Good morning….weather…fun topic! I guess that’s why we talk about it so much, huh? The melting kitty is too perfect.

I really enjoyed reading the different memories some of you have of jadeite dishes. AV, your little history was spot on. It was definitely not fancy….produced with junk glass, old soda bottles and stuff. It was produced very cheaply and quickly and you’ll often see little manufacturing flaws. It was often given away in bags of flour, oats, etc…like you said. Several companies produced jadeite but Anchor Hocking’s fire King line seems to be most plentiful now. They produced restaurant ware (also used by institutions like military, schools and churches)but several different looks, patterns of home use jadeite as well. Though the restaurant ware is my favorite (love the chunky look and feel and the great “diner clink” it makes when you stack it or bump it against another piece in the sink) I already have mixed it with other patterns from Fire King.

AV, I’m curious if what you and your grandfather collected had a ray-like pattern around the edge. If so, it’s what I’m using as salad plates. (Amazingly, the salad plate actually fits a serving of salad. The restaurant ware salad plates are great for many uses, but not salad.) The salad plates I’m using are called “Jane Ray” by collectors. Here’s a pic…might need to look closely to see the “rays” along the edge…

    Morning ECB,
The jadelite pattern in the pic is exactly the set we used in “wretched” country shack. Purrhaps I should have managed to get my paws on them and brought them to “Antiques Roadshow.” And yes the dishes had those “rays.” One of my not pleasant memories was food getting stuck between said rays and having to srsly scrub it off to get them completely clean! BTW love black/white placemat, one of my bedspreads has similar pattern. Also had a supposedly genuine “Tiffany” glass ceiling lamp, which I did not get my paws on either. I’ll leave the story there.

ECB, yes I remember those ‘rays’ also! I wonder if my grandmother had them, or if I ate from them in a restaurant many years ago. Although BOTH are a big possibility! As said grandmother has a son, my uncle, who owned a restaurant/cafeteria/bakery in the town square. It was the go-to place back in the day. On Mother’s Day in particular, patrons were lined up down the street and around the corner waiting to get in. That’s before there was a restaurant on every corner like today. Ah, the memories. Certain smells still remind me of the food in that place as it was outstanding! Also love your place setting and could you send some of that food through the wormhole please?
Oh my, I love the pics today!! LOVE the ‘happy now?’ and ‘air coldz’ cats….suits my personality to a ‘T’! 🙂

How fun that the Jane Ray is the pattern you had, KJ. Lol at the scrubbing. Your country shack reminds me of my MIL’s stories of her “lake house” as a kid. They built it themselves and it was VERY rustic. Not my idea of vacation fun, but to each his own, I guess. She has wonderful memories of it.

ETA…hi, KZ! You remember the rays too? Cool. I’d love to go back in time and visit your uncle’s restaurant.

AV, that’s gorgeous! They made Charm in jadeite but I’d never seen the forest green. (Of course, I’ve only recently started learning about it.) I had a little vision the other day of collecting one cup and saucer from the various patterns of jadeite and making a cool display. Charm is definitely on my list to pick up a cup and saucer one day….so distinctive!

I’m just using the Jane Ray pattern for salad plates because Restaurant Ware didn’t have a good size for that. The Restaurant Ware doesn’t have the rays. But the Restaurant Ware salad plates make perfect little dessert plates or bread and butter plates. I keep thinking to myself, “Maybe salad in a restaurant meant a little square of jello salad in those days. I just can’t see fitting lettuce salad on these.”

    Hi everybody,

Love the “talk to the paw.” It’s 25f/-3c but the sun is shining brightly. Miss Gaea and I sat out getting our Vitamin D.

I guess my family missed out on the dishes. My aunt had some like KJ mentioned but I don’t where they went when she remarried. I prefer all white so I wouldn’t use the dishes, anyway.

I was sick in the night and when I finally got to sleep, I woke up with a nasty headache. Let’s hope the day improves since it’s

AV-Thanks for the picture of Miss Abby with white kitty. She looks so content with her BFF!

It’s funny that you mention the size of the older dishes, ECB. Over the years, plate sizes are larger and nutritionists recommend using small dishes so we don’t overeat. Until I saw the dishes of yore, I never noticed the difference.

Greetings from Olijo Jopeq – funny Star Wars name!
Woke to snowy weather which has since stopped falling, got about 3″.
Love the kitty/weather kitties, I can identify with basement kitty’s disapproval of windy weather!
I remember those dishes but other than a candy dish I don’t remember having any. I was thinking of the dish sizes too. We used dinner plates for Christmas dinner, and the last time we used them before that was last Christmas! We use luncheon plates for dinner, to control portion size.
The café customers made feeding time a bit difficult, through no fault of their own. They were hunkered down till the snow stopped. Initially there were four, so I opened a smaller can of food and split it 4 ways. A little while later holdout Dewey showed up so I opened another can, and finally Mama Cat made an appearance. Funny thing about priorities and weather. Back in the Shaddo/Jiggs era, the priority was to shovel a path to the wood pile and a path to nowhere, because the cats didn’t like using a litterbox! Now it’s about clearing surfaces for the kitties to gather! And since I wasn’t about to kick Louie off the chair last night, I tossed the wet afghan in the dryer this morning and treated him to warm dry bedding.

