Here’s a couple of bright developents for the abandoned Athens cats. That piece in the Banner-Herald about the cats’ being euthanized tomorrow apparently lit a fire under prospective adopters. As of yesterday, many adoption applications had been submitted. When I stopped by the shelter yesterday, they were very busy. People were looking at the cats, and some of them chose cats on the spot. (One woman called to someone in the waiting area, “We got number 17!”) I also heard a volunteer telephoning someone to say that they now had room for a cat whom the person wanted to surrender. This afternoon, the rest of the people whose applications have been approved are to go to the shelter to choose their cats. I think those who have already been spayed/neutered will be able to go home today or tomorrow; the rest can leave after their surgery. While I was there, I completed an application myself and stated on it that I wanted them to contact me if the life-or-death situation arose in which a cat would be euthanized for lack of a home. I had asked my landlord on Friday if he would object to my bringing in a third cat, and he said he didn’t “think it would make any difference”. The volunteer said that she was pretty sure the socialized cats would get homes; there was less interest in prospective outdoor cats and barn cats, though.
The other good news is that the perpetrator surrendered to authorities and has been charged with 50 counts of animal cruelty. Here’s the link to the Banner-Herald’s story about that.
