We have been hand rearing two kittens, they are now two weeks and I am aware that in the next week or so they will get more active and need to start litter training etc. So what are people’s kitten set ups like. They seem too small to give them the run of an entire room. What do other people have set up?

I have always used a large dog crate, set up with the bed, litter box (small enough for them to enter and exit). Eventually, some food and water. They won’t need that for a couple of weeks or more. This keeps them confined but they get used to the comings and goings of the household, the noises of appliances, voices, and other animals, etc.

Then, you can open the door to the crate where they can come and go as they wish, eventually getting rid of the crate when they have acclimated themselves to the household, the positioning of a litter box, food bowls etc.

Here’s something else you can use.

Just tried a dog crate and they walked through the holes as if there was no walls, so need to rethink that!

Since you have the crate, get some screen and secure it on the sides. This will block the holes.

Thanks, not sure what you mean by “screen” but I was thinking of making some fabric sides, or even attaching some chicken wire to discourage the small heads popping through. I’ll just have to be careful that no bits of wire are poking out the wrong way. I’ll post a picture if I ever get it done.

The wire has too many “pokey” things and kittens will bite it. Pick up window screen at any hardware store and secure it to the outside either by tying in on (with thread) or use packing tape. If you have some plexiglass at home, and who doesn’t , place it on instead.

The problem with fabric is they can’t see through it.

I’ll have to go shopping tomorrow I think!
Hard work this feral kitten rearing!
    Thanks for the advice

It is hard work but the love you receive makes it worth it. 🙂

In the end I sewed net curtain to the outside of the dog crate and that worked perfectly. Tbh by 4 weeks they had out grown it and now wandering round, strutting their stuff. Just made them another cat cave, which they seem to love.
Also any body worrying about poop, ours rarely did one, but as soon as they started on solids, they popped perfectly (in the litter box too!)
