Hi, Mustafa, I can’t tell you how happy I am to see your update. I think you are a champion to have managed to do all this for your new little one, you are very special.
Okay, first things first, the glop. The truth is that any of these recipes will do but the website information I trust most in the world, especially when it comes to trying to handrear kittens with problems, is Sarah Hartwell from the Messybeast site. So you can’t do better than try the glop recipe she recommends, especially as it includes gelatin which includes all the amino acids that a kitten needs. Here is the recipe:
    “KITTEN GLOP

Kitten Glop is a suitable feed mixture for healthy kittens and is also good for lactating queens. Most recipes refer to American brand names which are not understood outside of the USA/Canada. I have converted these to generic terms and noted alternatives.

    Ingredients

    1 envelope unflavoured gelatine
water per gelatine package directions (approx 12 oz)
1 12 oz can whole evaporated milk (not skimmed) See notes
3 tablespoons plain yoghurt (not low fat)
3 teaspoons clear corn syrup See notes
    3 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 or 2 raw egg yolks (optional) See notes
    Notes

If you have canned goat’s milk available, use this instead as it reduces the likelihood of lactose intolerance problems. Sheep’s milk is even higher in fat but not generally available in cans.

Some recipes use 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt and omit the corn syrup entirely.

Clear corn syrup (e.g. “Karo” brand in the US) is a concentrated glucose solution. It contains 15% – 20% dextrose (glucose), a mixture of other types of sugar and may be flavoured with vanilla. Dark corn syrup is made with molasses and is more strongly flavoured. Glucose solution may be used instead.

Raw eggs can be a source of salmonella. Do not use any egg white in the mixture, it can prevent other nutrients from being digested.

Kitty vitamins and/or acidophilus are sometimes added. Only add vitamins if the diet is deficient in them – vitamins can be dangerous in too high quantities (hypervitaminosis) and vitamin imbalances affect development.

    Method

Boil the water and mix in gelatine powder. Add the other ingredients in the following order, mixing well after each addition: half of the canned milk, corn syrup (if used), mayonnaise + yoghurt, egg yolk (if used), remainder of the canned milk. Use either an egg beater or a blender set to low speed.

Serve the glop at room temperature or slightly warmed since the kittens will be used to warm milk. Warming the mixture makes it more pungent and therefore more appetising. Do not pour back unused portions into the stored mix as it may introduce contaminants.

Glop sets into a jelly when refrigerated. It can either be stored in the fridge in a covered container for up to 2 weeks or frozen into individual portions in ice cube trays and defrosted as needed. Freezing it is very convenient, but it must be properly thawed before serving as cold food will cause stomach upsets in young kittens.”

And here is her website link: http://messybeast.com/handrear.htm

As she keeps saying, she is not a vet, but her information has been invaluable to TDK members over the past few years.

BTW, if you feel happier using infant formula, make it up to DOUBLE STRENGTH. At human strength, it is not rich enough for kittens.

Now, as to her age. This is important both for her feeding and for her eyes. You estimated two-to-three weeks. Did the vet agree with you? These videos are very good (was it these you watched for the fleas?) and has one on estimating your kitten’s age.

A kitten’s eyes start to open at around 10 days old so if your kitten is younger than this, it is fine that her eyes are closed. However, if she is obviously older than 10 days and her eyes are closed, this could well be a sign of damage. It’s great that you’re going back to the vet so you can ask him about this. The antibiotics that he gave her should help with any eye problems but better safe than sorry. If she is four weeks or older, you can start trying to add some wet food into her formula/glop/diet, mix it into a gruel-like consistency, and see if she is able to take it. However, if she is only two to three weeks, she’s still too young to try her on solids.

It’s great that you’re dealing with the fleas as they are life-threatening to tiny kittens, they make them anaemic. You are doing a marvellous job all round. This little girl is very lucky to have been rescued by you. I think Isis is a lovely name — when I was a girl, I loved Egyptian mythology (I saw the Tutankhamun exhibition in London when I was there with my parents and it blew my mind!) and Isis was (of course) my favourite goddess. Bless you for being such a compassionate person, as KJ says. You will be an awesome dad one day.

that vid keeps making me want to kiss all the kittens. just saying.

