I just got a 4.5 month old kitten yesterday. He’s very sweet and playful, but despite his show of energy, he doesn’t seem to be eating much. When I asked the lady at the humane society what to feed him, she said any kitten food. She wouldn’t even recommend a brand. I had a tabby for nearly 19 years who just ate Western Family dry food, so I figured I just get their kitten food, but Shadow doesn’t seem to like it like Mitsy did. I was feeding an adult stray for a while until the neighbor took her, so I had a few cans of wet food left and he’s liked that, and keeps asking for more. I figure I can go buy more of the same stuff but specially made for kittens, but how much should I give him per day? And should I try a different dry food, too? I’d like to leave out dry food for him if possible, since my afternoon/evening schedule changes and I don’t want him to have to depend on being fed wet food each night, too.

Also, he’s been getting very agitated when I and/or my husband eat(s). He thinks he just has to have some, too! I don’t want to make him ill, nor start a bad habit, but he gets so annoyed and keeps jumping on my lap and to the table. Is this because he’s hungry since he won’t eat his own food, or is he just feeling left out? Any recommendations on what I should feed him and how much would be great!

On a side note, my husband insists that Shadow not be allowed in the bedroom, but I worry about the poor kitty. Hubby wouldn’t let me sleep downstairs with the cat last night, despite his being so new to the environment, and I think he just hid behind the desk the whole night. Hubby has allergies, so I don’t blame him, but is there anything I can do to help Shadow? I don’t want him to be frightened when I’m not around. After last night he won’t leave my side.

Sorry so many questions! The only other kitten I’ve had was Mitsy when she was young and I was only 7 myself.

Wet food would be the best thing, it also helps cats shed less so people that are allergic to cats don’t have as hard of time being around them.

Western Family is very low quality. Grainfree/All Life Stage foods are typically the highest qualites examples are blue buffalo wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, EVO, Orijen, Natural Balance, and Taste of the Wild. Try those if you want to keep dry out.

The farm cats don’t shed barely anything and the are on the raw diet (meat, bones, liver, kidney). I think that would help a lot for someone with allergies if the cats didn’t shed!

I don’t know why they are so picky. I have a mom with 2 12week old girls, mom and one kitten eat their wet food and dry food all the time, but the other kitten doesn’t like the dry food and will not eat her wet food right away, I have to put her in front of the plate like 20 times before she stays and starts eating, which takes like half an hour to do, so in the morning it takes me so long before I can leave for work. And some times she won’t eat so I have to leave it there and hope she will eat it and not the mom.

Maybe she eats the dry food when I am not there but I have never seen her eat it.

I don’t know what to do about that either, they do no eat any people food at all.

Maybe you can feed him his food when you eat.

When you are not around you can leave toys for him to play with and the radio on so it doesn’t seem he is all alone.

Thanks, guys! I’ve been researching cat food and I think I’ve found some good brands to try, like the EVO and Natural Balance suggested, so hopefully he likes those. I’m going to continue to feed him canned food, too, since it looks like it’s so much better for him. My husband isn’t helping though by sharing some of his food with Shadow when I’m not looking! Shadow wouldn’t eat the bologna from Ryan’s sandwich though, which makes me wonder if Ryan should be eating it himself!

We have started feeding him his own food when we eat, which was a good idea, and seems to help.

The radio is a good idea, I’ll try that tonight. Ryan was afraid it would keep him up, but we’re finding that Shadow can sleep through just about anything, including having his claws clipped!
