I rescued Triton and Sebastian from my yard two weeks ago when they were roughly 4 weeks old. Initial check-up by the vet showed them to be healthy. A week later, we had diarrhea and dehydration problems. They tested negative for parasites, so the vet recommended a diet change and probiotics. I’d been doing KMR formula, so I’ve slowly been introducing wet food (Royal Canin baby cat) mixed with formula and now I’ve completely cut out the KMR. They also get one dose of FortiFlora probiotics at breakfast. Sebastian seems to be improving, although his stool is still a bit soft.

Triton is having more issues. He has improved from the really watery diarrhea, but he still has pretty loose stool and I’m not sure what to try next. I’ve tried introducing some pumpkin once a day, but haven’t seen a difference – how long would it take to see results? Am I just too anxious and impatient?

What’s worse is that despite my best efforts to keep Triton clean, his hind legs and bum stayed pretty messy while I was at work. He’s now overgrooming his hind legs and has some bald patches. I’m sure this is stress/sick related, but how can I help him? Both kittens are active, playful, snuggly, and have an appetite – I just don’t know what more I can do.

Get some goat’s milk — it’s full of probiotics for his tummy and will help keep him hydrated. Just introduce a small saucer a couple of times a day. You can find it in the cold milk section or in the baking aisle in cans. It’s condensed in the cans so add water 1 to 1. Keep him clean by bathing him or some unscented baby wipes until he can keep from having accidents. Pet him and cuddle him and divert him from constant licking so that his hair will grow back in. You can use toys, like a wand toy or a laser. It will take patience, but things will start to get back to normal.

Thank you, I will try the goats milk. Hopefully that works as I’ve tried almost everything else! He gets completely pampered as soon as I get home from work, but I think the overgrooming happens overnight, despite all the cuddling.

    Hi Eva,

Her over grooming is s sign of stress. I always recommend getting a soft, squishy stuffed animal. She can use this to knead and suckle because it will comfort her.

    How are you doing?

    Hey PG,
We were doing better – I couldn’t find goat’s milk but yogurt seemed to have helped the problem, but Triton backslid last night, so of course the grooming is worse as well. So I’m trying yogurt again and will keep him on it for a while. He still has a healthy appetite and plays with his brother and is active, so I’m trying not to worry too much. But if he doesn’t improve over the weekend, I’m making another vet visit.

He does have a stuffed monkey that he chews on occasionally – any ideas on how to make him more interested in it? I’ve read that they’re too young to be interested in catnip.
