I have a leukemia kitty who is around 6-7 years. Despite being FLV+, she is very healthy except for some eye issues; she is a foster, so she gets checkups often, and there’s nothing else wrong with her. She is, however, under weight, although this could be due to being a stray/in a shelter.

She is very hungry all the time, but she has a very sensitive tummy. She cannot eat dry food, cat treats, or any people food without regurgitating. Canned food, either pate or shredded, works fine, but if she eats more than one regular sized can a day (or two of the smaller sized cans), she ends up regurgitating or throwing up. She seems to regurgitate or throw up all her food once every week or two, and then takes a day before she feels up to eating again. Otherwise, she eats normally, but I think this regular purging has a lot to do with her inability to gain weight.

I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions for helping her add a few pounds? She has slowly gained weight since I got her from the clinic, but because she is a leukemia kitty I would like her to be at a more healthy weight. If anyone knows what the highest calorie canned food is, or has any supplement suggestions, or anything else, they would be greatly appreciated!

One of our TDKers, GD, has had success with Nutrical, which is a high-calorie paste supplement which you can mix in with their wet food (it says they like to lick it straight off but that doesn’t seem to work! As usual, cats don’t want to follow the instructions!).

And I just found a post from one TDKer who has experience with this — she suggested joining http://www.felineleukemia.org/
