I wish my cat would stop bringing in dead animals!

My cat, Pookie, well he brings in dead animals like lizards, dragonflies, and all kinds of other stuff does anyone know how I can stop that? I don’t think it’s possible to put a stop to this!!!!!

Hi, carlyqtie. Weldome to the Daily Kitten. Your cat is following his/her natural hunting instinct by catching little creatures. Cats frequently present their prizes to their people as gifts. My cats are completely indoor cats, so I don’t get these gifts but they do bring me toys (sometimes in the middle of the night. LOL)

I live in an antique house and get the occasional mouse. Tommy is an excellent mousetrap and is so pleased and proud to share his prey. It is the highest complement for a preditor to share his meal with you. It means you are the Alpha of his pride and he is being submissive.

We all know it is just a facade the kitty rules the roost. But it is a nice gesture albeit one we humans have difficulty appreciating.

Hi, Carlyqtie! As far as Pookie goes, well, I’m not sure this is behavior you can entirely correct. He is obviously proud of what he’s doing, and he’s just doing what a cat does. If you want to discourage this behavior, don’t make a big fuss when he brings you prey; treat it as neutrally as possible.

There is a person who used a computer and profile recognition software to control the cat door. It’s called the Flo Control project. Believe it or not, it works!

My boys used to bring things in when they were young hunters. Biggest problem was, the “outside toys” weren’t always dead! I’ve had live birds, snakes, mice etc. in the house. Rodents are fairly easy to trap and remove, birds are a challenge, and thankfully I haven’t had to deal too much with snakes because I have no idea how to handle them. The rule is, outside toys outside, inside toys inside. However, as we all know, cats know no rules!

AZDeb, one of my cats does give massages. She kneads my husband’s shoulder, arm and upper chest every morning and evening. He feels neglected if she misses a session! 🙂

Maverick brings me every tree roach he sees – dead or alive (Thank God he only sees a couple a year). Though they are mostly dead by the time he gets through pulling off their legs and wings. lol

My old boy Boomer found a mouse family when we moved to our new house, we live in a rural area, and I found no less than 10 tail ends of mice. It was disgusting, but I gave him a big hug and thanked him. He was so excited, I’m just glad he left them outside on the porch.

One of my father’s cats used to bring squirrels to him on the front porch. My father, who undersood the behavior, used to thank, praise, and pet the kitty, then discreetly dispose of the “meal” after the provider had left.

My old girl Pepper used to bring only parts…I don’t think she wanted to share everything..but she ceased doing it in her mid twenties.(they could probably out run her then)..but she live in harmony in the house with her gerbil companions. She used to wash and mother them. I just took the daily catch and quietly disposed of it..after all she was a proud woman.

Listen, cats bring in dead animals as a gift!

They take to time to hunt for them, and bring them in to show their loyalty to you hun! don’t scold him for it! love on him! He is just trying to give you a gift hun.
