    Hi, my new kitten has hydrocephalus, I was wondering if anyone has had a case where it’s been mild and the kitten has lived a full and happy life with no complications? My husband and I have fallen in love with this itty bitty and want to give it a good and pain-free life, so I’m looking for the best possible venue. Also, any advice in treating abandonment issues in kittens? He was abandoned and we can’t leave him alone for more than a couple minutes without him whining and crying, but it’s impossible for one or both of us to be at home all the time.

    Hi Alex_Kitten, welcome to TDK! I’m afraid I know nothing about hydrocephalus in cats, but as a human with hydro, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for taking care of the little one.

    I did find some good information here: http://www.pethydro.org/home.html

    Please keep checking back, we have people here who know about all sorts of conditions and I’m sure they’ll be able to help you.

    Thanks for the info, I’m looking into it but it all seems negative…but my husband and I are going to try and give him the best life regardless of how long he has (He was found on the street, abandoned, so anything is better than what he was going to have)

    Is that the little one in your avatar? How adorable! Does he have a name yet?

    All you can do is love him and keep him safe, for as long as he’s with you. That’s all we can do for any of our furry loved ones.

    Yes, his name is Yoda, because his ears are an exact match for Yoda’s. This is true, and that’s exactly what we’re going to try and do. We’re also looking into getting another kitten/young cat to keep him company when we can’t be home in case he unexpectedly passes away when we’re not home. That way, he’s never alone, and the other cat would also help us with any stress from passing/surgery or problems with Yoda.

    my advice to you would be to get some expert advice. Find a veterinary teaching hospital, and have him evaluated there. I have heard of kittens growing out of this in a few weeks’ time, but mostly the scenario is negative, most vets will advise to have him euthanised. I dont know if it will help him to have a shunt inserted in his skull/spine to help drain fluid away from his head, but its a possibility you should discuss with a very competent vet. Good luck!

    I can’t help with that, but I can keep this bumped up until someone sees it who can help.

    More smooches for baby Yoda and thank you for taking care of a special needs kitty. Perhaps for the abandonment issues you can get him a kitty companion,maybe an adult kitty so he doesn’t have to deal with the kitty mock battles and ambushes that are a part of their growing up. See if you can get a female who will hopefully mother him. You would really need to know about the kitty you’re adopting though to avoid making the situation worse by having a kitty pick on him over his disability. Maybe one who has just been spade after having kittens.

    Here’s more info on Hydrocephalus;

    Some animals with congenital hydrocephalus have an immediate response to medical or surgical treatment and can be stable over a long period of time.

    I would check around to find a vet who is willing to treat Yoda with either meds or the shunt. It seems like from the info the quicker something is done about it the better.

    AK, I have no experience with either of these, really. I’ve cared for hoomin babies with hydrocephalus but have never encountered a kitty with the condition.

    I just had to tell you that Yoda is too adorable – no wonder you have fallen in love with him. I wonder if a stuffed toy about the size of a mama kitty would help?

    BC, that’s a great new avatar!

    you can go up on the internet and buy a “mommy bear”. its really for human babies, but it provides that all-important hearbeat and its warm too. maybe that’s all he needs…
