Hello, I got a 3 week old kitten 11 days ago. I have him on kitten’s formula which I got from the vet. He has been constipated ever since. I have tried everything, have been preparing the formula with twice the amount of water and feed him more often. I massage his stomach before and after each feeding. For the last 48 hours I am adding few drops of sunflower oil to the formula and as advised by the vet’s nurse I gave him one feeding of regular milk and nothing helps. He is still constipated, I have to put a little of the thermometer in his real end and then massage his stomach and stimulate his real end for him to poop. I use the triangle method when I stimulate him. He is in pain while he poops. He is urinating with no problem and he is getting very strong and very active. He looks like a healthy kitten. Is there anything else I can do to stop his constipation.

Since he is 4, nearly 5 weeks old, he should be able to go potty by himself. You may need to go to the vet to make sure he doesn’t have an anal blockage that is causing him to be unable to poop. For the pain, I recommend switching to using cotton balls, as it is less rough than a washcloth (you may already be using cotton balls, I don’t know). Also, try to feed him less often. The last thing we want to do is to continue to put too much into his system while he can’t expel it himself. Try feeding him every 5-6 hours, and stimulate him every 3 hours with cotton balls and put just a little bit of vaseline on his behind. Also check his bedding to make sure the bugger isn’t pooping in his bed (: Once he has gotten a satisfying amount of poop out of his system, continue to feed him every 5-6 hours and stimulate him every 5-6 hours, 15 minutes after feeding. Also, start trying to give him kitten pate mixed with milk. Usually when kittens are weaned the constipation problems go away, unless it’s a blockage. I had kittens who could only poop every 4 days and as soon as they were weaned they became poop monsters |:

Thank you for the advice, I never had a kitten before. I answered an ad and the people I took him from weren’t sure how old he was. I did some research and figured he was about 3 weeks old. I have learned a lot thanks to this side, advice and links I found here. You said I should feed him every 5-6 hours. Should I still add twice amount of water to the formula? I check his bed constantly hoping to find a mess 🙂 I will stick to your advice and will let you know how he’s doing. Can’t wait to have a poop monster at home 🙂

Yes, do keep diluting the formula. You can also add canola oil in place of sunflower oil. I didn’t have enough bedding for 4 poop monster kittens XD As long as you are getting some poop out he will be ok. But if he goes more than 4-5 days without pooping he should see a vet. And after 2 days of not pooping you should stop his eating at 15mL so he doesn’t over do it, and continue every 5-6 hours (: Hopefully he will take to kitten food and get some extra nutrients to fight his constipation.

Hello, yesterday I gave him chicken pate twice. Today when I was stimulating him to urinate he pooped. WOW!!!!!!!! For the first time he did it with just a little stimulation. THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE 🙂

Keep getting him to eat the pate, as his dietary needs are changing. I am so happy he pooped for you! Now, you can start stimulating him in the litterbox, this way he can start to understand that it is for pottying, and it will make litterbox training that much easier (:
