Word’s out that literary “lions” (and lionesses) will wait on us today in a bookcase-paneled café/library, complete with comfy armchairs and a stair ladder to reach those top shelves. There’s Puss’N Boots, Dick Whittington’s cat, The Pussycat (without The Owl), Pyewacket from “Bell, Book and Candle”, Lady Jane from “Bleak House”, the “Cat In the Hat”, the “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” and the eponymous Cat from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. But things are running amuck! Hermione Granger’s orangie Crookshanks is practicing potions, the Three Little Kittens are still miffed about losing their mittens, Lillian Jackson Brauns’ Koko and Yum Yum are off sleuthing and hey … the Cheshire Cat took my order then left the building mid-shift, with only his enigmatic smile as proof that he was ever there! Yo kitty, bring back that latte … now!!! Good morning all! Bring it back I said! *Chases madly after thin air*

This is from Covered in Cat Hair’s site on FB….

    Covered in Cat Hair
I’m not trying to sell you guys anything-I just came across this because tonight I realized if I got really sick that my own partner of over 20 years wouldn’t be able to make any choices about my care because he and I aren’t married. While I was looking up how to set up something for myself, I came across Pet Protection Agreements. I take this as a reminder that we should consider making a formal arrangement for the care of our cats if we can’t care for them. Food for thought…and I’m sure you can get this info elsewhere, too, so do the research and choose what’s right for you and your pets.

    Homesteading Self Sufficiency Survival
Foods That Prevent or Even Relieve Gout

Gout is a disease that is caused by uric acid build-up in the body. Uric acid is formed when the digestive system breaks down purines in our food. A diet high in vitamin C and rich in materials that allow excess uric acid to be flushed out in the urine is what will prevent and relieve gout. Despite recent studies supposedly showing that vitamin C somehow no longer aids in the fight against gout, they neglect to add that their findings do in fact show vitamin C to be effective, simply not as effective as some of the new medicines they have developed to combat gout or in most cases only it’s symptoms, unlike the natural alternatives. Vitamin C does in fact lower uric acid levels in the body as well as cleanse the blood and tissues of many if not most problem materials. However there are also other materials that play a part in relieving the body of gout or in preventing it.

Here are some foods that prevent gout:

Pineapple – contains an enzyme called bromelain that is an anti-inflammatory. Research has found that supplementing with bromelain or other anti-inflammatories may relieve the pain associated with gout.

Ginger – is a powerful anti-inflammatory that has been found repeatedly in clinical studies to reduce chronic inflammation. One study in mice found that a compound in ginger may help to reduce the inflammation associated with uric acid buildup.

Turmeric – has long been recognized as an anti-inflammatory by many cultures and has been proven in several studies. Some experts recommend a daily dose of turmeric to reduce the inflammation associated with gout.

Cherry juice – has been used to alleviate gout symptoms for decades. Small studies in Italy and the United States have reported success with cherry juice as a gout treatment, though scientists are not certain what mechanism is active in producing this result. Cherry juice does not appear to lower uric acid levels but research suggests that its anti-inflammatory properties are what effectively combat gout.

Hot peppers – are rich in vitamin C which has been shown to reduce uric acid levels.

Watercress – contains moderate levels of vitamins and minerals and is reputed to be very beneficial to the kidneys. It may help to rid the body of excess uric acid.

Lemons – studies have found that the higher a person’s vitamin C intake, the lower the incidence of gout. Try adding lemon to your water every day to alleviate gout symptoms.

A daily vitamin C supplement is highly recommended as vitamin C is one of the single most effective substances in removing uric acid levels from the blood and tissues. You can find a good high concentration supplement with rose-hips (aka “natural” vitamin C or “true” vitamin C) here: http://amzn.to/10TfpDB

By taking in these anti-inflammatory foods and taking a good vitamin C supplement daily, one should be able to keep their gout under control, prevent it altogether and in many cases even reverse it’s effects.

Not to get gloomy Deb, but I have specified in my Will that my cat (there will always be a cat) would be taken care of for his/her life by a local no-kill SPCA shelter, left them a relatively large donation and called them to confirm that this was acceptable. They were most agreeable and seems I’m not the only person to have made such arrangements.

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t be here.”
