Some of the kittens had small crusty bald spots on their tails and feet, which didn’t seem like a big deal until this: Bloody tail

The kitten doesn’t seem bothered, but I am losing it. I put peroxide and antibiotic cream on it, but omg. It looks like the end of his tail was skinned and now I’m terrified that everyone else’s crusty spots will turn into this. Help help help!

    Hi Elizabeth,

Well, it could be a number of things.

    Result of flea bites
    Mange
    Rignworm

None of these are good and will be transmitted to your other kits. Only the vet can diagnose their condition and prescribe appropriate meds.

    Hi Elizabeth,
Like PG said above, the three same things came to my mind. If this area of the tail is where the kitten can reach, they chew that spot even though the itching may be somewhere else. Check for flea dirt (poop) on the kittens tummy–it’s easier to see there. Fleas will run to where there is moisture–eyes, nose, mouth, butt. You will need to let the vet check them as they may be too young yet for topical flea protection.

They definitely have fleas. I gave then their first bath today in the warm water with a squirt of dawn and a thorough rinse. The tail was already looking a little bloody and the bath just seemed to make it worse. I’ll try to get them into the humane society vet on Monday.

Yes a warm bath with Dawn will kill the fleas. Keep an eye on them and check their gums to make sure they aren’t too pale. Fleas can kill kittens quickly if they are overrun with them. They make them anemic. Make sure you dry the kittens thoroughly so they don’t become chilled. Keep us updated on what the shelter vet does for them.

The infestation isn’t bad, gums look nice and pink. Good energy levels, gaining weight. Will let you guys know what the vet says. The bathrooms in the south all seem to come with this ceiling heater, so I got it uncomfortably toasty in there for bath time. What seemed to work well was regular towel and then paper towel. That almost got them back to fluffy.
