Well, she is fine in my opinion she eats every 3 to 4 hours and I have estimulated her bowel she pees and poos normal. Yesterday I saw a little of blood coming out of her anus what can it be? I am not sure if it was blood but should I worry? Another problem I am having is that when she came home she did not cry at night and she was easy to take to sleep now she cries a lot and cries until she falls asleep I do not know what it is please help thanx

    Hi Marta,

Welcome to TDK. It’s possible she has parasites. This is common in outdoor moms and is transmitted to her kits. I recommend get a poo sample and have a vet look at it. It could be this is the cause of her cries. In the meantime, snuggle her and gently massage her.

Let us know how she’s doing.

http://www.safehavenforcats.com/newborn.htm and the http://www.messybeast.com site about kittens are good places to start in caring for kittens. It’s hard work, but the best place to start is with your vet since you saw blood in the stool. The vet can give you meds to kill worms and other parasites that could be the cause of the problem. Most kittens have them. You don’t say how old your kitten is, but in the web sites I gave you it should help you with what they should be eating at various ages.

Hello again thanks for ur replies I am so afraid that she is sick I can even sleep because of it. I called the vet and I explain the situation but it is so expensive to take her to the vet they told me 79 dollars plus taxes I live in Toronto and the vet is really expensive I do not have money to take her I could talk to my parents but they will tell me to get rid of her since I am a college studen with no kids they think she is a bit of a distraction.

I’m sorry for what you are going through with your kitty Marta. I live in the next province over as Montreal. Wondering if there is a veterinary college or vet tech college in Toronto where they might treat your kitty for a reduced fee. Or if you could contact some local shelters who work with a vet who might give you a lower price or let you pay the fee over time. Or could your parents loan you the money and you could pay them back? There is a vet college in Guelph, but that’s pretty far from where you live. Wish that I could be of more help. Really hope that there is some workable solution for you and kitty.

Hello again guys, just to update you with my situation I have not found a vet that will charge me less than $70 and when I explain my situation with them they say I should surrender my kitten to a shelter I feel so bad because I want to keep it she is like my baby now, but I don’t really know if she is sick or is just my imagination. Yesterday she acted normal she did not defecate but she is peeing good my only problem is that every time I wake her up to give feed her she does not go to sleep right away she spends about half an hour crying and moving around does this mean she is sick? Thanks for your replies I am very new at this but it is a wonderful experience I just wish she is okay!

Marta, now that she is 2 weeks old, she will be moving around more and more. She probably loves being petted, snuggled, and kissed. Hopefully, you checked out the websites I posted, it would relieve your mind a bit if you do. It may not be critical at this point if you don’t get her to the vet, but eventually she WILL need to go. She will need her first shots to keep her healthy. There is no way I can tell you whether she is sick. I am not a vet but have hand reared newborn kittens for years. There will also be the issue of getting her spayed so that she can’t have unwanted kittens. That can be costly too. Let us know how she is doing.

Thanks Kittyzee I feel better now I think I am overreacting because I have never raised a kitten before I have not even owned one. I know she has to go to the vet but right now I am trying to save to take her for her shots and all that stuff. Thanks for replying 🙂

Hi, Marta, first of all this is a great set of videos to help you take care of your new baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctfhMJUdxZA

It is very hard indeed to raise an orphaned kitten without their mum, as the odds are heavily against them, but with some luck and a lot of love and TLC, it can be done. The main thing, however, is how strong kitten is and how healthy mum was and this is something we have no control over. Little kittens are also very difficult for vets to treat unless there is a specific problem — all they can really do is give them antibiotics which, as these can cause diarrhoea which is life-threatening in kittens, they like to avoid if possible. So first of all, stop worrying about not being able to afford the vet yet, there is not much that the vet could do. I think the little bit of blood you saw is probably indeed worms, as Kittyzee thinks, and at two weeks, I would think your vet might be reluctant to worm her anyway as she is so tiny. I would think four weeks would be more likely (but I may well be wrong, it’s a long while since I cared for tiny kittens). The best thing is to worm mum during pregnancy but of course with strays and orphans this is not possible. So for the moment, know that taking her to the vet is probably not the most important thing and neither is the worming, the most important thing is that she is gaining weight. What are you feeding her? None of us would recommend Hertz. KMR is the best or goats’ milk, if you can get it (in the baking aisle or chiller at Walmart or similar shops). As for the crying, she is lonely, normally she would be huddled up all day with her other siblings and her mum. Things that can help — a small nest with a stuffed toy for her to cuddle up to, an unwashed sweater of yours in the nest so that it smells comfortingly of you, some people recommend a ticking clock wrapped in a towel to imitate mum’s heartbeat, a heating pad or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel (with room in the nest so she can crawl off if she gets too hot, that’s very important as kittens this young can’t regulate their own temperature very well), and as much time spent next to your skin as possible — if you could rig up some kind of safe sling to keep her next to you, that would help.
If there’s anything else we can help with, just let us know. The first vet visit usually takes place at around 8 weeks unless there is a specific problem that needs seeing to.

