My cat only received her FVRCP vaccine and Rabies shot when she was a kitten. She’s a year old now and I’ve been taking her outside so I thought there might be extra shots she needs so I took her to the vet. He only gave me these Revolution flea drops and when I asked about the FLV, he was recommending not to get it because of some sarcoma side effect – he said he’s seen cats that needed to get their leg amputated as a result and if we wanted to take that risk we can, but she most likely will be okay without the vaccination.

What are your opinions on the FLV? I mostly keep my cat indoors…when she goes out, she just sits on the front porch sometimes with a leash on. I always watch her. She rarely comes into contact with other cats and she never wanders away. Will she be okay without the shot? She goes outside maybe 1-2 hours a week max & only in the summer.

How about getting a titer test, see if her immunity is still fine, which I bet it is? A lot of people are doing that instead of vaccinating, because there are to many risks and side affects with vaccinating a cat or dog all the time.

http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines has tons of info about vaccines (types, side effects, general suggestions, and other research) if you want to check it out.

Forgot to include this link: http://consciouscat.net/2012/04/23/lets-talk-titers-avoid-over-vaccinating-your-cat/ which explains what titer testing is and how it works.

If you do it, make sure to get them microchipped! Because they will test positive for FELV after vaccinated. Should they end up in a kill shelter and they test them for FELV and they turn up postive, that’s unfortunately a likely death sentence.

If she isn’t spending any unsupervised time outdoors I wouldn’t vaccinate with that vaccine.

    Agree w/ECB’s comment.
