Hi fellow members. Been meaning to post for days but haven’t managed to until now.

I have a nice grey 5 and a half mth old male I call Smoky. A very friendly and playful cat… but for whatever reason he is the most vocal cat II’ve ever known!

A person walks near kitten/his food area and he will whine/mrrr/cry/what have you constantly, and 95% of the time he has food to eat. Sometimes to the point of yelping. One would think it’s wanting attention, but I pick him up to hold him and pet him. Less and less does he purr, most of the time he wants down soon after. Within moments, he’s back to the endless whining.

He has food all the time and is eating and growing. Becoming a long cat already. Always has water and I see him drinking it fine. Has a 3 tear old cat and 2 year old loud annoying dog of my Grandma’s here to play with and I play also. He’s gotten obsessed with a laser pointer and barely bothers with any other toys now.

I suffer with severe TMJ migraines – so loght and sound are problems… will rest on bed… and he will come in and whine, whine, while seemingly for attention. Will hold him or put him on bed with me and he’ll want down or jump down almost instantly. Lately he will jump on the bed, knead a fave blanket of his that he slept on bed with me, on, in the first few weeks i had him (damn, I miss him sleeping on the bed with me :/ ) as a 6 week old, but rately sray more than a minute or two before jumping diwn again. Very very rarely he’ll jump on the bed and sleep for an hour or 2. I think maybe once in the past 6 weeks. He always wants attention, but as soon as you give it too him he doesnt want it or affection and usually rakes off and whibes all over again.

I just don’t know what to do to get him to stop, or at least a lot less. Like… I hear him the first 20 times… and he still does it, like to announce his every move while I knew he was there anyhow… haha!

I have a slight theory it may be due to him getting fixed likely in the next few weeks at 6 mths, but also have a bad feeling it won’t change even then.

Have seen forums posts about kittens missing their mother in the first few weeks or months, but he should of grew out of it by now. He’s just gotten most distant with me, and far whinier of late – and I have no idea why… aside from those boys in the back growing in on him.

The only relief I have is saying “SHHH” quick when he does it, and he stops instantly, but whines again a moment later over and over like that.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Like you said JW, he needs neutered. Male cats exhibit the behavior you are describing when they are not fixed. It would be wise to do it ASAP as you do NOT want him to start spraying urine all over the place marking territory. With a male, it’s a simple procedure, as long as he weighs 2 pounds, they will do it. It may take a few weeks for his horomone levels to drop, but he will eventually become the loving kitten you remember. And remember too, he IS a kitten, and males tend to be very high energy. Once you get this one problem taken care of, he will settle down though.

I agree with everything KZ has said! There was a time when the advice was to wait until a kitten reached 11-12 months before neutering or spaying, but that is not necessary nowadays. Medical advances mean that younger is just as safe, and it prevents the unwanted adult tendencies from starting. In any case, a boy cat has a much easier time of it than the girls – no abdominal wound, no stitches.

Smoky’s hormones are active, just like any human teen’s. All they can think about is going out and repopulating the neighbourhood – which, fortunately, he can’t do! So he doesn’t know what he wants to do instead, hence the unsettled behaviour.

The best thing for both of you is to take him to meet the vet. He’ll be fine. Probably he won’t even notice what’s happened – he’ll just come home and tell you all about the interesting place where he spent the day.

One word of warning . . . both my present boy and his older brother were done at around five months. In both cases the vet told me that “he probably won’t be hungry this evening.” Hmmm . . . The older one came home, happy, chatty as ever – and ate three dinners. (We had two other cats at the time.) The younger one came home, happy, smiling – just a tiny bit sleepy – but he ate four dinners before bed time.

Smoky will be fine, and so will you, once he’s been done, honestly. Soon as possible for both your sakes.

Thanks for the replies, and sorry about disappearing since posting.

Appears you were both right. He hasn’t been fixed yet, but hoping very soon. The lady I got him from said she’d take care of it, so just waiting for that to be arranged and happen. He’s been a lot more aggressive/rough towards the 3 yr old “adult” cat, that sometimes acts as crazy and kitten like (in between acting like the apathetic ignoring adult that always loves my attention… haha!). Aggressive – adt cat will be purring and Smoky will playfully attack him, and seemingly always challenge older cat for no reason. Smoky constantly wants attention or to play, but I will pick him up, hold him or put him on bed and pet him. Almost always he purrs, but wants and jumps down ASAP. Always seems hungry even when he has food… haha, kind of crazy with the whining… and it’s turned at times to higher pitched yelping, which reminds me of a stray I took care of years ago ahead of it spraying

Hopefully Smoky is fixed soon. Don’t know exact bday, but thanks to ranges I was given a few times I narrowed his 6mth to the 12th.

    HI JW,

KZ and CWS gave excellent advice. My concern is his aggressive behavior toward our older cat is increasing. This is a sign that Mt. Smokey will start spraying soon. I’ve provided links for low cost spay/neuter program. Perhaps the previous owner will move the date up? As KZ and CSW said he needs to be 2+ lbs. to be neutered and not a specific age.

    Good luck
