My cat had 3 ginger babies on June 16. After 48hours I realised the smallest wasn’t feeding well and was very dehydrated. I bought some formula and started syringe feeding, it was touch and go for a few days but now he is putting on weight really well and even starting to take the bottle sometimes. he was 73g when i weighed him at 2 days and now he is 160g at 10 days old and he is alert and active and not dehydrated at all. Mum cat is still happy to cuddle and keep him warm and she toilets him so all seems to be going well.

My question is, everywhere I have looked says they need feeding every 2-3 hours at this age. He will take 8-10ml really quickly but then if i try to feed him 3 hours later he will have maybe a ml or 2.

Should I try to give him less but more regularly (5ml every 2-3 hours) or just let him have the 10ml every 4 hours (sooner if he’s meowing)

I’ve had cats all my life but never had to feed one from newborn so this is all new. I’m proud that I’ve brought him back from almost death to a happy active kitten so I just don’t want to do anything wrong at this stage x

Hi Lauren, so glad that you were watching the kittens closely and noticed that he needed extra care. Since you are not having any problems with him (no diarrhea or constipation) I would keep feeding him the way you are. It’s wonderful that the mother is keeping him clean and stimulating him to pee and poo, that is a great relief!
I will post a couple of links on hand rearing kittens—they are the ‘go to’ sites that a lot of us have used over the years. You will find them full of info and facts on size and amounts of milk to be feeding. Remember, that each kitten is an individual and all these facts are just general guidelines. 🙂

Thank you so much. He had 10ml this morning but has only drank little bits since and hasn’t been taking to the bottle very well so I think it was coming out too fast for him (had to cut the nipple hole bigger as he wasn’t sucking it) so I think I’m going to go back to the syringe again, stick to what was working! I tried to post a picture of the little guy but couldn’t work out how on my phone 🙂

Not sure if there is a problem with him, is it possible he couldn’t nurse just because he was so tiny and weak when he was born and now he’s bigger he just can’t get the sticking action? There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with him as far as i can tell, and mum cat isn’t rejecting him at all. When his brother and sister nurse he just cuddles up with them and goes to sleep.

Sometimes the smallest kitten in the litter does have a problem with the sucking action, they aren’t developed enough physically or mentally to handle the motion, I think. Given time and practice, they become proficient at the sucking motion, because it’s instinctual. The nipples are another problem altogether though. I have made an X in it, as a hot pin in the top does not work. They suck and suck and nothing comes out. Squeezing the bottle creates other problems–the kitten getting too much too fast and aspirating the milk into the lungs, eventually causing aspiration pneumonia. At least with the syringe, you know how much he is getting and can control it. It wouldn’t hurt trying the bottle again..they are cheap and you can switch out nipples as he gets older.

    Hi Lauren,

Find a free site to upload pictures to TDK. There are other free site but most of us use photobucket.com. I’m sure there’s an app so you can upload pictures from your phone.

Thanks for giving your wee guy an extra boost. You’re awesome!

Thanks, I think I’ve managed it, although I think you need to click the picture to see it so not sure I’ve done it right. Thanks for all your help I’ve done the x in the nipple and he took 8ml so hopefully it’s not too fast for him x

I guess this site doesn’t like pictures from a phone.
