Dell, Mr MS played double bass and I played clarinet. We sat on opposite sides of the orchestra pit and our eye met, the rest is history. Not much culture shock for me moving from the city as I spent lots of time on my grandparents farm. The isolation of where we moved to was the biggest thing but I grew to love that too.
Daughters name is a nickname/contraction and yes it is nice having her live close by as our other daughter lives a 6 hour drive away.
Yes, we have an nectarine tree, it’s an old fashioned white flesh breed too and was on the property when we bought many many years ago. Also an old fashioned plum and a wonderful orange tree. We also have a lime and a dwarf kumquat and cherry guava which we have planted over the years. We grow lots of veges but not enough to feed us all the time. Oh rhubarb is delicious. Maybe it’s a Scottish thing. I stew the rhubarb and then add crushed canned pineapple for a sweet and sour taste. Delicious with cereal. I believe our kumara is like your southern sweet potato but we tend to eat it roasted or boiled and mashed mainly and not in a sweet potato pie.
I love having plants for the Monarch butterflies, I raised over 60 butterflies several years back but we now have a big problem with Asian paper wasps that eat the eggs, caterpillars and even have a go at the chrysalis. I am destroying any was nests when I find them building them.

This has been a fun read for me too. Sitting here on Sunday morning reading and refreshing my memory again.
MS, I did not realize that your farm was on such a large scale! Good grief that’s a lot of sheep and cows, and if you weren’t milking, then they must have been brood cows, which means you had calves to worry about too. I am in awe, and in a good way. It’s a hard life, but a good one, and one that takes just about every ounce of energy, blood, sweat, tears and every other bodily function out of you! πŸ˜†
Dell, I live in Ohio, and am married to a farmer. We raise corn, soy beans, wheat and hay. We have beef cattle also, but not on the very large scale. We grow the corn and hubby grinds it with other minerals, etc. to feed the cattle, along with hay and grass pasture.
We have two daughters, and three granddaughters ages 15, 12, and 2. I have cared for all three starting out and am currently caring for the 2 yr. old while her mother works.
I am also bothered with hip problems brought on by an injury when I stepped on a cat wand and dislocated my hip. When I fell, it popped back in and didn’t notice any problem until a year or so after. It has steadily gotten worse, and this week will see my ortho dr. for what the next step is. I certainly do not want to go through the rest of my life in this kind of pain. Of course, the good old arthritis always sets in to the injuries that we suffered before and in my case, many years ago in my twenties with my sprained ankles. 😳
I have worked various jobs over the years, in financial institutions with most of them being in the admistrative assistant field. Last job was in a 3 church cluster as the ad. min. and left before the last priest was getting ready to retire. I just couldn’t go through another administration change after having gone through 3 prior. You would think a church setting to be an easy one, and it was very rewarding, but the most challenging in a long career of administrative duties.

Today is a lazy day for me and I am going to mosey downstairs, look for more coffee and maybe a long soak in the tub!
    Later everyone!!

Oh noes MS! All my yarn has mysteriously disappeared!!! And there’s a wee noir bat/kit with a smirk on her face! What else might I have done “under the influence”!

Dell, no other career for me! Got my Eng Lit (all but useless) degree. had been working in a major dept store through college for extra $$$, and they took an interest in my edu bkgd. Offered me a job as copywriter straight after grad! Different jobs along same lines came along, including a stint as communications purrson at a Women’s Centre and copywriting/mktg for NFB (our National Film Board.) Plus many yrs for a major publishing company. So done with the corporate world! Now most of what I do is translation French to English. When I am offered $$$ I willingly accept LOL, if not I volunteer using same skills, to keep busy and for self-satisfaction.

Also did ballet, started when I was way young. Never went pro and segued into jazz and modern dance. Then aerobics craze hit. Now it’s spin cycle that has my full attention. πŸ˜‰ as IMHO it’s the toughest workout pawsible!

Happy Sunday everyone – hope you are enjoying the TDK Halloween party. I spent yesterday with niece and baby Ty. Then hubby and I trekked to Hamburg Pennsylvania to see the King Frost parade last night. Got home and now here we are!

As for TDK land, Leela is embracing her diva ways and is dressed as Christine, and Comet, not to be outdone, is dressed as the Phantom of the Opera. Not knowing what Mac’s story is beyond 2 years ago, I wasn’t expecting much. However, he grabbed one of my flannel shirts and tied a bandana to a stick and is a hobo. Does anyone say hobo anymore?

Now time to catch up on posts. Have a great day all!

Dell, you’ve got me blushing at your compliment! To me one of the most wonderful things about TDK is that we all seem to come from different places/bkgds etc. and yet we have fun just chatting about stuff. And not just kits either.

JJ, I think that the PC phrase now is “homeless person.” But I’ll still go with hobo. πŸ˜‰ Not surprised that Miss Leela is going as Christine.

So I got my yarn back in exchange for my soul. But hah! Instead I will be giving the bat/kit some sole, or the one from my shoe. Kits know naught of synonyms! πŸ˜‰

Here’s my latest quickie knit endeavor. Same yarn as per sachet. That’s the last one in pic. The other 2 were made a while back. Fab way to use up yarn and stash o’ buttons. Plus just the right head warmers for current weather, until one has to move on to cowl, hoods and the like.

    Now it’s back to sweaters!

BTW, lagatta wondering if you figured out a way to use cedar as moth preventative. As mentioned, I don’t have moths but I have come up with a better way to use cedar oil. OK, so same plastic salt/pepper shakers, or could use small plastic jars with lids and drill holes in top. All cheap $$$ Store stuff. Then I cut up a sponge to fit the receptacle and drizzled cedar essential oil (also did some with lavender oil) on sponge. Closed up receptacle and much stronger scent. Plus when scent evaporated easily replaceable. Placed one in all my sweater bins, lingerie drawers, chest and one is going to my gym locker.