Fun names – sad to say haven’t seen ANY Star-Wars movies…not my thing. But know it’s an awesome draw/series!
My sis used to collect Depression Glassware. Pretty colors & patterns.
I have a few pieces but not a set. I have way too much stuff anyways. I’m trying to pair down/down size some of the stuff that
just isn’t used as on going project!

Cool but sunny, enjoyed a quick walk little while ago.
OK, time to head back to desk for part 2’s fun…later…oops, pat pat – you’re the best Tux!

Hi JK – I inherited a lot of stuff that I need to pare down. I need to simplify yet keep what makes me happy.
Put one less Christmas box away this year, a good start!
Backed yo the weather – how do kids at the shore spend their snow day? Sledding on snow covered dunes at the beach. Sounds like a blast!

“May the Force be with you” from NILPE JOMON! Had to open a doc to figure this one out! LOL. Not a Star Wars fan either as first film was the beginning and ending of it for me sequel-wise.
I ditched or rather gave away 2 sets of dishes plus my crockpot and misc other items. Friend/Hazel most appreciative. Simplicity is my middle name sorta.
This day has gone sour from the get-go. First went to gym to relieve stress as per and usually very decent instructor got way off base when I politely asked him to provide RPM (revolutions per minute) on new bikes, he outright refused and became very nasty, 4-letter word involved. Now I’m most of time going through stuff and for next few it’s exacerbated. This got on my last nerve. I went to co-ordinator and lost it as in totally. Crying. She calmed me down somewhat and said she will deal with situation. Then had heart-to-heart with instructor’s life partner, she knows of my issues and will speak with him. Touchy, but felt that this was appropriate. I need to relax and best that I can come up with is still not going to make much of a dent in what has to be gotten through. And no, no one wants to know about my stuff, but it does not involve jail time. Hehehe, sense of humour more or less intact.
PG, sorry that you had c**p night and hope that headache disapears. Were your kitties solicitous and comforting? Hmmm … well not in Dorry’s nature, don’t know of other kittehs.
I’m outta here. GR8 Caturday all!

Oh, KJ. Sorry about the upset at the gym. I hate it when I just can’t stop myself from crying when I’m upset….but it happens to all of us.

To continue with your theme of keeping what makes you happy Joan… I summed it up to the lady I sold some jewelry to today, “I’m getting rid of some beautiful things I love but don’t use to make room for beautiful things I love and will use.” I sold my grandmother’s broach I’d been thinking about selling for years. I wear several pieces of jewelry that belonged to my grandmothers. But this broach, though breathtakingly gorgeous and valuable, just wasn’t something I’d wear. So into the jadeite fund the money goes. :). Hopefully my grandmother would be happy that the dishes get used and make us all happy three times per day. Even the boys admire the green glow of the dishes…lol. I’m raising little vintage dish enthusiasts.

Oh, and while inventorying my crystal to get ready to sell it, I came across a cute little casual glass sugar bowl and creamer. I’d been wanting something neutral to use with the jadeite since my other creamer goes with my blue and white. I have no idea where this little creamer and sugar bowl came from. A wedding present I guess….the boxes hadn’t been opened since soon after our wedding.

ETA….so glad to meet another person who doesn’t like Star Wars, KJ! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one. Saw the original in the theater as a young girl and always wish I could get that hour and a half back. 🙂

Sorry about the situation at the gym, KJ. May you have a restful and peaceful Sabbath.
Thanks for the share on getting rid of stuff so that you have room for stuff that makes you happy, ECB. I just went thru my linen closet and put back way less than I took out. How many sets of sheets and towels does one couple need, anyway? Even with trimming down, I’ve got plenty for us as well as guests. How cool that you came across the creamer and sugar bowl, kind of like getting a brand new gift all over again!
Have a fabulous weekend, JK! Wish I got the Hallmark Channel, will have to settle for the kitty halftime show on Animal Planet.
    New episode tonight, Grimmers. 🙂

Love this discussion and pics of the dinnerware. The forest green pieces are beautiful too AV! I saw some pieces in all those pics I wouldn’t mind having myself! When I saw those red plates interspersed amongst the green, I remembered seeing those somewhere many years ago too. Does anyone remember what that is called? Remember the red glasses with the clear bottom stems? That’s what I remember, I think my MIL had those in what seems to be another lifetime! Thought they were so elegant!
KJ, so sorry about the fiasco at the gym. Ugh, hate it when things go sour like that. We understand and I’m glad you feel you can share it here and not worry about it. Hope you are able to rest and have a peaceful Sabbath.
I did see that the Kitty Bowl was this weekend…may just have to DVR it.
Yes, came upstairs to get jammied up, put hair in ponytail, and get ready to watch Grimm!! 😆

I’m sure we can get plenty of videos of the Kitty Bowl and the Puppy Bowl. At least the dear wee beings won’t have serious brain injuries when they are still youngish. I enjoy watching sport, but sadly, money conquers all, eh?
