Hey, I´ve signed up here, because I need help with a kitten as soon as possible, and this might be the place. We have cats living outside of the house, and one cat had baby kittens. She abandoned one of the kittens and took the other two to the new nest, which was about 20 feet away from the old one. We thought she might come back for him, but after almost 2 days, we took him in.
So, the cat hid the kittens in the garage in a box with old papers on the table. I´ve been bringing her food and water, but in general I left her alone. Yesterday however, one of the kittens managed to fall out of the box to the table (aprox. 10 inches below) and has been there since. The cat has enough room to get to him, but she just stays with the remaining kitten in the box and doesn´t do anything. I haven´t touched the kitten yet, because I´m not sure what´s the case about, but I don´t want the kitten to die. So, when should I interfere? I decided to wait a few more hours anyway, but still, I would like opinion from people, that have more experience with abandoned kittens than I do. So please, give me some advice 🙁

It’s time to intervene, NOW. Kittens have to be kept warm and fed and if they don’t, they die. That being said, kittens are tough and are survivors. You will need to bring them in to a nest of some sort with towels, and probably a heating pad on low under the towels and an area for them to crawl off if they become too warm. Some mom cats just freak out after giving birth and are merely kittens themselves and don’t know what to do to care for kittens. You will need bottles and KMR (kitten milk replacer, NOT Hartz) OR goat’s milk found in the milk section of the grocery store or the baking aisle in cans at Walmart or grocery store. It’s much cheaper than KMR and is lactose free and I hand reared my last kitten on it entirely. Just warm it some and use a syringe or a pet bottle to get a few drops into your kittens. You have to stimulate them yourself to pee and poop and there are many threads on here to help you with that. Keep us posted!

Anya, type in “messy beast” in the search tag, and many threads will pop up for you to look at how to hand rear kittens. Luckily you have found the best site on the internet for insuring your kittens will survive!

Anya, start off by looking at this thread:

Links for kitten-raising sites, eg Messybeast

and these youtube videos, they give you all the basics.

If you click on the pink tag, orphans, you will find loads of previous threads with good advice on bringing up abandoned kittens. But it is a hard thing to do, the majority of kittens do not do well without their mum 🙁

Nothing to worry about, I panicked too fast. The cat took the kitten back after an hour or so, and the kitten that I´ve took in is growing up fast and is such a delight to have in the house 🙂 Thank you for your help 🙂
