Simon was finally sent to the vet yesterday morning! We paid him a visit this morning and were told he had a reaction against the antibiotic we were prescribed for ringworm. He was becoming jaundice and just wasn’t himself at all. This morning, he recognized us and walked right up to us to have us pet him. He seemed to be doing just great! Even the vet was excited to see his speedy recovery! However, we visited him later today around 5. The vet gave us news that he had an episode around 3pm. He went into his litter box, cried out, fell over and began turning blue. She gave him steroids and warm blankets, so he was doing better. He also ate and seemed more alert about our presence. She said it’s the first time that she witnessed a cat do that and if it happens again, she’ll have to do blood work and an x-Ray. Keep Simon in your prayers and thoughts! She said she would call if it happens again. Luckily, no phone calls! We’re going to visit our Simon tomorrow as well, which is when they’ll probably remove his IV ๐Ÿ™‚

Has anyone witnessed their cat do this?

He seems to be a real strong buddy! I hope he keeps fighting until it’s all over. We’re buying him lots of fancy feast and a large cat tree for when he gets home ๐Ÿ™‚ His little friend Leo is also waiting for him to play again haha..

Never saw this, though there’s always a risk of adverse reaction to any meds. Sending lots of healing vibes to Simon. Hope he recovers quickly and comes home very soon.

I’ve never seen a reaction like that either but hoping Simon continues to improve.

I had a cat that had a very strong reaction to anti fungal meds like your Simon. His wasn’t as severe as Simons was, but I stopped his medication immediately. I am not sure if your cat was on an antibiotic, or it was anti fungal for ringworm. Any animal like Joan said, can have an adverse reaction to any medication, and from the sounds of your earlier post that’s what was going on, which is why I said to stop it immediately. I was afraid of liver failure and mentioned that ringworm is not life threatening, but liver failure is. I would have her do bloodwork and an x ray NOW, and not wait for it to happen again and to stop that medication. I know this person is a vet and I am not, but waiting for it to happen again just doesn’t sound like good medicine to me. Please keep us posted, and prayers to you and little Simon for a full and fast recovery!

Was just thinkin what KZ said.. An antibiotic would only be prescribed if the initial ringworm fugus caused a secondary bacterial skin infection…oral Antifungal meds arent commonly prescribed as some people don’t think theyre very effective.. Most vets would suggests sulphur baths or an Antifungal cream.. but all meds can sometimes have side effects..

As for turning blue… I have heard of cases of cats ingesting paracetamol .. It’s extremely toxic to cats and normally the only tell tale sign is that the cats gums turn a purple blueish color.. Make sure there’s no chance the antibiotics prescribed had paracetomal in them or were stores near paracetomal..

Sending prayers his ways poor fella <3

He was on a Lyme dip treatment, but the nurses said he was becoming aggressive. Of course, what cat likes being bathed frequently. They said they would prescribe an antibiotic (ketoconazole) and discontinue the baths. I wouldn’t mind bathing him myself… And I stopped the antibiotic the moment KZ told me to! And took him to the vet first thing in the morning when they were open. And I will tell the vet to perform bloodworks and x-ray’s tomorrow instead. It’s better to be safe than sorry, no matter the price. Thanks! I will keep everyone updated on Simon’s progress!

Poor little fella… Make sure to ask the vet about the possibility of him coming into contact with paracetamol too..

Saying a prayer for your kitty. My Leo had ringworm as a kitten and was on the same meds (if I recall correctly). I was scared of them…always leery of meds. Especially scary when my human kids and I had to go on them…long horrible story. That fungus can be vicious. Keep us updated.

My granddaughters came into contact with ringworm messing around with their fair calves and the oldest one got it. We went to the pharmacy and bought OTC anti fungal cream (which one is was now I can’t recall) it was cleared up within a couple of weeks. So sorry little Simon is having to endure this. Yes, please keep us posted on the little guy…

Thank you everyone! I’m positive that with all this support, our little buddy will get through this! We are visiting him this afternoon and I’m really excited! Hopefully it’s all good news ๐Ÿ™‚ I will let everyone know how it goes! We didn’t get a phone call from the vet last night at all, so it’s a good sign. She has been staying with him all night and that makes me grateful.

She probably did do a blood test and an X-ray. My mother said she gave her permission if she found it really necessary to do so.

Katie lost half her coat to ringworm when she was a kitten (she was the daughter of two cats abandoned in the country), and she was never on any oral meds. Like Kittyzee said, she was treated with an OTC anti-fungal topical medication, something made to treat humans’ athlete’s foot. This is what her vet told us to do. I, too, find it odd for a cat to be on antibiotics for a fungal infection. Antibiotics are effective only against bacteria. I’d ask the vet about that.

Buttons, I wasn’t familiar with the term paracetamol and in looking it up I found out it was acetaminophen or Tylenol type pain reliever. A friend of mine found out the hard way not to give her cat Tylenol, it ended up taking her life, I believe was liver (or kidney, I can’t remember which one) failure. Just a reminder to NEVER give a pet any kind of medication until it’s checked out through a vet first. I certainly hope little Simon is on the road to feeling better and coming home to his family. If you are not satisfied with the care Simon’s vet is giving him, you could call another one and talk to them over the phone or take him in. Can’t wait to hear how he’s doing..

Ketoconazole is an anti fungal….just to clear that up. And it’s wonderful when the OTC creams work. I’d think its what most vets suggest trying first. But sometimes they don’t work…for cats or humans.

Yeah, just like humans are allergic to certain types of things, our Simon probably had a bad reaction towards this antibiotic. However, I have some great news! We visited Simon today. He is IV-free! He’s also much more active and purring when we pet him. And extremely hungry. He finished a bowl of food and was looking for more! The fainting was probably due to having little to almost no nutrition in his system for a few days. The vet assistant told us that if he keeps up like this, he might be back home by tomorrow! Yes, we are all happy and excited! I’m grateful for everyone’s prayers and thoughts for his well-being! He’s much more active today than how he was yesterday.
