I got a call tonight. I lost the apartment because the owner felt I am too unstable with my walking. Oh well…

Hi Cheri, I’m sorry the apartment didn’t work out. Something even better must be in store for you.

What does your walking stability have to do with your ability to rent an apartment?

she thinks that if I fall during the night, that I would call her because she is right next door, and that eventually I would see her as my night time aide, and that she doesn’t want to become that…

Gosh, Cheri, that sounds like she’s discriminating because of your disability. I don’t know about New York, but that’s flat out illegal in California. If she’s worried about the possibility that you might need help during the night, go get yourself a Life Alert or similar medical alarm system.

It would probably be a good idea to get one regardless of where you end up living. You are on Disability, aren’t you? I think you would be entitled to a free or reduced cost monitor, especially if your doctor prescribes one.

My mother had one that required her to push the button every morning. Since she lived alone, it gave us the comfort of knowing she would never end up with a medical emergency (like a stroke or a diabetic coma) and no way to summon help.

Here’s a website with reviews on a number of different companies.

Sorry that this apt did not work out Cheri. Here too, your being turned down would be considered as discrimination, but, and this is just IMHO so take it for what it’s worth, if you fight landlady and authorities got her to re-think decision, you would be starting off badly and might eventually cause problems. Generally I don’t like comparing situations, but the apt that I’m in now is a total fluke. I had already committed to a place in my condo bldg’s twin across street, even bought some deco items. And gotten out of lease for former apt, so had to get out. Landlady finked out on me from one day to the next and her story was that she suddenly wanted to sell not rent. (BTW apt stayed empty for 3 yrs!) Was not even going to look at my apt as wanted an extra room, Glad I did, ’cause the way it’s laid out, my apt is huge and much nicer that the one I lost. Ane rent is way less. All this rambling to say that I hope that there’s more than one ideal place and I hope that you find an apt soon.
