I am fostering four young kittens, about 5-6 weeks old. They were separated from their mom by county animal control about two weeks ago. They were fine at that time, but have rapidly gone downhill. We now think they have coccidia. The rescue tried to get a vet appt for today but was unable to.

So please, whatever means you use to direct energy, be it prayer or chanting or whatever, please put some out there for these babies. Thanks!

Hi Rafi – sending tons of good vibes to your babies. I hope you are able to get an appointment ASAP so they can get started on the meds. Good luck!

Thank you all so much. <3

The black kitty passed this morning, in my lap. 2 of the others had a slight weight gain overnight, and the other stayed at the same weight which is at least better than a loss.

This is the first baby kitten I have ever lost. I am so sad.

I was going to take them yesterday back to the rescue for some meds and to see if a mama cat there might adopt them. But the rescue people were out of town and didn’t get back til night, and I don’t like to drive at night. My car is old and not really reliable and I didn’t want to risk getting stranded at night. I feel bad about this now of course, maybe he could have been saved if I had gone anyway. He was in very bad shape, almost comatose. I should have gone.

Hopefully the other three will make it. Im taking them there in about an hour, let’s hope the mama cat accepts them.

    Hi Rafi, I am sorry about the black kitten. {{{hugs}}}
Please don’t second guess yourself. Some kittens just aren’t strong enough. This little baby knew love and care thanks to you.

it’s hard not to second guess. hindsight is 20/20!

We decided not to put them with the mama, since we are uncertain what they have and didn’t want to infect her. So the other three are still with me. Two are doing pretty well, the orange one is still terribly thin but he’s eating better on his own, they all are, and I think they will all make it. We are going to get them to the vet on Monday. If they are not better at all, I will just go in the morning and wait for them to work us in, rather than waiting for an appt.
Thank you all for your support and prayers!

Good plan, if you are there, chances are good they will squeeze you in for an appointment. If it’s coccidia, the sooner they get on Albon, the better.
My sister fosters and she has lost more than a few kittens. To help cope, she tells herself this: “They would all be lost if not for my help.”
    Thank you for fostering!!!

the three remaining kittens are much improved, and now eating pretty well! The one that was thinnest gained 1.6 oz in the last 24 hours! I think they’ve turned the corner, and will all be fine.

    🙂

Thank you all again for your support. I really believe it helps!

    update.

Sadly, this morning I found the orange kitten, Pixel, dead.

We had dosed them again for coccidia, and also started them on antibiotics. They started eating and gaining slowly within twelve hours of the first dose of amoxicillin. That continued for 6 days. Then on Sunday, they stopped eating again and began losing weight again.

I continued giving sub cu and force feeding them, but it wasn’t working. The largest kitten, a torti named Jazza, continued eating a little but still lost all she had gained in the past 6 days. She continued to be energetic and playful. The other two slowly sank into lethargy.

After removing the body this morning I took a good look at the gray kitten, Mia. She was clearly dying. A decision was made to humanely euthanize her.

At the same time we had the torti tested for felv and fiv. She is only 1 pound 9 ounces, but they were able to get the blood sample. She tested negative, however the tech thinks she has fip.

I realize that some won’t make it, but it’s just very sad, such cute sweet babies, such a short time to have fun and love and be loved.

I know there are fosters who stop fostering because it’s so painful when something like this happens, but I have no intention of stopping. I can bear the occasional heartbreak, for the sake of the ones who do make it and have happy healthy lives.

Thank you all again for your support thru this difficult experience. <3

Hi Rafi, I’m sorry for the loss and the turn for the worse on the other kittens, very sad. You totally rock for fostering. If not for foster parents, so many more kittens would be lost. I am glad you will continue.

I too am so sorry for your loss Rafi. Blessings that those kits who can make it through this crisis do so.I’m so glad that foster purrents are out there, I adopted Dorry from a shelter that works through network of fosters. The success stories are so gratifying, but the heartbreak would rip me open. How caring and kind-hearted you are not giving up. Blessings that the rewards outweigh the anguish. But a life saved is worth it all, even if it’s too short, the kitties know only caring, and leave for now enveloped in a cocoon of love.

My heart goes out to you, Rafi. You did the best you could do and remember that your wee fosters knew only love and kindness in their short lives. 😥

I can’t say it any better than those before did… but I am so sorry for the loss of your kittens. I know I have been devastated when I lost kittens, and almost whole litters for no apparent reason. I am always looking for reasons or answers and sometimes there just aren’t any. You are left with the emptiness and grief. Thank your kind heart for sticking with it as these little ones would have NO CHANCE without people like you…and while we are here, we need to make a difference. Find comfort in knowing that you did.

update: Jazza did well, though she clearly missed her siblings. She is now back at the rescue, waiting to be adopted. She’s very high energy and has a lot of personality, so I’m sure she’ll get a great home! (and I have three new fosters!)
