Hi! So I just got a two month old kitten. I made the mistake of setting up 2 boxes. One with Tidy Cats pellets and the other with clumping litter. She loves to jump in and out of the one with clumping so I am going to change to non clumping tomorrow. Is she going to be sick? Is clumping really bad for kittens?

Hi Alesia – I think that since you’re going to get the clumping litter out tomorrow, she should be okay. In the meantime, just check her and make sure nothing’s stuck to her.

Uhm, usually clumping is fine, as long as she isn’t eating it. You can discourage her playing in it by removing her and distracting her with a toy. I use clumping and never had an issue. Non clumping tends to hold onto the ammonia smell. If your worried about clay litter, you can try corn litter, or natural litter.
Please use caution when using help for a title. I know it’s scary with a new kitten, but a lot of the time when someone seems to be in an emergency we will refer them to a vet (:

Thanks! She’s constantly running in so I’m scared to death that she’s eating it although I can’t tell. Should I empty it tonight and stick some of the pellets from the other one in? Or will that confuse her once I buy the non-clumping?

Thanks Chaos! I put help because I am very afraid that she will become ill after doing research online.

Well if you think she could be eating it, you can empty it tonight, just make sure to clean it well before you put new litter.

    Welcome to TDK Alesia.
Kittens should have non clumping litter.
I have added a tag which will take you to previous posts on that subject and should answer your questions.
Do tell us about your kitten, what she is like and her name. We love to hear about new kittens.

Thanks for the feedback! Does corn litter or natural clump as well?

Thank you so much! She is a black kitten with very few gray short hairs. Her name is Sage and she’s amazing! Very playful but knows when to relax!

Also I’ve read SO many methods as to cleaning a litter box. Suggestions?

Her first vet visit is Monday!

Ok, not sure where the tags are now, I did add on to my reply. Can anyone tell me where they are listed now?

They can get sick but she should be fine (: corn is naturally clumping I believe, so just go with a brand that does not say scoopable or clumping. For cleaning I usually just scrub with soap and water and baking soda (:
    Sage is a cute name!

I believe, since we now utilize a search bar, tags are now used for locating posts with those same tags using the search bar. You can check the tag cloud on the front page.

    I can’t find the tags 🙁

I just read you shouldn’t change litter suddenly. I was thinking that instead of getting non-clumping, I could get those pellets and put them in the other box. BUT they are Tidy Cat pellets that are specifically made for that system. With the system, urine goes straight through the pellets under the box into an absorbent pad that kitties can’t get to. I’m afraid this will become a mess in a regular box.

    Please advise, I’m thoroughly confused!

Alesia, she sounds lovely, my cat was black with a few lighter barely discernible patches on her, now she is quite dappled with lighter patches and going brown with age.
    I love her name.
Chaos, thanks for the info on tags, maybe something else that can go on the “How To” page you started that is brilliant.

For now you might just want to keep it simple and get a normal litter. In a month or 2 you can transition her to a pellet or corn or whatever litter you’d like. You can change out half of the clumping litter, put the same brand of non clumping on top and change out more each day till its all clumping.
