“I want to know when my papa will come for me,” Thomas says quietly. “I love it here, but I do miss him.”

“You remind me of Darlene,” says the Wolf. “She asked that, too, and she had been through much the same things when she was alive. She, too, had to be helped to come here when life became too painful.”

“Where is she?” asks Thomas, his silky black head whipping around. “Can I talk with her?”

“No, Thomas. Darlene was here for a little while, and then her mama, her Betty, came for her and walked with her over the Bridge to the Blessed Realm.”

“How long was Darlene here? What does she look like? Is she nice?”

“Darlene is a brown tabby and white cat, with lovely eyes, and she now lives in the Blessed Realm with her mama, her papa, and her dear friends and family. The Blessed Realm is much like the Meadow, with peace and plenty all around us, but our human friends are there with us, too.”

The Wolf bows his head, thinking of the Good Saint, Francis, who will come for him at the end of time. He sighs softly, for although the Meadow is lovely, he misses Francis.

“And yes, adds the Wolf, “she is very nice. Betty, her dear mama, tried to teach her lovely manners, although Darlene admits that she could never learn to walk by a food bowl without sampling it!”

“What happened to Betty?” says Thomas. “What is she like?”

“She is a very dear and kind lady, who like so many had a difficult life. She had cancer, too, which is so painful. But now, like Darlene, she is healed and whole, and lives each day in perfect love and peace.”

“What happened when Betty came here for Darlene?”

“Oh, Thomas, it was so wonderful! The sky suddenly grew brighter, the sun warmer. Darlene was playing with two other cats by the Brook, and then: every sound ceased. Her head lifted and she knew: Betty was coming. Darlene raced through the green Meadow to the foot of the Bridge. She saw her mama, her beloved Betty, who was dressed in shining white.

“Darlene started crying loudly and they ran to each other. Betty, young Betty, bent down scooped her up like a baby, and Darlene could not stop crying or purring or twining in her mama’s arms.

“Betty kissed her, and she said, “My darling Leeny!” And she could not stop kissing her sweet little cat.”

    The Wolf sighs.

“Then they walked over the Bridge, Darlene still cuddled in Betty’s arms, and both of them, shining, moved into the white mist at the end of the Bridge, into the Blessed Realm.”

    …………………………………………………………………..

As Betty reaches the far end of the Bridge and walks further into the Blessed Realm, Darlene still resting blissfully in her arms, the mist begins to clear. As the light streams around her, Betty sees three more kitties running toward her. One is a sleek black cat, Pud. At the sight of him, Darlene begins to purr like a motorboat and jumps down from Betty’s arms. Pud had been a wonderful big brother to her when she was a little kitten, and she can’t wait to greet him again. Smiling, Betty kneels down and reaches out her arms to the other cats. A fluffy marshmallow of a white cat, Snowball, climbs into her arms and rolls over on his back, just as he used to do when he and Betty were on Earth. Betty holds him and rocks him, calling him her baby just as she always did before, and gazes at him with love.

Pud puts his paw on Betty’s arm. “Guess what, Mama?” he says. “Papa’s on a trip to Saturn. He didn’t know you were coming today, but I’m sure that sweet young Man will tell him you’re here. He’ll be back right away to see you.”

“Papa’s coming home? I want to see him and bring him to Mama,” says Snowball as he rolls out of Betty’s arms.

“Let’s all go!” cries Darlene, and the reunited family scampers off together.

Betty smiles at them as they leave. Her husband, Warren, had always dreamed of exploring space, and now he is doing it without effort, in complete freedom. Then, Betty notices the third cat who had come running to greet her. This is a kitty she doesn’t recognize. It had sat waiting patiently during the reunion with Pud and Snowball, and now it comes walking gently toward her, purring.

“Hello,” says Betty. “I haven’t seen you before.” She picks up the kitty and strokes it gently.

“I know,” says the cat. “I just wanted you to know that I’m glad you got here and that I forgive you for sending me here.”

Suddenly Betty remembers: the pawprints, the canned food, the poison, the shrieks….She bows her head and cries at the memory, and also at the love of the kitty and of the Sweet Young Man who made it possible for them to be together in peace. She doesn’t cry for long, though, because the Light of the Blessed Realm washes away all pain. The pain is replaced by joy at seeing the cat well, whole, and happy.

“It’s funny, though,” says the kitty. “I don’t really know how I got here. The last thing I remember is sitting on a car eating some yummy wet food. The next thing I knew, I was lying in some really soft grass, and there was a Wolf stroking me with his nose.”

“That’s all right,” says Betty quietly. “You don’t need to remember.”

Leeny, I think God is loving and merciful – eager to forgive us of our sins!
