hello! i made an account just to ask this. i have just adopted a 3 1/2 week old kitten from a home not safe for her. i adopted her the day before yesterday at 10:00 am. i’ve been feeding her every 3 hours 2 teaspoons of kmr formula and yesterday se started peeing normally but hasn’t pooped since i got her even with stimulation. i thought this was a normal problem and that i’d need to keep encouraging her, especially since it hasnt been 48 hours yet. the lady who sold me the kitten demanded $120 today for her to order some mysterious remedy from someone in another state. help?

Forget the mysterious pot of gold. Instead get some goats’ milk to feed your baby on – so many people here recommend it above KMR.

If you take a look through recent posts here you’ll see many other people in your position – you are not alone!

I don’t have any personal experience of hand-rearing kittens, but keep coming in when you can, and somebody will be here to help you before too long. In the meantime, I can give you a couple of links to places where you’ll find lots of useful information. –

And don’t panic! You’re doing your best, and the kitten already knows you care.

My kitteen way a week old wgen he started getting costipated. I took him to the vet twice to give him enemas which helped but the problem just kept reoccurring so I changed him to goat’s milk as i saw it was a popular option here and after that change he now potties every day 2- 3 times a day and is a very healthy 4 week old. So change really recommend changing his milk to goat’s milk and dilute it 1:1 with water. If you see he doesn’t go at all I recommend to take him to the vet for at least one enema to clear your kittens system.

    Hi Sors,

Congratulations on adopting your new baby and taking her away from an unpleasant situation.
I’m no expert but I’ve hand raised three kittens [1 was 7 days old and the other 2 were 3 weeks old].

All are now happy and healthy cats whom I love more then anything.

Here’s my suggestion for kitten formula and toilet habits.
First you must remember that kittens as young as three weeks will usually defecate [poo] every 24 hours so try not to worry if she doesn’t poo every time you stimulate her but remember to help her urinate and burp her after every feed. She must be stimulated to wee after every feed however the defecation is less often.

A friend who has raised countless kittens [new borns and 3/4/5 week olds] told me the following advice which truly helped my kittens when they wouldn’t defecate.

Replace kitten formula with goats milk! I actually continued to add kitten formula mixed in with the goats milk and added a small amount of water for extra hydration.

The magic trick though [you will think I’m crazy but it works] is to add one or two drops of Linseed Oil [also known as flaxseed Oil] into the formula.

I was hesitant at first but it worked wonders for my kittens.

Linseed Oil is full of fibre and helps the gut move food/milk along their tiny guts and I was continuously rewarded with healthy stools.
Perfect consistency and the right colour too. FYI: Remember also that the sensation of her mothers tongue might feel different to your finger or soaked towel so do allow her to get used to the change.

This is your choice though so you have to be comfortable with what you feed your kitten but it worked very well for me.

The one thing I would definitely say you should do is give her goats milk as it’s full of probiotics and gives them the natural calcium they need too.

Best of luck!! Please let us know you get on 😀

Hi Sors, good advice above. I posted on the other thread, so you can take a look at that one. I didn’t check this one before I posted, sorry!

this is some good advice! i took her to the vet and they gave her a dose of laxative, and some more to take in the morning and see if she goes. if not, to have an enema. i will ask about goats milk and definitely start switching to it if she has troubles again. the vet is hoping that her colon is not too full. hopefully she will go soon!

    to everyone who wanted updates-
Blooky the kitten is now defecating from once to twice a day! she started off with diarrhea which i fixed with some medicine, and will switch to goats milk. even more- she’s learning to drink out of the bowl now! which means hopefully the end of getting up every 3 hours in the night soon!

I found my kitten yesterday. She just started eating food today, but no poop yet. I have been stimulating her but nothing yet.
