Good Morning , I am a newbie to this site. I took in 4 orphan kittens last week. They are about 2 1/2 – 3 weeks old. I think the feral Mom is dried up of milk. They were crying so loud and Mom kept taking off for hours at a time. My heart couldn’t take it any longer, so I brought them in. I started them on Hartz kitten formula, and they devoured it. So I know they were starving. I looked on line and have been researching ever since. I contacted my vet ( as I already have 7 old kitties as it is. I set up their I call it the hot box ( but only heated on low heating pad, and only on one side as directed W/ the towels and I also put in puppy pads as well. Now they all take the bottle w/ no problem. yes I got them to go potty( in the way described ) yuck – but have too. They were doing pretty good until ! I changed the formula to 21st century essential pet kitten replacement. 2 seemed now constipated, but the other 2 gave me some and I took that to the vet with us yesterday. I am sorry if this is long – but I am just not sure as to what I am doing with these little ones. I was allowing them at first to visit with the Mom a little ( Mom wont let me near her I guess she is afraid of humans ) but then I noticed she had conjunctivitis and now 2 of the babies now seem to have it, so I stopped the visits. well seeing the vet – they were all weighted, and checked – they have wormy tummies, so she gave them worm meds, amoxicillin drops and eye salve.
Here is the problem : Yesterday upon giving the the amox, I accidentally gave them too much before I noticed, okay so I didn’t give the next dose. UPON waking this morning for feeding, the box was a Honorable mess. they had diarrhea during the night — I had to give them all tub baths and dry completely. They ate a whole lot more this morning but they all still have the potties. I noticed a few drops of blood as well. I called the vet and they said to keep them clean of course, and feed them more often, the stool came back positive for a parasite, and they would call in the script all the way from Arizonia ? that that company will call for all the info to send it to me. Now I don’t know, could it be the amox & worm med that made them have the diarrhea ? or could it be I switched the formula ? or is it this parasite ? Should I be real worried about them dying ? They seem to be some what active, but more hungry. I wish I did this before so I would know how to handle all this stuff.
If anyone could sound in on this I would be so grateful for any and all opinions
    Sincerely ,
    Laura

    Hi Laura,

I am completely new to kitty ownership but I have had two very valuable pieces of advice from this site. The first is goats milk. You can get it refrigerated or in the baking aisle in a can. The can is concentrated so mix 1 to 1 with water. It is cheaper than formula and great for their tummies. My kitty went through diarrhea and constipation back and forth from her dewormer and this is the only thing that settled her tummy and got her back to normal. The second tip I got was Lysine. It’s a human grade amino vitamin that is good for their immune system and runny eye issues. I’m sure for an eye infection she needs the drops but the Lysine is a good support and helper and cleared my kitty’s eye issues up in a few days. She gets one capsule emptied on her food every day now and it’s done wonders. The more experienced kitty owners will hop on here soon for you but in the mean time, I can’t say enough for the goats milk! Antibiotics and parasites are hard on tummies but the goat milk will help.

Thank you Megan for responding quickly. I think I will try the goats milk as suggested. I chatted with the vet, she said the formula was fine that I was using already. But I think I will try the goats milk any way. she also said that the parasite & meds could be causing the potties. only one is looking sad and still has constant diarrhea, and is not eating as much as the others. other than that – the others seem to be playing a little. The place in Arizona is the pet med place they do business with and they trust them. But they still have not contacted me as of yet. She also said to keep them separate from my regular guys, as it can be transferred through the kitty box 🙁 . All the tushes look so sore -it just breaks my heart 🙁

My kitty had the same problem from the dewormer and parasites. Goats milk settled her tummy. Then for the sore bottom I put a tiny dab of Vaseline on her and it helped soothe her. Hope your kitties feel better soon!

Hi Laura, welcome to TDK!! Megan gave you wonderful advice–the same advice I would have given you. I would stop giving them the milk replacer and give them the goat’s milk in it’s place. I raised my last kitten on it entirely, it really does help settle tummies and it’s non constipating and doesn’t cause diarrhea. You have a lot going on with the kittens as to what the cause of the diarrhea could be. It could actually be any ONE of those things, but they have been given an antibiotic, as well as worm meds. I think in a few days the diarrhea should clear up, just keep up with the goat’s milk and the lysine really helps them too. It’s found in the over the counter drug area of the grocery or Walmart and is human grade…just crush the white pills up and sprinkle it on their wet food, or add some to their milk. The vaseline should help their little bottoms to heal in between them going. Hope all these things help! Hang in there, they should be fine in a few days!

okay I found it in our health food store. Not in our grocery store. now I mix 1 & 1 right ? Still only the one is still very runny, and when I checked his bottom – there was a small amount of blood there too – did that happen with yours ?

Thank you Kittyzee, as well. I just got the powdered goat milk, and will be changing from the other in the next feeding. Now I do have on hand the lysine stuff from the vets that she gave me not too long ago for my old kitty fellows. I wonder if that would help as well as what you and Megan use?

I have not used the powdered goat’s milk, just follow the directions on the can. (The canned milk is condensed, so you mix one can of milk and one can of water into another container, then refrigerate it.) It should be just as good as the canned or fresh. The lysine should be the same stuff, I’m only guessing here, but it can’t hurt. Lysine is pretty cheap as OTC drugs go.
The blood in the stool would not be caused by the milk, but from the cause of the diarrhea. Whether it’s because of the parasites or the antibiotic. Hopefully that will clear up once the parasites are gone and the antibiotic is out of his system.

Okay I started the goats milk last night, 1 tablespoon of powder & one tablespoon of water. So we will see how it goes today .

    Update :
I have had these little ones on the goats milk since last nights final feeding for the day. They really ate a whole lot. They slept through the night 🙂 . Upon waking for morning feeding – hmmm. It looked as if the stool was firmer at the first part, then after that curdled. Of course they all had to have a full tub bath, and dried. Then another started to have a normal movement, the turned in to a total puddle mess afterward. hmmm. I have not given them the amox yesterday or today. I don’t know what to think now – could the goat milk come out as the diarrhea as well ? I know it can not be good to keep switching formulas, and reading on this site – everyone says it is the best.I will give it another day to see how it goes I guess. This last feeding — they did not want much to drink – So I will wait about another hour and try some more. It seems as tough I always pick the most challenging issues with the animals, and not intentionally go figure LOL.

Hang in there, Laura. Keep feeding the goat’s milk. Just let it take the place of the supplement. It’s hard to know what is causing the upset with all the formula changes, worm meds and antibiotics. At least their stools are forming up some. Raising kittens is NOT easy or for people who don’t want to worry. It’s messy, sometimes expensive, but when the kittens begin to thrive under your care then you are totally under their spell.
