About two weeks ago my wife and I got a new kitten to add to our household with our one year old cat and 8 year old dog. Within that week, she worked her way into our hearts with her loud, infectious purrs and constant need for cuddles. She at first didn’t appreciate the way the dog wanted to get to know her, but I eventually saw him give her one long lick from the top of her head to the base of her tail. This elicited one of her loud purrs.
Later that day, I was heading down the stairs. She decided to bound forward from behind me, and as I took the next step, I felt a crack under my heel. Not even a single mew, and she was spasming. From what I saw, I knew she was dying, and I went into hysterics as I held her.
I know I only had her for a week, but I miss her. I feel terrible for what I have done, but I know that it’s not really anyone’s fault. We got her from a woman who was looking to get her into a good home, and I feel like I failed. I just want to find a way to make things right.

I am so sorry. Kittens and stairs are the worst combination for an invitation to disaster. I know your heart is as broken as the little body you held in its final moments. Be at peace. The little one knows you meant no harm. You fulfilled your promise to give her a good home. Your post is brimming with the love with which she was showered in her brief life. She waits at the meadow to tell you herself when the time has fulfilled itself.

Oh Eric, I am so very sorry. This is heartbreaking. I have lost cats/kittens to accidents like this and it haunts you. Please understand that your kitten knew only love. She did not suffer. She woke up in the Meadow, where she will wait for you. When the time is right, your little darling will send another kitten or cat for you to love. Your heart may not be ready yet, but when it is you will know that it was sent from above. I do believe this; have seen it over and over in my own life and in the lives of others. Please don’t punish yourself. In time your one horrible memory will be replaced with the goodness that she brought. The time will be right again.

Hi Eric – I am so sorry. It was a tragic accident. She obviously will live on in your heart, as it took her only a week to get in there. This may seem like just words, but they have true meaning.
    You didn’t fail.

Thanks for your support. I was just hoping that her forever home meant a longer forever. My other pets seem to know when I’m down. I know it’s soon, but I want to look for another kitten. Too many of them don’t get good homes, and there is a spot for one right now.

Yes, that’s not too much to ask. 🙁
This also seems like just words, but I’ve seen for myself it’s true: Sometimes things really do happen for a reason. The fact that you feel the need to adopt another kitten means you should do just that. Remember there is no such thing as replacing a kitty. Someone out there needs you.

Go for it Eric! Your little kitten wants other to know the love that she knew in such a short time. It won’t be a replacement, or a substitute, but a new soul to love.
