Hi everyone, I joined in hopes of getting a little advice at this late hour. I have a neighborhood cat who occasionally comes around to eat, and who sometimes stays inside with me during poor weather. She had a litter not long ago underneath my front porch, and I took in the 2 kittens that survived. (I was trying to find them homes and got too atatched :/) Now she’s come back pregnant again, and today she walked in my door and decided to have her kittens in my house before I knew what was going on. I tried to coax her onto a blanket, but she insisted on walking around and, unfortunately, having the kittens on my carpet. Now however, she has done nothing to take care of them. She will sniff them and move them, but hasn’t made any effort to clean or feed them. It has been over an hour now, and I know she has more kittens coming, but I’m worried for the ones that are already here. They are very cold, so I’ve put small blankets around them. What should I do now? Should I feed them or wait on the mother. And despite the blankets they are still rather cold, so should I try the water bottle trick? Any help would be soooo much appreciated. I’m trying to hurry and do as much research as I can–but I’m feeling at a loss!

If you can feed them (i.e. if you have KMR formula there, or canned goats milk or can make up some glop), yes, I think I would go ahead and try and you’re right, you need to keep them warm. Is she actually with them? Can you put her and the kittens in a large cage or crate? A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or heating pad (with room so they can crawl off if they get too hot) is a good idea, as is making a nest for them in a box. Make sure they don’t get too hot either. She should be licking them and cleaning them; I would be worried too, and I think I would be ringing the vet, if you can. Are you sure there are more coming? It seems a bit like she’s already decided to reject these ones. What happens if you put her in the box with them?

I would also get her spayed as soon as possible or this will be a regular occurrence, she can get pregnant again as soon as these ones are weaned.

She is still here, yes, and I’ve tried to set them with her and get them to feed but she barely pays them any attention and they might be too cold to eat. Unfortunately it’s 2 am here, and I don’t of any 24 hour vets…but I will do more to keep them warm and go get some food.

And all of these cats will definitely be going to the humane society very soon, as I can’t afford to keep them. But thank you for your help, I appreciate it!!

You’re wonderful for rescuing them, I hope you can get them warm and get them to take some food. Best of luck with these little ones.

Bless you for taking care of them, Lolo. Jcat has given you great advice. Do you have a lamp with a regular light bulb? You could place it over the kittens (not too close, of course) so it will keep them warm, too.

Thank you, that’s exactly what I’ve done until I could get a hot water bottle. 🙂 It’s hard for me to see such small things abandoned, but I have a feeling that’s what happened to the mom as well. Thank you for all the wonderful advice!
