    Great MS!
    Time for some February Nomz:

Food Fun / More Food Fun

    National Food Holidays: February

Including Valentine-Red Celebrations Like National Cherry Month & National Strawberry Day

Click here to return to the main page of this article.

We tend to think of Valentine’s Day as “owning” February, but this list says otherwise. Don’t let one day of red satin candy boxes limit your celebration, when there are month-long festivities like:

    •Berry Fresh Month
    •Canned Food Month

    •Celebration of Chocolate Month

    •Great American Pies Month
    •National Cherry Month
    •National Fiber Focus Month
    •National Fondue Month

    •National Grapefruit Month
    •National Heart Healthy Month
    •National Hot Breakfast Month
    •National Snack Food Month
    •Potato Lover’s Month
    •Sweet Potato Month

    For week-long celebrations, there are:

    •Shape Up With Pickles Time
    (First Week)
    •Great American Pizza Bake
    (Second Week)

    •Kraut and Frankfurter Week
    (Second Week)
    •National Pancake Week
    (Fourth Week)

And then, there are the daily festivities:
•International Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday (February or March)
    •Oatmeal Monday, second Monday
•February 1: National Baked Alaska Day
    •February 2: Heavenly Hash Day
•February 2: National Pisco Sour Day
•February 3: National Carrot Cake Day
    •February 4: Homemade Soup Day
•February 4: National Stuffed Mushroom Day

    • February 5: National Chocolate

*Is it patty or pattie? Cadbury calls its product York Peppermint Pattie, but a pattie refers to a meat product. According to the dictionary, “patty” is more correct for the candy.
•February 11: Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day

Happy Tu B’Shevat – The New Year for Trees!

Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar—celebrated this year on Wednesday, February 4, 2015—is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. The day is marked by eating fruit, particularly from the kinds that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remember that “man is a tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19), and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue. (Excerpted from Chabad.org)

Hey JK, thanks for the soup link. My brother is growing asparagus, which takes a few years till it produces. I think this is the 3rd year so he might get some this year, in which case I can make soup!

February 17: National Indian Pudding Day
    http://www.yankeemagazine.com/recipe/indian-pudding#_
Early colonists brought with them to America a fondness for British “hasty pudding,” a dish made by boiling wheat flour in water or milk until it thickened into porridge. Since wheat flour was scarce in the New World, settlers adapted by using native cornmeal, dubbed “Indian flour,” and flavoring the resulting mush to be either sweet (with maple syrup or molasses) or savory (with drippings or salted meat). In time, Indian pudding evolved into a dish that was resoundingly sweet, with lots of molasses and additional ingredients such as butter, cinnamon, ginger, eggs, and sometimes even raisins or nuts. Recipes for Indian pudding began appearing in cookery books in the late 1700s.
