Wondering if anyone can help. My daughter lives in Portland, OR. Someone got into her apartment, no forced entry, while she was at work. Her cat, Simba, was tormented. A week later, the intruder returned, but this time killed Simba. She went to the shelter and adopted 2 kitties, Callie and Jasper. Four days later, she came home after work and to find Callie attacked and killed and Jasper injured and in pain. A police report has been filed. Does anyone know if similar things have been happening in and around Portland? Thank you for any information.

OMG JROC…..how horrifying!! You might ask our other TDK member Kittenwhisperer. If I recall she lives in Portland & she’s a judge as well.

I’m so very sorry your sister had this happen. Whoever did this to her cats must be very evil. I’d love to get ahold of the monster. They wouldn’t know what hit them.

I am not near Portland but it is obvious that the intruder is an insider. Management and Maintenance would have master keys or access to copies of the actual lock.

Your Daughter needs to move. Anyone who would attack the cats in her absence would also attack her.

I agree with Ailur; is there someone (a worker) in the building she’s had a conflict with? She should definitely start looking for a new place to live. How awful for the poor cats, and for your daughter.

OMGosh, how terrible for your daughter and her cats. She should acess her acquaintances behavior just in case it is someone she may know for as no forced entry. But still think it is time to relocate!

JROC….I’m so sorry. I meant daughter in my above post…not sister. I think Ailur’s advice is spot on.Your daughter should move.

JROC I am from the Portland area, Vancouver WA (right across the river from Portland) and I have not heard anything like this happening at all. I checked the local news stations and I see no mention of anyone else having had this happen. I agree that this sounds like someone who has access to her apartment. She might also want to contact one of the newstations so others can know what is happening. Whoever did this needs to be locked up!

I checked again at the local news and this is all I could find.

Not sure if this will help, besides what was said above. Such a sad and gutwrenching experience for your daughter. There are many wireless alarm systems for apartment dwellers, so when you move it can be taken with you. Not sure if the apt management needs to approve, as they need access to the apts. from time to time.

That is horrible, so sorry that your daughter is going thru this and very sad for the kitties.

It does sound like someone has access to the apartment and that should be addressed immediately to both the apartment management and the police (figure this has already been done). If whomever is doing this now, what’s to stop them from hurting your daughter which is a scary, scary thought. Maybe she should contact the news stations in the area too.

OMG, I can’t even begin to imagine how terrifying this is. Has she contacted the local ASPCA or Humane Association and, as JD suggests, local newspaper and/or radio station to warn them that a maniac is about? What about an email campaign as well?

But most of all I agree with Ailuromaniac and Kilroy. Your daughter is not safe there. She needs to move. Has she an ex boyfriend or partner who could still have a key and be doing this? Abusing animals is a very common way of domestic abuse and this is desperately worrying. Please encourage her to get out of there — stay with friends, if necessary. In the meantime, can she change all her locks?

She needs to get out NOW, even if she only goes to a hotel or shelter. This really sounds like someone who knows and hates her. Anyone at work could have lifted her keys and copied them. Someone who works at the apartment could be doing it. If she’s broken up with anyone recently, or even turned someone down who asked for a date, they could be taking the rejection poorly.

She might be able to convince the apartment management to let her change the locks and not be on the master key, but if it’s a maintenance man at the apartment, that won’t help.

Did the police dust for prints, take pictures, act concerned at all? If not, she needs to make a pest of herself so she gets the attention she needs.

I agree, CBM, it really sounds like domestic abuse/stalking to me. Has she had anything else happen — letters, phone calls, people hassling her — that could be connected?

You all are so wonderful with your thoughts and concerns and I thank you all very much. She and her kitty, Jasper, are at a friend’s house and she is looking for a new apartment. Police took pictures but did not check for finger prints. Police called manager but had to leave a message and have not heard back. I will keep you posted. Thank you all again.

JROC, I’m saying a prayer for your daughter right now. I pray that she remains safe, that her remaining kitty Jasper heals, and that your daughter immediately finds a new place to live and goes back to her current place to pack and leave ONLY with additional people along to ensure her safety while she moves out her belongings. I pray further that the police take this seriously, investigate vigorously and find whomever is responsible and put he/she/them behind bars for a long time. My sincere sympathy to your daugher for her appalling loss of beloved pets.
