    My one month old kitten was very close to death yesterday. Her internal temp got really low and we don’t know why, she was unresponsive and limp. After a steroid and warm fluid shot from the vet and my desperate triemys to get her moving, she made It through the night and everything is starting to look up. My problem now is I’m having a hard time getting her to eat. Most the time she will refuse the bottle. I been giving her nutrical to keep her sugar from dropping when she won’t eat. I wake her up every so many hours to make sure she moves around to keep her blood flowing but she resists and lays back down. I’m afraid she is going to get really bad again and don’t know what else to do. I asked the vet but he has no idea what caused it in the first place but he thinks she may be anemic (no tests were done yet) I know I’m supposed to keep her warm and I do when she is laying down but I can’t find clothes to fit her for when she is moving around. Any advice on how I could help this lil princess or how to motivate her would be appreciated. I’ve already tried everything I could think of.

    Hi May, just to say i’m really sorry to hear this happened to your kitty, I wish her the best and I hope she pulls through. I don’t really know anything I can say that will be that helpful, just continuing words of encouragement and that you’re doing a fantastic job! Try wrapping a scarf around her and tying it at the top (sort of in a figure of 8 with a knot over her back) to keep her warm when she is moving around. Are there any other vets you can take her to? Specialists? Are you doing tests? If she may be anaemic you could try feeding her foods high in iron like raw liver, fish, or even spinach and see if she perks up. Even a little tuna might be helpful, although not too much (can be bad for kitties). Are you still bottle feeding her? That could be good too, to make sure she is getting nutrients! Keep us updated on her progress, best of luck!

    Sorry I just re-read what you posted and that she is refusing the bottle. I know this sounds horrible but maybe you could syringe a little into her mouth like medicine, so at least she is getting some!

    I got her to eat a little a few hours ago. It was about .02 oz poor thing only wants to sleep. She is refusing to use the litter box also so I’ve had to revert back to stimulating her. The scarf sound like a good idea but would be kinda hard.till the same sizes my hand, she is really small to be a month old( her brother is twice her size) I’m gona try to use one of the pieces of fleece that I had cut to make mini blankies for her, to make a sweeter. I just have to wait til morning so I can get something from the store to fasten it in the back

    Princess is not doing so well again. She is in the same state she was last night, limp, unresponsive but still breathing. I really dont know what to do this is the same time it happened last night and I checked her temp and its normal. I can’t take her to the vet this time because he is out of town until Tuesday.

    Make sure she is not dehydrated again. Tent test her skin to see how it responds if she is dehydrated she will need subcu fluids again. Asap.

    Stroke honey or nutrical onto her mouth. I’ll give you the tent test in case you don’t know it. Can you keep her against your skin, against your heart? With pedialyte and nutrical, you’re really doing all you can but you do need to force feed her if she won’t eat. Best of luck.

    The tent test is to test for dehydration:

    Tent test: pick up a good pinch of kitten’s skin at the neck and let go.If it snaps back immediately, she’s hydrated okay. If it takes a little time to go back down, or, worse, it stays up in a ‘tent’ shape, she needs fluids, such as pedialyte (from the supermarket, children’s aisle) or home-made pedialyte below.

    Note, in the United Kingdom, pedialyte is called Dioralyte. Also known as rehydration salts.

    Pedialyte formula (from World Health Organization)…no preservatives so short life-span

    * 1 cup water (boiled then cooled)

    * 2 tsp sugar

    * 1/8 tsp salt

    * 1/8 tsp baking soda

    (this Pedialyte formula gives needed electrolytes & some sugar for energy)

    Combine all ingredients and warm slightly.

    Make new after 24 hours.

    There should be emergency vet cover in your area, if you ring your normal vet, they should give you a number to ring or another vet to get hold of, or is there an emergency clinic in your area?

    I have been giving her nutrical every two hours weather she eats or not since it usually perks her up enough to where I can feed her without forcing her.she goes into the unresponsive state and it usually last several hours so I continue the nutrical but the vet told me the first time not to put fluids in her cuz her throat wasn’t all the way open and she would drown. She is acting OK now but she has done this three times already and I’m hoping she doesn’t do it again tonight.
    There is only one vet her and the on call vet is out of town til morning and I plan on staying up with her all night to keep an eye on her until I can get her there.

    So sorry to hear about your kitten. I had two kittens do this out of the same litter a few years ago. One survived, which is my sweet Thumbalina, and her sister Lexi, did not. It’s so strange how they can bottom out and come back, and then some just can’t. I hope your little one perks up enough to get some liquid nutrition in her tummy. Please keep us posted.
