I have to give Kit sub-Q fluids every morning. I’m also giving her antibiotics for what the vet called a secondary kidney infection. She has comorbid hyperthyroidism, and I have to put cream on the inside of her ear for that. She can’t tolerate the pills.

Penny had a blood panel done before anesthesia for teeth cleaning, and they found a couple of her kidney function values to be high. For now, she’s just joining her sister in eating the prescription kidney food.

If Kit stops eating, stops urinating, can’t jump on and off the bed, or becomes lethargic, she is no longer enjoying a high-quality of life and I will have her helped to the Bridge. The doctor and I have discussed this.

Please, God, not my Penny. I love Kit, of course, but her condition is already advanced and it’s just a matter of time, long or short. Penny has lived with me since she was 14 weeks old, and she will be 11 years old in March. (Kit is 10.) Losing Penny is something I can’t even think about. Not now. Not yet. Please.

So sorry to hear this. It hurts terribly – especially for you, because you know what’s coming.

Kit and Penny don’t know, although Kit knows that her life isn’t as pleasant and easy as it used to be. When the time comes . . .

It sometimes hurts so much to be the human, to be the one who has to make that decision. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I’m sorry you are dealing with this, Leeny. I also see I missed Kit’s birthday – please give her a belated birthday kiss from me.

Will those of you still here who are also in contact with the Facebook group let them know about this, and also about Quinn (see the thread, “Quinn is leaving”)?

I’m sorry to hear about all these things. I hadn’t been following the pastoral issue, though that is important in any “significant” community, faith or otherwise. I hope this is not the case, but “clusters” of deaths, human, feline or of other sentient beings are common. I had three close human friends die within a month, almost 20 years ago. One had helped me with my struggling stray kitten befor he and his spouse (with whom I’m still close, but she is fine, knock wood) took off on a long journey to visit Indigenous communities in different parts of North America.

Aww Leeny, I am so sorry to hear about Kit and now Penny’s elevated renal numbers. That’s rough, I’ll keep all of you in my prayers. <3

I was able to give Kit a weekend off from the sub-Q fluids. The vet told me to check her hydration status by pulling up the skin on the back of her neck and seeing how long it takes to go back down; you all know how that’s done. On Saturday morning, I checked for the first time. The skin I pulled up didn’t just go back down, it snapped down like a rubber band! On Sunday morning, the skin went back down normally.

Because Kit had eaten and urinated, I was able to let her out of her apartment during the weekend, too. That can only be done when I’m there to observe her, to see if she eats from a bowl other than her own (she ate from Penny’s bowl, but when she started eating from Cedar’s bowl, I had to put that away; his food isn’t the renal diet) or urinates in one of the other litter boxes. She climbed to the top of the kitty tower just like old times. I’m afraid she wasn’t very interested in visiting with her sister and brother, but they never were really bonded anyway.

I know she’s terminal, but she’s still a happy cat. I’m just working to postpone the termination for as long as possible. I listed the signs that will indicate to me that it’s time to go to the Bridge, but I think she’ll tell me. They usually do.

Hi Leeny – I’m glad to hear Kit is rallying for you and enjoying life. Yes, I’m certain she will tell you. I never knew what was wrong with Jiggs, but I asked him to tell me when he was ready to go and he did. Great for both of you to give the sub q’s a break.
Wishing you peace and joy as you spend precious times together.

Every happy and painless minute she has with you is a blessing. Enjoy her now and know you will have an eternity to enjoy her in the future.
