    Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on gloves to wear to protect my skin from cat scratches when I play with my cat. Sometimes we play a little rough and he scratches my arms and hands. Thank you

Hi Casey – short of asbestos gloves, regular cotton gloves would help, but not totally prevent; those razor sharp claws will still get thru. Your hands should never be a toy, but that’s easier said than done. Petting kitty often leads to play and he will want to play with your hands. You can have a toy ready to intercept – that has helped me. Also, try to trim his claws. If you’re not sure how to do this, just ask your vet. You have to be careful not to cut the vein – just trim the edge where it’s sharp.

    Good luck and happy playing!

Ditto on good ideas given by Joan for you Casey! The only time I wore heavier gloves was the first couple of times I attempted to trim Lucky’s/newly domesticated feral claws. (BTW it has gotten better) I play w/my cats w/ a feather wand for more activity vs hands/arms!

Joan and JK have good tips, please never use your hands as ‘toys’ for a cat/kitten. It might be fun while they are very little but its like allowing a child to bite you when as a toddler/young baby and then getting upset when they do it in kindergarten because they think its ok. Re-direct their attention with a feather toy, paper ball, their favorite toy … anything to change the direction of their focus to something safer for both of you.