Even if you don’t have moths, anyone can get them. I know someone in a lovely condo built in a large deconsecrated church nearby (since there are fewer churchgoers, they are consolidating – people can still walk to the two nearby Catholic churches that have taken the faithful from that parish) who has had a horrible problem with them, although that building was utterly gutted during the renovation process and looked for a long time like a wartime ruin.

It is important to keep prevention in mind. I never put clothes away without washing or dry cleaning them either. My new merino pullover is stil in my freezer; I’m afraid to get it out. Today I’m wearing a merino sweater with moth damage (several little holes) but obviously I can’t wear that to work outside the home and wouldn’t wear it to socialize.

As for useless degrees, mine are Italian studies (literature, language, other courses) and history, with a master’s thesis on an Italian expatriate workers’ movement, in particularly here. But even useless degrees lead one to employment opportunities. I’m sad today, as I spent at least a year and a half studying in Perugia, and several towns nearby have sustained destruction and damage to priceless historic buildings, but fortunately the death and injury toll is low. Italy has a lot of problems, but they do seem to have professionals and volunteers very dedicated to lifesaving, and this also pertains to other sentient beings.

Livia has gone out in our garden, but I’m keeping an eye on her and will soon make the sounds that lure her back upstairs. Fortunately cruelty to black cats isn’t a big part of the local culture, but it takes just one pervert.

Lagatta, I suffered moth damage to some very nice clothes and am hoping I can find someone to mend them. Those that escaped I put into an older, very nice (before the puppies) cedar chest. When I take out a sweater that I may or may not need that day, I put it in a plastic bag with cedar blocks. Does that keep them safe? I’ve always heard that cedar repels moths. Is it true or just a myth? Dell

Don’t know Dell. But cedar and some other scents are said to repel moths. For sure I would not touch those poisonous and horrid smelling moth balls. In any case cedar sure smells good. As mentioned I’ve never encountered one those wool-lovin’ insects. And I have like about 70+ (I kid you not) hand knit sweaters, vests, jackets, coats, etc. and would be most unhappy if they got ruined!

But things do happen, such as snags. That’s why whenever I finish something I keep some of the yarn in case any repairs are eventually necessary. Sweater holes can be fixed, even by using thread in the same shade to gather the hole together. Some bought sweaters include extra yarn just for this purpose, sorta like providing extra buttons.

Good morning all. We had a cold night, HRH abandoned the tent I had built for her on Daddy’s chair and came upstairs to snuggle up with me. Woke to sunshine so at least the day will warm up quickly. HRH was out early investigation the yard work we did yesterday and giving her approval although she is not so sure about the ghostly shape that happens to be three small milkweed plants surrounded by old net curtains to keep the Monarch butterflies off until the plants are big enough to not be entirely devoured by a single caterpillar in one feeding session. I popped a solar light inside the net last night and it was lightly illuminated like a wee ghost. LOL
KZ, yes they were breeding cattle but I think we were only raising them to breeding age and selling them off as breeders. We also had bulls. I didn’t have anything to do with that side of the farm as the manager was quite safety conscious about the bulls. I did assist with the building of the new stockyards and they were massive and really solid to handle the big bolshy beasts. Also Mr MS was a shepherd on the farm, it belonged to the government. All those particular farms in the area have now been broken into smaller farms and are privately owned. It was and still is a beautiful and isolated area even though a main highway runs through it. Life there was simple, busy and very connected to nature. Quite a change for someone who worked in clinical biochemistry but easy to adapt to for me. Oddly enough my arthritis never gave me problems there, I suspect it had something to do with living at a much higher altitude than where I live now at sea level.
Guess it’s Halloween Day here. Haven’t had any T or Ters for several years and then those that did knock didn’t bother to make an effort and dress up and were just out for any freebies they could get. I don’t have anything for them as Halloween is relatively new here in NZ.
KJ, great headwarmers. Keep it up and I can see you with a stall at a market day.
Lagatta it is lovely to hear about Livia enjoying the garden.
Time I headed outside and dug compost to fill old tyres so I can plant out my zucchini and buttercup pumpkin.

For sure MS! All that I would need would be a market day, which is in short supply here in the big city! πŸ˜‰

No T or Ters (took me a while to get meaning!) here either as condo bldg is locked so no one can get in without ringing.

H’Ween srsly not my hol, however it is purrfect time for me to pick me up some stuff for my dress-up hol as Purim which is in March. Mentioned this a few wks back, at $$ store picked up black lace mask and hot pink fishnet elbow-length fingerless gloves. With black T/tights and purrhaps some magenta streaks in spiked hair (if colour doesn’t run, if not gel/spray will suffice) I will go to spin class as Goth grrrl! No one else has the guts to even put on a simple mask, whatever. I’m not one to wait for the crowd, I set my own style.

For yrs I did a kit thing, but the mask was not all that much fun when I began srsly sweating (or glowing or whatever.) This lace one is very light and fabric so should work. If I’m not drenched through after wkt, what was the point?

Well, just proved to self yet again that asking is almost always a good thing! Long story short. N. and I ordered ourselves some jewellery from a “unique” online vendor. Order includes gold-tone 3-D small kit earrings which I so don’t really need. Waiting too long IMHO so called Customer Service. Prob is with new warehouse. I was not happy. But am always polite. Result? 20% discount and shipping charges waived. So $30 order is now $13! Well worth the wait!