Marta, the KMR always seems to constipate kittens, you are doing the best thing by diluting her formula with water, but you can also try sieving the mixture before you give it to her, adding a drop or two of vegetable oil, using the canned liquid KMR (though that costs more) or using goats’ milk, if you can find it. At such a young age and only on milk, she will not be pooping a lot and you may only see a smear on her bedding etc (TMI, I know). I have added the ‘constipation’ tag so you can read more about it but bear in mind that at two weeks old, she is very young and fragile, so drastic solutions best avoided. Most shelters do not have the number of volunteers needed to raise bottle babies so I would think she is probably better off with you than with the shelter — unless they have another mum cat with a litter of about the same age who would accept her as her own kitten. That is the best way to bring up orphaned kittens, with another cat mum who can feed her, but it is not always possible.

Hello girls this is me again. My kitten has not poop since Monday, she was eating well but today she does not want to eat. I tried to stimulate her to poop but nothing I have even massage her tummy and everything but nothing i have added olive oil to her formula and a little more of water. I am worried i do not know what else to do 🙁

Marta, it is not a good sign that she doesn’t want to eat. Kittens this small can crash very quickly when they do not eat as their blood sugar level crashes and this is life threatening. Smear some honey on her gums and mouth so that she can lick it off. Get some Nutrigel as soon as you can and smear this on the same way. Stop diluting her food so much and see if the honey makes her want to eat. You may have to force feed her if she keeps on refusing to eat. And since you are sure that she has still not pooped since Monday, I am sorry but I do think a vet visit now would be the best thing — they can give her an enema and show you how to use the triangle method. (If you check on youtube, there is a video on how to do it called, We squeeze the poop out of Brutus’.) And look for goats’ milk at Walmart.

    Hello guys,
Just to update you guys about my lil girl she is growing guys she is walking better and her ears are bigger also her eyes. Well, since she seemed to lost her appetite I start giving her formula more often after that day she start eating normal again she eats a lot now. She is not constipated anymore I used a glycerin baby suppository to help her go and it worked so well. She sleeps a lot and also cries for her mommy. I have only one concern her tummy seems bigger now she is eating more now but I am scared something is wrong? Her stomach is a little firm not so hard but not so soft either should I worried? Or she just have worms inside? I am planning to take to the vet next week maybe just for a check up. Can some one tell me where are her vaccinates due? She is so lovely and I love my lil kitty…

Glad everything is working out. As far as I know yes she probably has worms. The vet will give her a dewormer which I believe my kitten got 3 times just to ensure there were no worms. I found that the vets office is really expensive but when I checked Petsmart’s vet Banfield they have an awesome kitten program that covers 2 full exams free exams otherwise, covers all tests and vaccines and covers getting spayed or neutered. you also get a discount on anyone’s services you might need. I believe it was $350 for the year and they broke it down into affordable payments. I think the initial fee was $36 plus a $40 starting fee. Been totally worth it and you can renew each year. They just set up an automatic draft from your account. Been the best thing for us. My kitten is 1 and we had issues with her limping at Christmas and when I had to take her in to be seen I didn’t have to pay the $50 just to see the dr. Totally worth it. I don’t know if Banfield in Canada but if u can do it it helps with the cost and you know your baby has the best care. We love our vet and recommend her often. Good luck to you

Marta, she is too young to wean from the bottle at 5 weeks. Usually you don’t start weaning until 8 weeks, and some like taking it longer, some not. Try mixing wet food in with the milk and cutting the end of the nipple off and she will get the taste of the wet food in with the milk. If you would take a look at the sites I posted, it gives all kinds of good advice on the feeding and weaning process.
