I just bought my first house in June. I have some nice neighbors(I even have a crazy cat lady–which means for once its not me). Well I had done some improvment by planting some juniper bushes around my front porch. Well the other day my neighbor decided to be helpfull, since I am a single woman, and mowed both my front and back lawns. Which is great, both yards are rather big, however he mowed over my bushes and even pulled one of the bushes out. I am kinda pissed about that, but I am not sue what to do about it. To hire someone to do the lawns will cost more than $70, and I bought the bushes small so they cost about $6 each. Any Ideas???

he might have thought they were ‘weeds’ or just errant bushes and not juniper(s), I would ask him

Replant them, but this time put something around them so they are more visible and protected. Stakes are good, so is any cheap short wire fencing. A cheap alternative is to cut the bottom and top of a milk carton or 2L soda bottle. Split it down the back and put that around the base of what ever you plant. These are things I have to do to prevent my husband from mowing over everything I plant as well.

Also, just mention to him you just planted them and tried to mark them so he can see them, maybe even show him where they are. It was probably an honest mistake on his part.

This reminds me of one of my daughters. She watched me plant some flowers

one year and the next year when I was weeding, she pulled them all out. Bless her heart! We still laugh over that.

I think MerD’s advice is excellent — to replant your junipers, since they are inexpensive, and mark them in some way to indicate they are valuable plants and not weeds. Probably be best to not say anything about the bushes to the neighbor until you’ve know him for a long time, and can later laugh about it with him. His knowledge of landscape plants is probably limited, and you might consider marking anything you plant until he learns what to avoid. If you weigh the situation, he’s a lot more help than harm.

    Good luck!

that is all sound advice. I have some of that cloth that is supposed to prevent weeds, I as thinking of putting that around my junipers with pebbles or mulch over it.

Bustersmomma, that would be an IDEAL way to politely indicate that the plants aren’t to be mowed. (Best thing is, there’s no need to say a single word to your neighbor about it, thus saving your neighbor from undue embarrassment.)

I had my nephew mow the lawn some years ago when he was a teenager and knew everything and he managed to weedeat (weed whack)a precious miniature rose and the half barrel it was planted in. Never have figured out how he did that and didn’t mention it either. Now that he is older I might mention it to him, I’m sure he would laugh at it now and not go off in a teenage huff. The rose survived.
