I received a job offer this morning for a temporary three month assignment at Seagate Technologies as an Executive Assistant to the SVP covering for a maternity leave. Yippee!!

The downside is it is only a three month temp job and the commute is 10 miles longer than it is now (current is 23 miles each way and the new one would be 33 miles each way with the commute time being either the same or about another 10 to 15 minutes longer). Also, another downside is my current temp job ends third week of Jan and the new temp job would end in December depending on the new baby and all.

The upside was I was informed that they there is an opening for a permanent position at their other location that is closer to home for me and that if all goes well, they would recommend me for the position. I would want to find out more about what level the position is and all the details which I could do within the next month or so.

This of course means I will have to notify the temp agency for Adobe that I won’t be applying for the five month temp job as well as notifying the Apple recruiter that I won’t be interviewing for the perm job for now. Darn double darn!

Hubby says to go for this temp job at Seagate if it means a better opportunity and since there may be layoffs for temps in the next month at my current temp assignment, better to take it now then wait and possibly be laid off. November is a bad month to find a new temp job or even a perm one.

    Any suggestions?

Hmmm. Tricky, but I think I’m with Hubby on this one. For a start, there’s always the possibility that Pregnant Woman won’t want to come back to work after she’s had the baby- or might want to extend her maternity leave. Companies always like to hire a known quantity for a permanent position if they can; having you as a temp gives them that *try before you buy* option. And surely you’d be able to get seasonal temp work (although admittedly retail rather than office based) in the run up to Christmas, which would at least mean you’d keep working/earning til the New Year?

And let’s face it, you’d be waaaaay happier, so preserving your sanity has got to be a big part of the equation. How would you feel if you turned this down, then didn’t get the Adobe job?

    Good luck making the decision!

Whoo Hoo! I agree with MCW – You are not happy at your current temp job, and the one at Seagate definitely seems to offer more possibilities. However, I can see that you would be reluctant to give up interviewing with Apple for a permanent position. Any way that you can get a quick update on that situation before you make your decision?

Now it just got trickier….I just got a email from Apple HR stating they want to find out what my availability is for interviewing for the Apple position. I emailed them back with either available early morning or late afternoon (I can always say I have a doctor’s appt).

I also forgot to mention that after I spoke with the temporary contact at Seagate, she says it is all contingent on my background check going through and they won’t have that answer till the afternoon. They are kind of jumping the gun on this but the preggie woman is due soon and I guess they really need someone asap. Also, found out they are hiring me even though another candidate has Seagate experience! It must mean I really impressed the SVP and the EA. Interesting..hmmm.

    OK –

1)is this the temp or perm position?

    2) when can you see them vs when do you have to give a decision regarding the maternity leave job?

Basically, can you string either party out/along until you have more information to make your final decision?

I was in the same boat at the beginning of last year, having been made redundant, and then finding myself with a 90% chance of a perm job on the same day as being offered a maternity cover position…I held out on the temp job and was able to push the perm one into confirming one way or the other more quickly. Result? Perm confirmed, and I’m still there…

    Play hard ball!

MCW…the maternity coverage is for a three month temp assignment at Seagate. Apple (aka Apple Computers before the name change due to iPod success) is a perm job.

My thinking is I do the temp job, go on the interview at Apple providing they don’t require more than one interview and then if Apple offers, I take it. If Apple doesn’t offer, I at least have the temp job till December and then there may be a possibility of a perm opportunity in another location closer to home.

First of all…I still have to pass the background check that the temp agency is currently running. They won’t have the final yes or no till this afternoon.

Tomorrow! Can you believe that! They are in a hurry since the pregnant woman is due soon.

Kind of a good position to be in, but on the other hand it’s a bad one!!

Good luck at making a decision, Karin. I’m still waiting to hear about an interview for the secretarial positon at the school. But I just submitted my application on Monday, so I’ll give it until Friday then I’ll call.

Yay, Karin. I say take the temp job at Seagate and get out of your current temp job. Then go to the Apple interview and if they offer you the job, great, if not, at least you’ll have a better temp (it’s gotta be!) job than you do now!

    Good luck!

Tomorrow! Wow – that really is short notice! No wiggle room there. I think your strategy is good. Go for the temp job at Seagate but keep your options at Apple open. Good luck!

I am still keeping my fingers crossed, MMM that you are called for an interview and all. I know that most government agencies take a long time to fill positions but I don’t know if that is the case with schools. I guess it depends on the school district.

Good luck MMM! Finger, toes, and Sylvesters paws are all crossed for you.

Good luck to the both of you. Karin, take the temp job, interview for Apple and if you like that one better, you can leave the temp job. Don’t want to see you without any job. MMM, hope your job come through for you too. Saying prayers for both of you. Love, hugs and purrs Lynn

Karin, great news on Seagate. Since big companies tend to work slow, you could be halfway through the temp job before Apple is ready to make an offer. Fingers crossed for you and MMM.

Great Dane it is because you are so highly caffeinated that you can type so super fast!

Great Dane, I have run into that speediness problem twice today too. So I guess the double mocha is being extra effective.

Seagate seems to still be a go so far (still waiting for final confirm on background check).

Just confirmed interview next Thursday at 12:15pm at Apple. I will tell the temp job that I had a doctor’s appt schedule six weeks ago and they are hard to reschedule. Hopefully they will be okay. Distance between temp job and Apple is only about 20 minutes so I can be back in the office by 3:40 pm and work till 6pm or there abouts to make up for the time lost. The Apple HR said something about interviewing between 12:15 to 3:15 pm.
