Hello, I have an 8 week old kitten, he is so cute. However, i have no clue what to do with him. Please educate me about all the kitty basics.

    Hi Bana

Brandilee pretty much covered it, another thing is take it to the vet as she/he may have worms(Most kittens do) they also will do a few tests to make sure your baby is Ok. Get a spray water bottle if your baby is doing something you don’t want it to do just give a little spray, it will learn quickly. also go buy a scratching post or a log to sharpen his or her nails(This is an instinct to do this) you want to start clipping the nails now look at the nail towards the foot you will see a color change in the nail that is the quick and don’t clip up that far if your nervous about this petco will do it and also your vet!

Now I have some questions for you?

Is your kitten a boy or girl?

    what’s the new babies name?

    Best of luck

    peace

    Dorie

PS click on my name and see my babies! Chucky’s the oldest(2 1/2 years) and Tess and Tonka are just 3months old.(actually the dog is the oldest she’s almost 8)

Like any baby, you provide food, drink, shelter, sanitation, medical attention, education, discipline, patience and LOVE.

Everyone has all of the above covered in their lists.

I just want to add a tip. To toilet train your angel, feed baby and remove him immediately to the well scooped litter box. Demonstrate digging in the material and praise kitty. Praise more if the desired activity is acomplished.

It will not take long for a kitty’s natural instinct to be fastidious to take over.

Thanx guys that was really helpful. My kitty is a boy and i named him pookie 🙂 he is soooooo active. How often do i need to clip his nails? I want to post a pic of him but i am not sure how yet 😛

It sounds like you’ve decided to keep Pookie, Bana. If you take good care of your kitty friend, he’ll bring you many years of joy.

I clip my cats’ claws every week to ten days. Just like Dorie said in her post, be very careful not to clip too much or you will cause it to bleed. Here is a link with a picture that shows you the part to clip: http://www.pawsonline.net/clipping_claws.htm

There are lots of books on caring for cats and kittens. Look for them at your public library or at any pet store.

    Have fun with Pookie!

Pookie sounds wonderful! I clip claws about every 2 weeks, or whenever the cat’s sitting on my lap and the clippers happen to be within reach. Pookie will think you’re a little strange at first for wanting to handle his paws, but give him lots of love, attention, petting, happy sounds and maybe a treat when he lets you handle his paws, and soon he’ll be all good with it.

And when you play with Pookie, don’t use your hands as playthings. Use a stick, a string, a stuffed animal, crumpled up piece of paper, whatever… but your hands are for petting only, and picking up & putting down, not playing. This will go a long way toward keeping you and anyone else from being inadvertently scratched.

He sounds like a real charmer! He will want to play a lot, and get lots of attention… you’re having to make up for all his littermates and his mama! Good luck!

Yeah I decided to keep him, the minute someone came to take him i couldnt let go anymore. I have another question, is it normal for a kitty to bite my jeans or should i stop him?

How old is Pookie? Is it biting or sucking? If biting yes stop! Sucking then might be he is showing he consider you as momma, but would still wanna stop it!

Chewing could be teething. Give baby an acceptable chewtoy and destract him from your jeans. Now is also a good time to introduce the toothbrush.

He is a sweethart! Love the harness. Pink is in for our guys this year.

Bana, he could be teething, but if that’s the case, you just need to direct his chewing to an acceptable object. There are some behaviors you just can’t stop (like chewing, clawing, etc.). In nearly all cases the best action to take is to interrupt the behavior and direct the cat toward an acceptable substitute.

Oh, and don’t let your kitten do things that you wouldn’t want him to do as an adult! I see this all the time, with things like clawing and nipping at hands. This may seem cute when he’s little and such actions are mostly harmless, but it would be a LOT less cute as an adult. Better not to have him learn to do it in the first place.

And make sure to give them plenty of nutrition….trickier than it sound. I fed my george when he was a kitten, and he wasn’t quite getting all he needed, so i sat and hand milked him with a bottle (milk, lil molasses, and a bit of cane sugar). He’s bonded with me, and is quite healthy 5 yrs later!

I hate to say it but my kittens are training me faster than I can catch up with all their antics…lol..my husband speaks cat language better than I But slow but sure I’m making progress. When I catch a kitty going somewhere or doing something I want to discourage I find that they respond very quickly when I just clap my hands together loudly. (Just one clap) Now..they seem to not only know its a no-no but they take it a step further by turning tail and escorting themselves out the door without even being asked..lol..

I woke up this morning and found a good amount of clear white liquid on the floor, i am guessing it came out of my kitty. What could that be?

Have you been giving your kitten milk Bana? It might be too rich for her, and she may have thrown it back up again. Cows milk is not ideal for cats, you can buy special cat & kitten milk from pet stores. Otherwise, water is the bext thing for them, especially if you’re feeding them a dry diet.

Bana, do you have any houseplants, cleaners, or possible toxins within reach that Pookie might have gotten into? Many houseplants are poisonous to cats, along with many cleaners, etc. If so, try to identify what the substance was.

Otherwise, just keep a close eye on Pookie and see if he’s behaving normally, in terms of playing, sleeping, eating & drinking. If he seems to be fine, just keep an eye on him. If any of those habits deteriorate, or if he starts showing any signs of injury or illness, you’ll want to get him to a vet pronto.

No people food for right now, either, nor treats. Monitor what he eats & drinks carefully.
