Hi all, I’m new here and desperately looking for advice. Near my house I have feral cats, one of these cats was pregnant (she’s probably less than a year old) she had 4 kittens on Wednesday (22nd April) she stayed with them for a short time and ran off, I hadn’t seen her since so before going out a left a bowl of fresh chicken near the kittens to entice her bak, after going out for the day I returned home to find the chicken untouched and the kittens looking like they had died, they were cold and wet and hardly moving, I picked them up and took them to the vets, 2 of the kittens were unable to close their mouths by I have two survivors, these are now 4 days old, I have been feeding them the kitten formula that I purchased from the vets, at first the wee was dark orange and the poo hard and black (the vet said this is because they hadn’t been fed by mum and dehydrated) their poop has changed from hard and black to yellow, however the more they poop the more yellow and sloppy it gets, I am mixing the food as the packet States (1 spoon powder to 3 1/2 spoon water) I’m looking g for any advice on what could help this poop and if it’s maybe something serious? This is the first time I have ever hand reared kittens so any advice please would be great! I’m feeding every 2 hours they are taking On average 4-5ml per feed.

    Loola,

Thank you for trying to save these kittens. It is a daunting job but rewarding.

Here’s some links that may help you. Your feral mom probably didn’t understand what was happening to her. She is young and didn’t recognize the kits as her own. For what it’s worth, you might try trap-neuter/spay-return. Many local rescue agencies can help you do this so they don’t have anymore kittens.

Remember, if you are concerned let the vet. know what’s going on.

On the Chat link go to “General Chat” and “Cats and Kittens” and that is normally where we post information that you’re looking for. Do keep us informed.

Loola, bless you for taking these little ones in to raise, it’s a scary but rewarding job. I am going to post a few links for you to check out. Once you have read them, if you have questions, or need any help, please come back as many of us have hand reared kittens. I will say before you start checking out the links that goat’s milk is a wonderful substitute for KMR. It is non constipating and has good flora for their gut, and my last kitten thrived on it–he will be a year old on May 1! You can find it in the cold milk section of the groceries (even Walmart) and in the baking aisle in cans condensed–just add water 1 to 1. It’s very cheap to buy and lactose free unlike cow’s milk!

Hi, Lola, mustard yellow to tan is a normal colour for kitten poo if they are completely on milk, however it should be about the consistency of soft toothpaste. If the diarrhea continues, I would check with the vet, as it could be gastro and you don’t want them to get dehydrated. The goats’ milk is a great substitute. I have added the two tags, ‘orphans’ and ‘diarrhea’, if you click on these pink tags, you will find loads of threads with advice. This is a great set of videos on bringing up abandoned babies, it gives you all the basics.

And Messybeast has a section on diarrhea:

It could be that the milk mixture is too rich for them or you are overfeeding.
Bless you for looking after these little ones.
