Hello! i need help with my 3 week year old kitten, because he had had constipation I switched his food from KMR formula to goat milk, now he has diarrhea, i don’t know what to do, I just read online that changing the diet has to be slowly, i didn’t know that, i changed his diet suddenly. I feel pretty lost right now 🙁 .

I have not heard of this happening when switching from KMR to goat’s milk at all Majorie. Did you buy it from the grocery store or do you have fresh goat’s milk by chance? It needs to be pasteurized first if you got it from a farm. The canned goat’s milk needs to be diluted with water 1 part milk to 1 part water. Make sure he doesn’t get dehydrated if he is going really often, you may need to get some pedialyte and give to him to keep his electrolytes up. Make sure to keep him warm at this time also. It makes me wonder if he has an infection or some internal parasites and it’s not the goat’s milk. I would recommend you call a vet and ask for some advice at this point too. Please keep us posted on his condition.

Thanks for replying, I changed his diet yesterday at the morning, i bought evaporated goat milk can from Kroger, i dilute 1 part milk to 1 part water, i also add half teaspoon of KAro syrup ( a vet recommended to me because he was constipated), he was fine before, he started the diarrhea today in the afternoon, so i guess its because the change of diet, i was thinking maybe if feed him more often small quantities of KMR formula but dilute with more water ( 1 part milk to 3 part of water) i don’t know if that would help him, what do you think?. I was feeding him with KMR since i found him, but he was constipated, i took him to the vet, and she said that KMR is the best brand that he will be fine after a enema and she also told me that if he can’t poop i can give him a enema at home, i did it twice. Im sorry im new in this, where i can get pedyalite?

Just feed him the goat’s milk without the karo syrup. The syrup more than likely gave him the diarrhea. The goat’s milk will NOT cause constipation, and yes KMR is good, but the powdered causes constipation and the liquid canned causes diarrhea, at least in my experience with it. Goat’s milk 1 to 1 with water will be fine, nothing else. The only time to use karo or honey, is to rub it on their gums if they become lethargic and lifeless. I am going to post some links for you on hand rearing your kitten. Please look them over, they are full of valuable info to help you. I refer to them often, even though I have done this many times before.

I don’t understand why the vet recommend karo syrup, my kitten wasn’t lethargic, he was fine, playful and always wanted to eat, i was looking online and there is not connection between kart syrup and constipation. Thank you so much i will check them now. i will continue with goat milk, i really appreciate your help.

You are welcome, Majorie. I don’t know why the vet recommended the karo, maybe thinking it would give the kitten a *kick* of energy, but I’ve not known it to help with constipation. I am not a vet, but have experience with hand rearing kittens. I hope the goat’s milk helps your kitten, it has my own and many others coming here looking for help. Is he going more than usual, or when he does go, it’s the diarrhea? I would not give your kitten another enema. That is used when kittens are constipated and after trying everything, the poop just won’t come out. Let us know how he is doing please. 🙂

I don’t trust in that vet anymore, i specified her that my kitten was fine, happy and playful. His diarrhea started today after lunch, definitely he is pooping more than normal because in the past he was constipated, he pooped maybe 5 times today, the first time it was a big quantity, the rest was very small quantity. About the constipation i tried so many things before going to the vet, i tried the triangle method, i tried putting a thermometer with vaseline and also stimulate with a wet clothe, i tried so many things without success. I went to the vet and with the enema he finally pooped, the vet gave me enema for do it at home, only with that i could make him poop, but i don’t use it everyday, i wait 3 days for use the enema, i’ve never had a kitten before, all is new for me, i didn’t know how complicated is it, i only hope i can do everything correctly, i don’t want he is constipated or with diarrhea, i only hope he can poop normal someday :(. i don’t wanna use the enema anymore, but i don’t know what more to do, for that i tried with the goat milk, i read so many great things about it, i really have the hope it can help to my baby boy. he is 3 weeks and half now (guessing) i was feeding him every 4 hours, do you think i should continue or i should feed him in different timeframe?
Thank you for the reply, i was so sad and desperate,i feel better now that i know what i can do.I definitely let you know how is he doing.

Just keep feeding him the goat’s milk, keep him warm. Once the syrup is out of his system, his pooping routine should return to normal. By that I mean maybe once a day or once every other day. Take a look at the links I provided, they should help ease your mind and give you insight on what you can do for your kitten. Of course, we are always here to help. Poop is always an issue with baby kittens, whether it’s diarrhea or constipation. You are doing a great job, did your research and go with your instincts on caring for him. He is lucky to have you! 🙂
