Hello lovely TDKers. It’s been a while, though I pop in once in a while to read up on topics and to see how everyone is doing. I’ve been working what seems like a million hours a week and starting a new career as a groomer, hoping to do cat grooming soon too.
I’ve found myself in a bit of a pickle. After Harry, the baby, hit a whopping 13lbs and was looking pretty chunky, I decided we all need a diet. So after playing around with different foods, I’ve gotten them down a couple of pounds and everyone is looking good. We stopped free feeding, and that helped a lot but now I’m stumped. The kits all act RAVENOUS towards all food, despite receiving the correct amount of calories per day. They get into the fish food, rat food, and even people food (I left a bagel in a closed bag on my very crowded counter, did not last long).
Has anyone had good experience with diet foods? I’ve had them on a very high calorie food giving them less a day, but they just want to eat EVERYTHING. I was thinking they need to eat more throughout the day but working full time I need something that they can eat more of.

Hi Chaos, I have a link that might help. It’s quite lengthy, but it’s packed full of info on feline nutrition. I stopped free feeding my cats too, and it’s true, they always act starved. Of course, they are not but you can get a cat to do almost anything when you aren’t free feeding–just get their attention with food or treats! 😛 There are also different kinds of feeders that have timers and can release the food when you aren’t there. A lot of pet supply places on line have them. Good luck!

My sister has a food timer bowl that KZ referred to, and it works realy well for them. They both work and have elementary school kids ….

    Hi Chaos,

I’m sharing a couple of pics of Miss Gaea and (not so much) LilBit Guy:

I split a can of Fancy Feast 3 ways for breakfast and they just had their wet food! So yes, they will continue to “beg” for food. I give them moderate calorie dry food for lunch and dinner.

Miss Moppet is my skinny girl which is another problem. She can have what she wants but I have to put hers away from the other two.

I like to say “Guilt? we have it!”

Goodness PG, those two cats are adorable! The top one reminds me of my Pudge Ellen who has since crossed over the bridge. The bottom one reminds me of my Maxwell, since he’s a orange and white sweet boy too!

Well, sorry to say the answer lies in siblings and exercise, we have a bunch of cats, all fixed and inside, they eat twice a day (wet friskies small cans) with dry food out all day. They run and play and none are fat. Very generic foods.

I concur with KZ’s opinion. There is a lot to love about Li’l Bit Guy, but he’s so sweet that I would have difficulty denying him nomz. My Rainbow Bridge dweller Nicky was a huge guy as I free fed him. I don’t free feed Dorry and he’s not even 10 lbs and going on 6 yrs old. I sense that it would be hard to stop free-feeding a kit that’s used to it. Which is of no help to you, Chaos at all. But I’ll say hi anyway, and congrats on your new career!

Thanks KZ and KJ. I now believe free feed has caused weight problems for my fur balls. I’m glad you don’t have weight issues with your babies, Nick.

Same here PG. Mine dropped weight immediately after the free feeding stopped. They do get one dry kibble MEAL a day, sometimes I’m so tempted to leave it out. But Willow tends to eat anything and everything in sight, and I just can’t risk it. He needs more exercise, I’m sorry to say it’s my fault. I need to be more interactive with him on the wand toys and laser pointer. 🙁

Thanks all for great replies, I read up on everything and I have an idea on what to do, I will likely be changing a meal to a wet meal with something like the honest kitchen dehydrated food, should be more filling! I love the idea of a timer bowl, it’d be tricky to coordinate because I have bowl hogs, but I can see the benefits.
