a bit.
    Thank you Buttons.

    Hello
My kitten still can’t open her eyes and she is getting worse, when I went to get the L-Lysine , the pharmacist didn’t know what it is, can you please tell me what it is? What should I ask for? The salt-water is hurting her eye as its very swollen , I fear I am late to save her eyes, its getting worse.
Please help, I don’t want her to lose sight.

Farah, L-Lysine is an amino acid that can be found in pill form over the counter. You open the capsules and sprinkle it on the food for the kitten and it helps with their immune system since the kitten is probably fighting off the feline herpes virus. This virus is not fatal in anyway, my cats all have it. The important thing right now is getting a penicillin based antibiotic for her like Buttons said. You can buy L-Lysine over the internet, just type in L-Lysine and several places will come up for purchase. Was your father able to get her the eye drops? Even if they are for humans, I believe the drops are the same for the kitten. At this point, you don’t have many other options. I am so sorry your kitten is suffering Farah, just find comfort in knowing you are doing all you can for her.

this is the little one, I call her (Lifa) , I tried a method I hope it does not do her harm, I wiped her eyes with a warm cloth then tried and force (very gently)her eyelids to open a bit, I opened the right eye and she started to look around a bit but the left side still worries me sick, she eats fine and since she can’t clean herself I clean her daily.
Please tell me did i do wrong by trying to open her eyelids? I couldn’t put the eye drops before in her eyes, since they are swollen shut. Managed to put some now.

Uploaded her picture (hope its clear)

Buttons gave me great advice and I am thankful and thank you Kittyzee for your reply and kind words, they mean a lot to me.
My dad brought the eye drops (even tested them on my eyes to see if they burn or not) but since her eyelids started to shut so strongly i wasn;t able to apply it properly, as I mentioned a few minutes ago, I tried and opened her eyelids a bit to apply the drops. I hope it won’t damage her much.
Thank you again for all your help and support. love from me and Lifa πŸ™‚

You did not do harm by opening her eyes to put the drops in. That is the way to do it, warm, damp cloth softening the crust, then pulling them open gently. Put the drops in. You are correct in washing her yourself to keep her clean. Good job Farah!

Oh Farah your doing great ! Thanks KZ for reassuring Farah πŸ™‚ what your doing is great for the situation your in right now… KZ is right it’s fine to gently open eyes to apply the drops and to clean the eyes.. It’s very good she has an appetite and a lot of eye infection are localized ones so other than her eyes feeling a bit itchy she will not be feeling sick.. I agree that this is more than likely a bacterial infection brought on by feline herpes and as KZ says it’s not a life threatening virus as long as any upper respiratory infections are treated and controlled .. But the use of L-lysine in her diet will help prevent these “flare ups” from happening in the future.. Once a cat is over the year mark feline herpes tends not to be a problem unless the cat gets very stressed or they sick kind of like a person gets cold sores when stress it has a cold or flu.. If you can get L-lysine from the internet that would be great .. I would check with your pharmacy again maybe ask the management as it’s a very common shelf item cause so many people but it to treat their cold sores..

Alternatively if you can get your hands on some pasteurized goats milk that’s very high in L-lysine naturally.. And goats milk is lactose free so great for growing kittens .. It also adds good gut flora to the kittens system helping with nutrient absorption

Dear Buttons and Kittyzee, you are amazing and your words give me the willpower to move forward.
Cats and kittens are very badly treated here and I see many sad and brutal stories of mistreating such beautiful ,smart and loving animals
My house contains about 3 stray kittens that were literally Thrown at our doorsteps and I almost stepped on one such tiny creature.
Its people like you that make me feel I am no freak( according to how society sees me here πŸ™ )
Lifa’s right eye is a little better, I give her the drops every three hours and she is starting to look around with it, even running. while her left still swollen shut, i try and open it gently but she screams in pain and I can’t bear to hear her and know she is in pain. is it ok if I apply a Topical anesthetic??? don’t be mad at me, I won’t do it unless I am sure it will do her no harm.
Went to about 5 pharmacies today and no one had Lycine πŸ™
Goat’s milk I asked and was not available here, it should be requested and take about a week or 5 days to get me some .as it is unusual to many.
Thank you so much for your support and understanding, many love from Lifa and me πŸ™‚

Farah your not a freak at all πŸ™‚

I understand somewhat the negitive attitude some people have towards cats .. Cats aren’t well thought of in Iteland either.. Your are doing great !! When you get the goats milk that will help with weight gain too πŸ™‚

I know hearing her cry in horrible but I would try and clean the swollen eye again an add the drops as they seem to be helping with the other eye.. I hate the sound of cats crying too it’s so hard to hear but in this case you may need to be a little firm and give that ba eye a good clean ..

Most antiseptic creams are for external cuts so unless the pharmacy says it’s for eyes I wouldn’t use it and just use the drops for now
