    Hi TM,

In case you don’t get to Café, here’s info that I posted there about my spin wkts.

Awesome that you found comfy spin shoes. Didn’t know the diff they made. ’til I got mine yrs ago. And cohort just got a pr last wk and is amazed!
I actually have a binder of previously done spin workouts from our old cycle area. The instructor used to write program on white board and I took pic and copied out. I don’t go to his classes ’cause I don’t like him and it’s quite obviously mutual. But I do his wkts on a spin bike that has super resistance adjustments but no readouts/console, I go by perceived rate of exertion and get fab wkt. In class I only use gear/RPM (revs per min) as don’t bother with watts or any other numbers which can’t be all that accurate anyway and IMHO takes away from the fun as I’m not a sci proj. I only do DIY about ea 2 wks as I do like being in gp and social interaction. And my goal is to feel high like kite after. Best DIY thing is my wkt = my music, some of which would not be purrmitted in a class as it’s “gangsta.” I don’t know of any apps as I don’t even have iPod, it’s my CD discman/earbuds/printed wkt. And it all works!
But here’s some sites with free spin wkts.

Thanks! I have found a couple of apps but don’t like them. I use a heartrate monitor because apparently I am not good at RPE. I do like the group atmosphere at class but also prefer my own music, and in general can only make the class time on Sundays. I have noticed a difference with the shoes, I still have to work to find that “smooth, even circles” motion but getting better.

Yeah TM, the shoes do take a little time to get used to. like all new shoes, I suppose. My cleats are the recessed kind, as the ones with cleats that stick out make it dangerous to walk to and from class and most peeps with the non-recessed bring a pair of sneaks and change before/after. Plus some very inconsiderate swimmers drip water all over locker room, turning place into virtual skating rink. 😡
Synchronistically one participant asked instructor if dedicated spin shoes were a good plan, she spins approx. 3x/wk. I answered that spin shoes take pressure off toes and esp when standing, keep body in perfect position on pedals. One caution, not ideal for outdoors, according to some bikers if bike falls foot can lock in pedal and injuries result. But I never bike outdoors and never will so not an issue. Guess that I go nowhere fast! Hehehe!
Several peeps in class use heartrate monitors, seems to be a good way of measuring intensity. Anyway I hope that you find some wkts that you like. To me, having fun working out is the most important thing. 🙂

Our stretching area is outside the spin room and I was stretching today I overheard the instructor of the class telling a regular that she expected him to get shoes soon. I know he has been doing that class for years so he really should, mine weren’t even that expensive. (As athletic equipment goes) I don’t wear them outside the spin area so they should last a long time, I think walking on a hard surface would damage the clips even though they are slightly recessed.

I tell people that all the time too – you have to find something that you enjoy – the most effective workout is the one that you will do.

We would love to have a designated stretching area, for now I just take a mat into spin room and lay it out on a bench. There is adequate space and I will mention this issue (again) among others when a new Associate Dir. is in place. Current one just resigned, although word is that it might not have been his choice, he totally lacked people skills, didn’t seem to follow up on issues and although facility is huge and within non-profit community centre, where peeps do pay and very well, customer service is key.
Spin shoes do last way longer than say running shoes. Except for being in shopping bag on way home from bike store, mine have never been outdoors, and very nice salesman told me that if they ever get rusty for some reason, just bring them in and he’ll apply the “right” lube. I also have an allen key in case they ever need tightening. They live in my locker at the gym!