I’ll stick to Isis and Infant milk. On Sunday, I’ll check again if Glop is better than infant milk. Maybe the vet didn’t think I am willing to put effort for a stray kitten, so he picked the easiest way for me. The vet said to use half the strength! So, I’ll consult another vet.
For now, I use Similac NeoSure for premature human infants, per his suggestion.

I estimated her age according to Wikihow:

    • On first day I found her, she had one eye half opened.
    • Her ears popped up.
    • She crawls, not walks, shakily.
    • Doesn’t react to sounds and doesn’t startle on sudden noises.
    • She has canines and incisors

Although always closing her eyes, she reacts to light when pointed to her eyes. The vet didn’t say anything regarding her age.

Last night I didn’t interrupt her sleep to feed her. She woke up, started to meow and happily accepted the syringe but didn’t like the hard plastic so she just refused it again. Thus, I feed her little amounts every 2 hours by gently forcing her mouth open a little to drip milk on her tongue and allow her to swallow. She gets about 3 – 4 ml each time then closes her mouth without swallowing letting the milk drip from her mouth.

She’s a little dehydrated again, her urination is darker than that in the video and she urinates on her own now. Looks like I didn’t clean her good enough from fleas as I found some more this morning. So far she didn’t defecate.

@Nirmal: Ajeeb is an Arabic word too. It means Wondrous and bizarre. Thanks for the suggestion.

    @KJ: It is OK 🙂

@jcat: Thanks again. This video was one of the first I watched, very helpful and comprehensive.
If you like, Egypt is one of the easiest countries to visit. I suggest waiting a little for things to settle down and it is more secure, if you really decide to visit. Plan for a 2 week visit to see the major temples at least. It is best to visit Egypt in winter if you are not accustomed to hot weather.

@mustafa – yes a lot of hindi and punjabi words have been borrowed from arabic and farsi. i’d love to see egypt myself. i have egyptian friends here in new york city. its sounds like you’re doing a good job!

    Hi guys,
Just wanted to thank you all for your help and guidance. Isis is in much better shape though still a little bit skinny.
    .
Her sight is getting better, she doesn’t react to sounds much though (only very load will startle her), started eating like a champ (about 12 cm3 per meal, 6 meals per day) and her motor skills getting much better. The vet suggested Clear shampoo for men to get rid of fleas and it worked. However, do not try this on your kitten. The vet only suggested this as it was an emergency.
    .
Since yesterday, she grew restless in her nest and meows til someone get’s her out of it. Once out, she roams the whole place to find the warm back side of the refrigerator, sleeps there and meows from time to time at it. Guess she thinks the warm compressor is her mother.
    .
Every one at the office is taking part in caring for her around the clock.

hello mustafa ji! such great news! ur very welcome! i would substitue baby shampoo for the men’s shampoo, it’s milder. keep trying to feed her with a bottle, and you can play soft music for her. i will confess that my cats always did enjoy indian and arabic music. they’d even watch bollywood movies with me ;P so you can try something sweet and pleasant for her. it will relax her. if that doesn’t, you can try some other soft sounds.

Terrific news Mustafa! Nice that you have a whole gang helping out. When you get a moment perhaps you can post some pics of little Isis, and maybe she can be the featured Daily Kitten. That is of course if posing doesn’t stress her out.

Finally I understood her meows! She wants to be weaned 🙂
Today, she’ll take only a few sips and refuse the bottle. So, I introduced some solid food. Since then, she’s been eating and refuses to let anyone take her away from her plate.
For drinking, I guess she needs time and practice. Every time she tries to drink, she dips her nose, sneeze and try again. Is there anything I can do about this? I already gave her very shallow plates with few drops of water.
    .
@Nirmal: Men’s shampoo is the exception not the standard. I used to kill the fleas only. For the music, I’ll find something with a slow tempo for her.
    .
@KJ: I’ll do so once her head injury is healed. She lost a considerable chunk of her scalp skin. Long story made short: she had a huge pus pocket spreading from her eyes up to her ears. It applied pressure that she closed her again, if you remember our earlier conversations.
    .

    @jcat
    : You’re most welcome.
    .
I have several of my friends working in tourism, thus at any time any of you decides to visit Egypt, planning your trip at reduced costs will be piece of cake.

    #807174

that’s wonderful! the better you learn to communicate with your cat, the better your relationship will be.

hmmm about the shampoo i understand, just need to be careful because cat skin is much more fragile and they are much more susceiptble to harm when chemicals are ingested into their system by whatever means.
