I have two kittens, Gizmo and Shadow, Shadow is putting on weight and is as lively as anything, Gizmo is very quiet and sleeps a lot. The only thing I can think of is Gizmo drinking some off milk. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Hi, Becki, we’d need a lot more information to help. First of all, how old are they and what are you feeding them? They might just have different temperaments — all kitties do. Kittens can also get quite sleepy if they’re going through a growth spurt (they grow when they’re asleep) or when they’ve had their shots. Has Gizmo always been quiet and sleepy or is this a recent change in behaviour? Is Gizmo putting on weight? Is Gizmo off his food? Is he sleepy or is he lethargic so that even when you wake him/her up, s/he doesn’t seem interested in what is going on around him or her? Or is he still curious and alert when he’s awake? Is he still playing?
If he’s lethargic, kind of ‘flat’ and uninterested in things going on around him, is off his food and is not putting on weight, then you need to take him to the vet now. You should also take him to the vet if he is losing weight and doesn’t seem interested in food.
If he has just started being quiet and sleepy, but is still eating well, then just keep an eye on him and be ready to take him to the vet for a check-up if he stops eating. But if he is eating and not putting on at least a little weight week by week, then you should also keep an eye on him and be ready to take him to the vet.

What kind of milk? Kittens (and cats) should not be given cow’s milk – they can’t digest it.

Now giving my boys a closer look, I think it might be fleas or mites, I can see these little brown things running around, I gave both of them a bath last night, they didn’t budge, so I had another go with a wet cloth, I thought I got them all, but I can still see a couple on Gizmo, we’ve cleaned the whole house, washed everything from matts to bedding, and I’ve put some flea stuff on them, which I’m going out to buy some more of. I’m still worried about Gizmo, will he bounce back once or if I can get these things off him? Or should I take him to a vet?

How old is he? If they’re under 8 weeks, I wouldn’t give them any over-the-counter flea stuff, it could be harmful. This set of videos on bringing up abandoned kittens has a video on fleas, it’s the sixth video clip.

If a flea bath and combing doesn’t help then yes, take him to a vet for a treatment such as Revolution or Frontline. Fleas can cause anaemia in very little kittens.

They were born August/September, there abouts or maybe July, we got them at the beginning of October or when they were eight weeks old, I’ve bought some Bob Martin kitten flea spot on treatment and house spray, we also have two flea collars too, Gizmo is a bit more perky and active, still sleeping but he’s eating a bit more.

Flea collars are not great, especially if you’re using a skin treatment as well, I would take them off and put one in the vacuum cleaner bag, that way you kill any fleas you vacuum up but don’t hurt the kittens. I do not know about Bob Martin but I would strongly recommend only using Frontline, Advantage or Revolution, which I think you need to get from a vet in the US. You want to be careful to use the best treatment, especially for a very young kitten.
