I’ve had 7 cats before in my life, one of whom I raised as a kitten from four weeks old. Now we have two new kittens we rescued two weeks ago from a stray/feral cat outdoors who was killed by a raccoon when they were about 3-4 weeks old as well (so they’re 6-7 weeks old now). Yesterday in the early evening, one of our kittens got really lethargic and wouldn’t play with his sister even though she was zooming around as usual and trying to climb all over him and stuff. He would just stay in the bed and look at us with those tired eyes you get when you’re sick. He’d still eat, but wasn’t interested in running around. This morning I noticed his breathing was rapid, so I decided to take him to the vet. His fever was 105, poor thing, and the vet said he had a sore throat. He has no coughing, sneezing, or runny nose, and neither has he been vomiting. The vet mentioned that he hoped it wasn’t feline distemper, since that kills most kittens rapidly. He gave our little one a shot of antibiotics and fever reducer (and who knows what else) and gave us meds of the same to give him every 12 hours. He said that if he refused to eat or drink, or looked even worse tomorrow, to bring him back in right away.

The vet recommended that we separate the two siblings to keep an eye on whether he’s eating, drinking, vomiting, gets diarrhea, etc. I have him in a playpen, and now he’s running around and playing, chasing his tail, trying to get out repeatedly, etc., so I hope that means he’s not on death row (yet). He also did eat. With that being said, does anybody have experience with handling feline distemper in kittens? Or FIP? Or anything that can cause a fever and sore throat? The next step is blood tests, obviously, but I only had enough money in my pocket today for the exam and meds. Do these symptoms sound like distemper or anything else? I know I can’t get an official diagnosis here, but I know that since so many of you are experienced with kittens I’d like to see what your experiences have been.

Above is a link to an article about feline distemper. While I haven’t actually had any experience with FIP, I have had experience with the distemper, but in older cats. I’m hoping that the vets’ diagnosis is wrong in this case, because it could be many other things too. It’s sort of like parvo in puppies and dogs, they CAN recover, but it’s an ugly disease passed easily from animal to animal and a lot of those exposed cannot recover. It sounds good that your kitten is doing so well, and could be you have beat this nasty virus or it is something else entirely. Keeping them apart for now is for the safety of all the other cats in the house, and make sure you keep yourself sanitized to keep from transporting it to the rest of your crew.

You are on the right track by taking him to the vet, and once he has been given the all clear, get him vaccinated. Which, thanks to you, reminds me that I need to call the vet to get my kitten (same age as yours) to the vet and do the very same thing..thanks!

He was very playful last night (he kept escaping from the playpen and running around the house, making me chase him-little stinker!), and he seemed pretty bright-eyed when I kept checking on him in the night, so I figured he was feeling better from the fever reducer and antibiotic the vet gave him. But then I realized that both he and his sister had diarrhea. So, I took them into the vet again and he gave them Albon and an anti-diarrheal. He couldn’t find anything in their rectal swabs, but I’ll submit a stool sample soon. His temperature was normal, and so was his sister’s, so that’s good. However, they both have bloated bellies and have had that since we got them, so we suspect worms as well. We won’t know for sure until the sample is submitted, of course. I asked him if it could still be distemper, since they keep running around and playing and wrestling as usual. He said no, because if they did I’d have been carrying them in there and they certainly wouldn’t be trying to play.

I’m relieved! I’m hoping it’s just a standard worm infection, and if there’s a secondary bacterial infection, I hope it’s an easy one to treat!

Oh that’s such good news! Yes, if they had distemper, they would not be running, jumping and playing with that wild-eyed kitten expression they are so famous for! Hoping it’s just worms because they are easily treated!
