So I never thought that this would be a problem but my cats hate fish oil on their food. I had tried a few months back because I have a senior cat that was hobbling around. The refuse to eat their dry food that they love if the oil is on it. And at that time they refused to eat the wet food with it as well so I gave up and found some treats that had the omegas in it

Well at the beginning of December we noticed our kitten Alice, who was about 7 months old at the time, was limping and not putting weight on her back leg, wasn’t running around like a spaz all of a sudden and she had all of a sudden stopped climbing the Christmas tree. I took her to the vet a couple day after we first noticed bc it wasn’t getting better. We did a round of anti inflammatories and she was still limping so then we had to do X-rays and found out that she has a birth defect with her knee and she had just grown big enough that it started causing a problem. Vet said we had 2 choices take her to a specialist and do expensive surgery or give her fish oil. I told the vet about our try with the oil before and she told me to use a syringe. When I got home and saw the rx is said to give her a tablespoon 2x a day! That is a lot of oil for a 8-10 lb cat considering the box says no more than half a teaspoon a day. I called the vets office to verify the dosage but she wasn’t there and none of the other vets knew if it was a typo or on purpose. So I got a syringe and started giving it to her and she hates it. She has had no problem with pills but hats the oil. It takes forever to get just 1 dose in her. I gave up and started mixing it with her wet food and now she’ll eat it but not all of it. Once she walks away my senior cat starts eating it.
Any ideas on other ways to get 2 tablespoons of fish oil in my kitten. My hands and legs are all scratched up and she’s getting strong and figuring out how to escape easier and easier

    Hi Melissa,

You’ve discovered not all cats like fish. I understand you want to give the amount on the RX but forcing her to take 2 Tbsp. is a lot. If you start with the .5 tsp. then she will get her fish oil and you won’t stress so much. Or ask the vet if you can use powdered Cosequin or Glucosamine. These supplements are effective, can be sprinkled in her food and perhaps your little one will find them more palatable.

Good luck and let us know how you’re getting along.

I put a few drops in water and add it to my kits moist food to make gravy.
They lap it all up – good luck!
